Taiwanese people are really famous here in the Philippines back then 'coz of Meteor Garden (year 2002) but when Sandara Park became a household name, Hallyu wave, kdramas and kpop prosper in our country up to this day. Personally, she is the reason why I knew kpop. 😊

Everybody was crazy about Barbie Hsu. I remember during Kris Aquino interview with Barbie Hsu, she said "I am thankful to you because of you, Filipinos with chinky eyes are now considered beautiful in the Philippines".
I actually had no idea about Korea before. I only knew China, Japan, and Taiwan until Abscbn Tagalized Lovers in Paris, I was hooked, and then I watched Jewel in the Palace and Jumong. I have never watched Endless Love, and Full House until now even The Descendants of the Sun. My turning point to becoming a Kdrama fan was Crash Landing On You.

I really think Sandara is the reason why kpop suddenly became very famous in the Philippines. She suddenly disappeared in Philippine showbiz and then we heard about her being part of this Korean girl group (2ne1) then we got curious about kpop culture and the rest is history 😊

That’s exactly how I became a fan of 2ne1, I was a Sandara Park fan during my elementary school years. She disappeared for a bit and I found out in 2009 she was debuting as 2ne1. It was also how I got into Kpop. 😊 She is that influential in spreading Hallyu in the Philippines.
I could still remember crying when she won. I was still in highschool back then and I used up my load to vote for her. I love her and so proud of all that she has achieved. She is an inspiration to the Filipino people.

We actually have quite a few of korean celebrities, host singers and news personel here. We have Sam Oh, Dasuri Choi, Ryan Bang, Grace Lee, Shine Kuk, Sandra Jung, Jinho Bae.. Sam Oh being one of the first to have landed her own tv show called Rated Oh!(2005) and she's a seasoned newspaper columnist in manila times. She been working here for the longest time.

@@dizznut1 Not really, i think sandara and sam oh started at the same year (2004) it's just that Sandara was more popular because everyone watches SCQ but Sam Oh was a tv host at that time. And i also remember that there was an another korean who was a like in morning news or talkshow before them, i just couldn't remember the name coz it was too long ago but i have a feight memory to that i was watching that korean girl in morning talk show while preparing to go for my HS graduation it was yr 2000.
No one can deny the fact that Kpop blew up in the Philippines because of Sandara Park! She is obviously very grateful to the Filipino fans and her adoptive country. I think it also helps that she speaks the language and people can relate to her because of her humble beginnings. Her fame didn't go up her head. She stayed humble and grateful. Another reason why I'm such a big fan of her since I was 10. It was exhilarating to see another foreigner on tv who also struggled with living in the Philippines as a child.

As you can see in the video, Sandara was part of top 5 and on the verge of being eliminated before the grand finals. But she was saved by the textvotes of the Filipino fans who fell in love with her charm. It was the first time in Philippine history (even in game shows or reality shows) that textvotes reaches a million and so Sandara did that.(*Note: at that time, there is still no online voting or unlimited texts, so you can only vote with 1 sim per contestant. It also has to be noted that one of the reasons why she also got popular was east asian dramas were starting to get popular in the philippines particularly Meteor Garden. If you looked for her love team, her "partner" back then did resemble the shy, sensitive type of guy which was popular in east asian dramas back then. Then there will be a surge of korean nationals in the country as the philippines became an affordable option to those who wanted who wanted to study abroad and also learn english. It was the perfect moment for Sandara then. Years later she wanted to have a more mature image and even posed for a men's magazine (fhm i think or was it maxim) then she came back to her country and let's just say the rest is history.
