I found that the downhill assist feature works just as well going up large hill’s as well even in icy situations it worked fantastic

Thanks, great video, very informative. I just bought a new 2018 Unlimited Sport JL and wasn’t sure how to operate the downhill assist. Now I do. Also, I’ve bought a couple upgrades from your site using the app on my android. Keep up the great work!
On my Rubicon JL I off road it a lot, don’t know if it’s just engine braking, but when I go down a very steep grade, I never have to push the hill descent button or put my foot on the brake, it crawls down the hill extremely slowly with no button pushed. No need to push button yet and been down some serious hills
I wonder if it is due to the low gear rock crawl ratio in the Rubicon? That feature is not in the Sport or Sahara.
Must be, I can go down extreme steep hill and it crawls about 1mph with foot off the brake completely. Never touch the hill descent button
It is most likely the very high gear ratio of the Rubicon engine braking for you. Especially if you put it in the manual shifting mode and keep it in 1 or 2
To be honest, I actually have a ton of respect for the JL Sahara. If I owned a Sahara, I would take it off road all the time!

As someone with no off road experience I would use this feature more than most but I would also want to learn how to drive without it. Nice to know it works when you want to use it.
The point I believe is to help keep your brakes from overheating and causing you tumble down a hill to a very unpleasant end.
The JL basically crawls on it's own. I can literally let go of the wheel and it steers itself over rocks. I just let it do it's thing figuring I'm putting less wear and tear on it lol. People tell me I make things look easy and it's the Jeep. I honestly haven't tried this mode yet but heading to Moab and I was going to try it on some of those steep descents. I think the JL gearing makes this almost unneccesary though. Good video!

Wow that's almost like what my 12 year old lr3 has except mine only works in high range and low range and comes on when the rock crawl mode is selected

Great video as usual. You guys have a 2.0L and there is a lot of debate what would happen if you run regular 87 gas on it. I think it would make a great test drive video too.
Nothing happens. The manual explicitly states that 87 is just fine. 91 or higher for optimal performance.
manual states tuned for 87 and up with 91 and 93 for best performance and mpg (which i never see a difference in mpg) but notice less get up power
He said that the Downhill assist is different in the JL than in the JK. How does it work in the JK?
Is the hill assist feature available on the manual JL ?

Couple of questions, does it actually use the brakes or does it use the engine to keep you at that speed that you set it at, and is it available in a standard?
0.6 mph increments seems like a strange number to pick. I wonder if it is really 1 kmh increments... (0.621371 mph = 1kmh)
This is why I like a manual transmission.
There are pro's and con's for both.

The drivers seat has a height adjustment. Works great for all sizes..
Did you shift into 4L while stopped? I thought you are supposed to shift into 4L while rolling 2-3 MPH. Seems like 2 MPH is best for shifting into 4L. Do you experience any grinding?
It works best and is recommended that you shift into low range at a stop with the Trans in neutral
Won’t this glaze your brakes on a long steeped hill?
In my opinion is working better with manual transmission.
When will all these buttons be available on an IPhone app ?
I don't want to actually have to drive my new jeep, just sit in it and look at my phone as it drives along...
Or better yet, set at home, in my mom's basement and post videos of my Jeep offroading...

I have a 1979 CJ 5, I bought new when I was 16 yo...
No power steering, no power brakes, lockers f/r.
Swapped in dana 44's, 5:13 gears, came stock w/ 4 speed /w granny first gear...
You youngin's n yur Detroit soft lockers...

Easy way to "fix" the crappy downhill descent, ABS and traction control. Simply plug the J6 fuse when it is not needed or that functionality fails and your Jeep "bricks" and can not move in the middle of nowhere or far into the Rubicon trail. Crappy technology, easy fix :)

Little by little they take the skill out of driving. These new Jeeps looking more like trendy SUV/cars with all the contours on the doors and panels, and big fender lights. I wish they kept the boxy classic look.
People these days have it so easy. Back when people REALLY traveled off-road we had to put shoes on our horses, and feed them, and let them rest. Now all people do is put gasoline in their car and drive it all day and night. They even have heaters and air conditioners built right in. It's not like it used to be when people REALLY traveled off-road.
@@FJDH11 The slanted windshield really takes away from the look. I know they did it to try to get better mpg. Wish it didn't have the sculpts and scoops, now they have start button, took out roll bar padding.. It just detoured me from getting one over summer. Hunted down an older one. Plenty out there.
@@johnc8327 More truth to that then you realize. Order our pizzas without getting off the sofa..one day it will be "Alexa, drive over that obstacle in my Jeep" lol
@@FJDH11 Agreed the JK, TJ...The JL is too new of course most haven't seen it. I just like the classic styling of the old ones, more boxy, with roll pads..TJs and JKs can look very similar. All subjective when it comes to cosmetics.
