Where I live, we count snow by the foot and not the inches. That would definitely be considered a "toy" here!! 😁
But it's definitely handy to have one of these for the light dustings we get between storms. And I've considered putting one of these up on my porch roof which has a low pitch and I have to remove the snow regularly to help prevent ice dams.

    • @Jerseybytes2
      @Jerseybytes2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Northwest Jersey doesn't have that much snow most of the times either. I do remember a couple of snow storms when things got interesting. I didn't have a snowblower for the longest time, so I used to a snow shovel. A couple of times I got lucky and a kind gentleman ended up giving me a hand by clearing my driveway with his snowplow. He never charged me any money, and obviously I always thanked him. One day I was out and when I came back my now ex told me how the gentleman had cleared the driveway and then charged him $20. I figured the gentleman must have thought, "I always see her shoveling the snow, but never him. is he really not helping at all". which he wasn't. I ended up dumping the ex, and my kids grew up so they began helping me shoveling. I then got re-married and with the new husband we also got a snowblower a couple of years later, tho up to then he had been shoveling the snow with me and my kids :D

I'm from Iowa but was stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina when I was in the Marines. I noticed some things that most people don't realize that makes areas like that much worse in inclement weather.
The roads didn't have much if any crest to them, and there are no storm sewers to take water away. Also, they don't salt the roads, they don't have plows, and people don't seem to pay attention to their type of tires or amount of tread.
It's a recipe for disaster if it snows.

I always clean to the left of driveway looking down towards the road for about 15 feet. That way snow plow isn't putting much of anything back in my driveway. Just a suggestion realizing that it may be against policy or insurance regulations. That little blower does a really nice job.

I have both a single stage "paddlewheeler" that was given to me and two stage thrower. Use depends on depth and moisture of snow. Single stage is lighter and easier to use and great for my back deck which is huge. My conversation with "the neighbour" would have been much shorter even though I am likely the same age. My first words would be to shut off your bloody engine if you want to talk or have something meaningful to say. Good on you for being respectful and polite to an older guy that just wanted to gab.

A Toro PowerClear is all you need for most home use. It can even handle 10+" of snow. Essentially, if you don't have very long driveway, or if you don't get a huge amount of snow, a multi-stage snow blower is just a waste of money. Just imagine how much longer it would take to clear that few inches of snow with a 6-speed Briggs and Stratton! You'd be shoveling a lot more where the snow blower can't even maneuver.

I had a Power Toro Curve with the 2 stroke Suzuki engine, it was my Uncle's and it served me well until it started falling apart after 25-30 years. Good units, I have since had a Jonsered (Husqvarna) but it turned out to not be economical to run (same style of paddles as Toro's) but were $140 Canadian per pair and needed replacing way too often. Now I have a Cub 3x 28" heavy duty snow blower with a 420cc OHV engine, a vintage Toro 21" two stage with a Honda GX160 engine as a back up and two Honda HS35 single stage machines. Your explanation that using a single stage machine can be the fastest option is spot on for 6" (20 cm) or less snow.

I have a 721rc AND a 821qze. The 252cc in the 821 is a beast in a foot or less of snow and it's much more maneuverable than a 2 stage machine in those conditions.

Having a couple show bowers myself, and seeing the markings your snow blower leaves. You truly got the better of the set ups on the market. They have rubber and metal augers on the market. The metal sits 1/8-1/4" off the ground. While the rubber makes contact with the ground. Contact=better removal=better job for the customers. While the metal will leave a thin layer behind to melt in the sun over the next couple hours.
Plus, if you pull my stunt in 3+ feet of snow, and try to remove a curb with the auger. The rubber is cheaper than the metal ones to replace....

I've owned a few over the years. Single stage has their place / use during light snows. With the plows around here pushing 2 ft of the wet / icy crap at the driveway chute. I've found the 2 stage or even 3 stage is the best after about 3 inches. Maybe the rest of the walk / driveway also but those plows love to bury the ends. Plus never fails they come 'after' I get down. Or come back later just to make me come out to clean it again. That's life.

I once used a small electric snow thrower to clear 3' drifts. I picked it up and slowly lowered down. It worked surprisingly well.

@@barbrn There really is meaning to the Christmas song 'Silent Night'. Every time it snows I go out at night and watch the snow falling and it's so silent and peaceful outside at night. There's no activity going on. Everybody's in the warmth of their homes. It reminds me of the song.

I always find it funny to see the size equipment people think they need. I grew up in Watertown, NY in the 60s, when a 2-1/2 hp blower was a luxury. We had a neighbor with a 4hp Ariens that had no problem keeping up. I live northwest of Rochester, NY now, close to Lake Ontario and have been using a 5hp, 24" Ariens for nearly 40 years. My driveway and sidewalk are just as clean as those done with blowers with 3X the horsepower. The slushy stuff is still a challenge for pretty much everybody.

You have more patience than myself. I'll be polite for a few moments of small talk, but that's it if I'm working. That's the guy infront of you in the hardware store, at the table next to you at a restaurant, etc. talking to the workers forever while you are are waiting for service. Sometimes I feel sorry for them because it's they only way they can have a conversation because they're so boring, other times they irritate the heck out of you because life's too short. Sometimes you just gotta say "Is this going to be a long story?". 👍

I bet the neighbor would also despise of battery powered equipment, judging by his comments (nice little toy, and I have a big truck that can go up a driveway with 4 inches of snow). Cool story, I can go up my steep driveway with ice, layered with 8 inches of snow on top with a Prius because I have snow tires. He's probably against snow tires as well 🤣

Love taking my 2 cycle single stage plastic Toro snow blower out while everyone else has their big expensive 2 stage metal blowers. I usually do 2-3 homes while the big blowers are still on house 1. They always look like WTF is wrong here. No ramps, simple lifting. I have never had a bigger snowblower outperform my plastic Toro which is crazy to me
