I had the pleasure of seeing Adrian present this workshop in Mexico City in 2014. I have used this approach ever since with my students, and I have also taught teachers to use this approach. Teaching pronunciation as a physical activity is a game changer, and not only helps with speaking skills, it helps with listening comprehension skills. When you know how to correctly pronounce sounds and words, it helps you recognize and understand when you hear them.
It's always fulfilling to see a professional who loves and knows what he is doing. Thanks Adrian for the introduction to pronunciation. That's one of the toughest points to teach to Students from different language backgrounds.
I wish I came across your video earlier. Now I wish all English teachers could watch it... Thank you very much!!! It is the best phonetic lesson I have ever had in my life.
This is the best class I have ever seen so far, thank you very much, I used to love phonetics and phonology, now, I don't know what else can I expect, thank you.
I watched him do this workshop at the British Council, Tokyo in the mid 1990s, and even before that had seen him on an old International House teacher training video. Classic stuff - love it. Wish I could teach this well! Thanks Macmillan for making this available on TH-cam.
Thank you so much for this class Teacher Adrian. I waited over 28 years to learn how my speech is formed in English and you made this experience very enjoyable and informative at the same time. Many-many thanks!
It was a real pleasure for me to listen to this phonology lesson and surprisingly not boring! Teaching the others will be much easier now after this excellent lesson. Thank you
I work with little children and teenagers and I use most of these principles, but there are people that look at me like I'm crazy coo coo...Now I can laugh at them and be sure that my teaching way is just fine!!! how great is to know that even by instinct you are right!... this video has made my day :)
My nemesis! But Mr. Underhill is an utter genius and I can see myself referring to this brilliantly useful video many more times. Thank you for putting it up.
Oh dear! The usual expert speaks. Adrian is doing wonders at helping teachers and students get to grips with what is, for most people, a very difficult and challenging subject matter. Perhaps you should consider the context of what he's doing, which is not academic linguistics, but the teaching of practical skills to teachers and students. Perhaps you sir are a pedant and believe in the prescriptive teaching of language skills?
This method is FANTASTIC! I'n fact I could see the sounds and be completly aware of how do I have to use my muscles (lips, tongue, lips..). I'm preparing my on lesson based on this lecturer and the book of Adrian Underhill (Sound Foundations), things like that should be spread over the sea!
Thanks a million for uploading and sharing. A 10 for Macmillian and its amazing staff. I'm an English teacher myself and this valuable material is sure a huge help to us all.
AWESOME!!! WONDERFUL !!!! A person who really knows about phonetics !!!! We NEED to SEE with our eyes how the sounds are produced in our mouths....My love to you my teacher! My regards from Venezuela!
hello sir greeting from KUBLE AFGANISTAN it was wonderful because most of teachers in our country do not pronounce correctly it helped me as an ENGLISH student to be the best thank uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

This was such a great class! I felt like i was right there with all the others; and my favourite part was how he was so interactive and fun with these topics that can seem to be difficult to get a hang of! Learned a lot and enjoyed myself at the same time! he's really good at what he does! Respect and admiration
thanks a lot mister adrian it's very helpful and usefull i appreciate your efforts to help people improving their skills in fact nobody can deny the importance of phonetics in the language because it'helps us to pronnonce correctly
i'm working on a presentation for tomorrow and this video helped me a lot... it would be my first time to discuss something about pronunciation however until now, i still can figure out how to start........ humaygooodnessssss
I used to think that I'm crazy by means of my students impressions...but with this video, I'm sure that doing it right... THANKS for sharing this video. I'ts helpful and I kinda like your students' attitude unlike mine, they were laughing every time I demonstrate the sound of IPA, although they enjoyed it. :))
For anyone wondering how this might be used in a classroom, each student and class of students will have different individual issues with speaking (some more than others), and may arrive in your classroom with zero English, therefore potentially requiring a full review of the English sounds as demonstrated in this workshop, or an existing grasp of English pronunciation but having trouble with the 'p'/'b' sounds (for example), in which case Adrian's techniques can be taken and adapted to focus where you need to. However, you will of course subsequently want to map these sounds on to actual vocabulary ('f' -> 'fox' etc.) so that students can cement their learning with real language.
