I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s five years ago. I also majored in cultural anthropology in college. In the last 3 years, I’ve done 11 fasts of five to ten days. It’s been 2 1/2 years since I stopped taking any medicine, whatsoever. The doctors typically will ask me what the secret to my “success”, is. When I say I attribute it more to fasting, than anything else, they never show any interest in pursuing it. ..until the last one, who suggested doing a smell test before and after the fast, as a way to provide evidence of disease reversal. I should know the answer in late September.

This whole subject of autophagy, fasting, and keto is so enlightening and encouraging. But, one thing I rarely hear mentioned is that besides it creating healing in a physical sense fasting helps mental health as well. It resets my mood, lifts me out of any depression or funk I’ve been in. I feel mentally and physically exhilarated while fasting. I believe that overeating (restaurant buffets, pigging out, etc..) and SAD (standard American diet) both affect the mental state and not in a good way.
The mental health part which I think I figured out depends on the autophagys ability to recycle nutrients giving us a boost of nutrients which improves mood. I feel the same way when I am taking all nutrients.
Sathish Neelakandan Yes, I’m not positive of the exact science behind the improvement of mood and mental health. One theory is that the foods we eat are not the best. Unless you have you’re own source of food - meats and home grown produce like on a farm for example - you never really know what’s in it. Then with so many eating the SAD and processed foods we know that’s the bottom of the barrel choice. Also, and probably just as if not more important is when we fast it gives the organs a huge break to be able to fix other issues in the body. Maybe even the brain - which is an organ, too. Hopefully, Dr. Berg can eventually touch on this subject and see what documented studies have been done that cover the mental health side of this.
193001 kiplssd I completely agree - and just like physical ailments are treated with harmful drugs that usually make things worse - exactly the same goes for mental disorders which are usually treated only with psychiatric drugs which again cause harmful side effects and put a band aid on a problem.
Mental health is tied into your physical health. Western teaching has really butchered the human being in their specialization and their obsession of separating the mind and body as 2 different entities. The body works as a whole.
I learned by mistake but in prison in solitary confinement for 16 grams of pot , I didn't eat for 2-5 days and i could feel my organs and body changing there is notifiable differences or nuances thru the hours and days. I love it REAL works!!! Autophagy is the soul ution ;) thanks for sharing!

The English would split the word into 2 parts. Which is correct, its like you would say auto-matic rather than autom-atic. Americans pronounce it autophagy.
Siim Land is spot on about protein. One gram per pound of body weight would not be bad if you train adequately . Most important for muscle, and tissues.
Many experts agree that the autophagy process initiates in humans after 18-20 hours of fasting, with maximal benefits occurring once the 48-72 hour mark has been reached👍
@Jeremy Edwards you have a good question. Dry fasts are suppose to only be for a maximum of 18 hrs m/l and how/what you break the fast with is ever bit as important.

I am not that sure how much protein you are recommending. Is it .8 grams per pound of body weight for a meal? Or all day? I am doing OMAD about 4 days per week and 2MAD 3. Occassionally I do a full day fast. But on days I am eating 2 meals do I want to eat half that protein and days I only eat one meal I eat it all? Very interesting interview. Thanks!
There seems to be a debate around the idea that eating too much proteins would be spiking glucose and be equivalent to eating carbs (Siim mentions it at 32min or so). This narrative seems to be supported by evidence only when the glucagon/insulin ratio is low. If this ratio is high an the subject is fat adapted it appears that only the necessary amount of glucose for the body to function is obtained from gluconeogenesis of protein contents.
Im a lada diabetic. I've done omad for years keto and carnivore. It stopped working. I did a 7 day water fast as my endo said it would help. I did stop my insulin as I only took it sparingly. Thing is my blood sugars were high all the time so I didn't lose weight or I put 1 lbs on. I am doing another 7 day water fast with a little bit of insulin. Now my blood sugars are down but I've put 4 lbs of weight on in 4 days... it's either have high blood sugars or put weight on. I have no in-between. What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks alot doctor Berg. Would you please talk about the nutrition of the diabetes of type (one) and how can they reduce their weights although depending on external ansulin
I'm type 1. I use all the advice given to type 2 diabetics and it works fine. In fact, it makes managing insulin dose very easy because your sugars will never climb very high on a keto diet, and you become more insulin sensitive so you can bring your sugar levels down quickly if you test high occasionally. The main reason people don't mention type 1 diabetes management on these keto/metabolic channels and websites is for legal protection. They don't want somebody who is unskilled at adjusting their own insulin dose to make a mistake and have a hypoglycaemic event. This could get them in legal trouble, so they typically say, "talk to your doctor, if you have type 1 diabetes", or even worse, "don't do this if you are type 1 diabetic." I think this is a shame because type 1 diabetics often have very serious health problems which could be helped enormously by adopting these changes. All that is needed is for the patient to become a champion of their own health. I have never depended on doctors to set my insulin dose, so it wasn't frightening for me to make big changes. I simply tested A LOT - and made frequent adjustments with small amounts of insulin until I knew how my body was responding to the changes in my diet and metabolism. I think it's worth any perceived risk to get into this way of living, and build in the principles that Dr Berg talks about. It is life-saving. I've lost 35 kg/80lbs this year, and reduced my insulin usage by 80%. I think I have added at least 10 years to my life already. I'm telling you this because I don't believe Dr Berg or anyone else will give any advice specific to type 1 diabetics. But don't let it stop you from trying any of the things he discusses. Best of luck with your health journey!
@@andoletube thank you very much for sharing me your experience with keto nutrition. I have another question if you don't mind, for how long are you applying the keto diet.
@@fadwafadwa9463 I started keto at the beginning of the year. I had a couple of times when I ate carbs - I regretted it! I feel much better on keto than carbs. @@andoletube thanks you answered the questions i didnot even ask, your blood sugar test and your biological functions. I wish you a happy, healthy, great life. actually i did not try it yet, but your experience encouraged me alot to start the keto diet.
@@fadwafadwa9463 Great! I wish you much luck with keto. It can be hard for the first week or two while you adjust and become fat adapted. I got that part over quickly by starting with a 5-day fast because I wanted to get into ketosis as soon as possible. I understand that not everyone can or should start that way though. I was impatient to see some changes. The first two days were tough because I was craving carbs, but after that, I was in constant ketosis. As a diabetic though, you should test a lot while you learn about how your body is reacting and what your insulin requirements are. I was testing up to 8 times a day just to be careful and to learn what was happening. Even having your sugars slightly high is ok while you work out how much insulin you actually need when you are eating mainly fat and protein. Best of luck. Feel free to ask any questions along the way.
Dr. Berg, can you explain me how the body can keep the proteins of the muscles in a exercise while fasting? Because cortisol increase in a exercise, and he cause muscle catabolism, and GH is a sparing protein, but how the GH acts in this case? He blocks the cortisol action in the muscles?
D Hoosier - I was using Dr. Bergs MCT oil, but it is out of supply right now. I am now using Natures Way organic MCT oil, and I like it. Start out with just a teaspoon, then build up to a tablespoon or two each day, to avoid potential diarrhea. Good luck!!

Dr. Berg, can you explain me how the body can keep the proteins of the muscles in a exercise while fasting? Because cortisol increase in a exercise, and he cause muscle catabolism, and GH is a sparing protein, but how the GH acts in this case? He blocks the cortisol action in the muscles?
QUESTION: I'm looking for an "affordable" MCT oil, type 1 IDD, morbidly obese, DDD, & SLE. I do NOT want diarrhea.
Thoughts, please? 💗
Coconut oil?

D Hoosier - I was using Dr. Bergs MCT oil, but it is out of supply right now. I am now using Natures Way organic MCT oil, and I like it. Start out with just a teaspoon, then build up to a tablespoon or two each day, to avoid potential diarrhea. Good luck!!
