Hey Garrett thanks again for your replies. I was able to figure this out by treating my disc stock as a square. I made a 18 inch square on my spoil board and placed my circle stock inside of it similar to how it is set up in vectric. set my X/Y at the lower right hand corner of the square just like in the software. It worked like a charm. The only reason I was able to get that far was from watching you. The success of this project helped me to get over the hump of fear of failure since my very first project stopped 3/4 of the way through and I just kind of gave up. Wish I could send you a picture just for your opinion.
When I bought my CNC Router, my plan was to do my drawing and designing in Mastercam and use a suitable post processor. My machine came with V Carve Pro. The machine manufacturer recommended a post processor in the V Carve. Looking in the Mastercam post processor list, I didn't see that post processor. I thought I would try a Generic Fanuc which often works with many machines. When it doesn't though, and you go right to cutting, you can get some not so good results. Dry run it first and see what happens. Still, cutting air without setting off alarms or stopping the machine is no assurance you are using a compatible post processor. Attempting to cut a piece will reveal the incompatibilities and leave you with scrap or possibly a damaged machine. So I would import my Mastercam model into Vectric in a compatible cad format and generate my toolpaths in Vectric. That seemed to work OK. Then I began to use Vectric more and more for design, as I became more and more familiar with it. Now I tend to use both software depending on what I'm doing. Still, using the correct post processor is vital. Using the wrong one can drive your machine to do some things you weren't expecting, like getting a different piece then your graphic check is showing. Then you are trying to figure out why you got a piece that looks so different. Something is definitely very wrong. Yes it is, and it may be you are using the wrong post processor for your machine. How do I know that? Um, well, let's just say I know stuff.
Garret, thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Did you ever made a video on how to machine a classical guitar fretboard? If you didn't Would you make a video on that? I don't know how complicated it would be. Thank you.
I have a trend smart plus. It has goya controller and Bach software. I want to run a different software. The dealer told me I need the extensions. You spoke about extensions and post processors in this video. Can you explain the difference. Many thanks.
Simon, a post processor writes gcode in a specific way so that the cnc controller software can interpret it correctly. An extension in your case might mean an additional bit of software built into your controller that you need to purchase before you can use a different software.

4:07 please tell shat should I select for Arduino grbl base cnc machine? The post process list is so long even there is lots g code too like gcode mm, atc, arcs so... Unfortunately I have version 10
omsingharjit, For an Arduino GRBL-based CNC machine, you can select the appropriate post processor that matches your machine's capabilities. I would suggest grbl (inch) or grbl(mm). That is your best bet brother!
So, I recently picked up a small cnc to learn on, but can't find a post processor listing for it. The test projects that came with it use an .nc format but the specific manufacturer doesn't display the specific machine in the drop-down list of of the menu in VCarve Desktop trial. I have a message out to them asking for the specific post processor info, so hopefully that arrives sometime soon!
Gary, I just saw your previous comment brother. You're doing the right thing reaching out to your manufacturer. I would say to wait for their response and go off of their recommendations for now my friend.
@@IDCWoodcraft I got the reply today regarding the post processor info, and essentially I need to manually create the machine config in VCarve to include my machine. I went ahead and purchased VCarve desktop and have been trying different machine configurations to match my machine - SainSmart genmitsu 4040 pro. So far I've carved my name on a piece of mdf using a GCode file as a post processor in the machine configuration, and that turned out OK. The candle software doesn't render the tool path very well, but it directed the machine just fine. Onward and forward!
@@IDCWoodcraft I forgot to add that the manufacturer didn't have anything and referred me back to the software company. I shared the email with them and they provided the video tutorial of how to manually set up a post processor!
This was terrific but I'd figured out most of it. What I don't yet know is how to get the software to see my CNC machine and connect! It must be intuitively obvious because I've been looking all day. I've watched several beginner tutorials and none of them tell me how to actually send my file to the machine.
Could you please help me with setting up my onefinity/ vectric sw for laser cutting. I can get my laser to creat a image real good ,but I can’t get it to cut out the Christmas stars. Thanks for your time..
Awesome videos for this newby.... Question.... Is there a way to load a G-Code file that was created with Bobcad into Vectric Aspire and edit it? I have a flash drive with several G-Codes for pool cue points and designs, but may want to change the size, etc. I read something about converting to DXT files (or something like that) and then you may could. Any clue?
kirkovercash, absolutely! You're definitely on the right track with your thinking my friend. But, this one is a little tricky to walk you through over comments. I recommend joining Kate and I for our weekly live session we host every Wednesday at 8PM EST and we should be able to help guide you through it then!
Hello Garrett, I have an older version of Aspire, version 9, and I am having some problems with the toolpaths. I manage to create my work and save it but when I take to my little CNC 3018 it does everything else except what it's supposed to. I was told that it could be related to the post processors. My CNC uses GRBL and I am not sure if it is compatible with Aspire. Is there any way to be certain if the two work well together? If not, is there anything I can do to fix the problem? I hope that you can help me out with this. Best wishes and thank you for your excellent tutorials. Thomas
Thomas, I recommend reaching out to your machine manufacturer for this one my friend. They'll be able to help you the best on which post processor will work with your specific machine!
Thanks for the great videos!! How do I run my job I have created? I was using Easel Pro, but have been messing around with Vcarve Desktop free trial. I want to send the "Avalon" sample job to my CNC. Do I need to export the gcode and use Easel Pro to send to my machine? Thank you
JeffGreen, so glad you liked this one brother! This one is a little tricky to walk you through over comments. I recommend joining Kate and I for our live sessions we host every Wednesday evening at 8PM EST. We should be able to help walk you through it then brother!
Update, I believe I got it installed. I had downloaded the Easel PP and installed it in Vcarve Desktop Trial. I them re-calculated my toolpaths and re-saved. Imported into Easel Pro and sent the job. its the sample Avalon one but it is running. I will definitely like to check out the Wed sessons!!@@IDCWoodcraft
So the Avalon sample is 2 toolpaths, it went and completed the pocket toolpath and looks great, however it didn't return to start position and hold for bit change. Then I presume I would change my window to the 2nd toolpath and start it up.
I must say I have learned SOOOO MUCH from your videos…..but now I’m stumped because when I open my Sainsmart CNC…I’m not able to find my code that I’ve generated via vetric. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. I need your help. I have went through the post processor selection options and selected Grbl
Willie, are you working with the trial version of the software? If so, you won't be able to generate the gcode. If not, I recommend sending a message over to vectric directly and they should be able to help you troubleshoot and give you a little better guidance than I can on this one! Here's their contact page just in case you need it: www.vectric.com/support

GARRETT I just purchased vectic desktop and have a Longmill 30x30 I just did a project and tried to run it and the machine doesnt run. I am using UGS have grbl in the list, but after listing to this maybe I have chosen the wrong one. Can you help me
I am using vcarve pro v12. I am also new to cnc routing. I looked at my projects and my post processor type. I have a mis-match. My material setup is inches, my tool is 1/8 inch but my grbl is (mm). That doesn't seem right. Your thoughts? Could explain why my sender software is having weirdness issue. seem logical to use either inches or mm from start to finish.
navarholmes6358, Yes, you've pinpointed a common issue that can indeed cause problems. When your material and tool settings are in inches, but your post-processor is set to millimeters, this mismatch can result in incorrect tool movements because the commands sent to the machine are in a different unit of measurement than expected. For a cohesive workflow, you should ensure that the units in your Vectric software match the units your machine is set to interpret. If your machine operates in inches, select an inch-based post-processor in VCarve Pro. If your machine operates in millimeters, choose a mm-based post-processor. This ensures that when you create a toolpath in VCarve Pro, the G-code generated will communicate with your machine in the correct units, avoiding any issues during the routing process.
Hi Mr. Fromme, I purchased an MK2 and Vcarve pro based on your recommendation. It Came yesterday, but I didn't get the purchased software, that I paid 699.00 for. Is there a special place needed to download and there must be registration numbers too? paperwork only shows ordered and paid for. Maybe you know where to get it. I emailed Sienci, but it said to expect 1-3 days for a response. I am impatient. Please help if you can. Thank you. Ps I did get my router bits I ordered from you and a few other nice treats... thank you Also i love your videos, they are so informative, and you are a great teacher.
Hi JT, it depends on where you purchased the software from. If you bought it from Sienci, they are the ones to talk to about getting your download and registration code. If they don't respond within your time frame, consider giving them a call. They are a great group of guys and gals.
Thank you Mr. Fromme. I figured it out. I have the software installed and working and registered under my name. I am still watching and loving your videos JT
Hi Garrett, my software just has the post processor drop down, it doesn't have the Machine drop down. And I noticed that the Machine menu is missing between the Model and Toolpaths menu at the top. What am I doing wrong?
So once the post processor is set up and selected in vcarve, do I set the toolpath info in vcarve like I did for a shopbot, or do I set up toolpaths in gsender once the project is designed, considering a vcarve pro /Longpath MV2 system. Does gsender work under wimdows operating system ir does it use it own. What are the laptop specs needed to run gsender, or am I even using gsender? I am totally confused. Purchasing mv2 and vcarve pro soon.. Paul Schuster

Juan, make sure the post processor you are using is configured to the same units that your CNC machine control software is set up to. If you are using a (mm) post processor, try selecting the (inch) post processor for your machine!
Thanks for another great video. I could use some help I’m a 75 year old newbie I have a cnc genmitsu 4040 pro I was using Easel and had no problem with my g code download to universal gcode sender. After watching you for a while I saw that I should be using VCarve desktop my problem I can’t figure out what post processor to use for my cnc. I tried looking at the genmitsu web site but couldn’t find any help If you could maybe point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Fred
From the thanks you received, viewers might be at varying levels. At 26:20, you say everything is "setup", but I didn't see how you got to Aspire and saved the file.
troymartell151, That's a great idea! A video on post-processors specifically for the Shapeoko 5 Pro could really help many users optimize their setups. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Garret I am currently running a stratos pro cnc router with a fanuc controller i can not find a post processer on there list that wants to work on my cnc .can a guy get one made for it or is that not possible ?who do a guy get to make a post-processor if that is an option. Thanks Garret.
Wow nice machine Mark. That machine is a serious industrial piece of kit. You will have to reach out to the gents at Stratos to get you squared away with the equipment to run that bad boy properly.
davidorourke9920, Switching to GRBL mm would change the unit of measurement used in the software from inches to millimeters. This means all your measurements and tool paths would be in millimeters instead of inches. Just make sure to adjust your design accordingly when switching between the two units.
Question; I created a project did the tool path. I uploaded it to Gsender and and my 3018 pro max starts the job. The problem is the project is supposed to be 6”x5”x1/2” cutout but it turns out being less than a inch and not all the way through even after the warning that it would. What could I be doing wrong?
corejr691, it sounds like you are using the wrong post processor. If you are using grbl (mm) consider switching it to grbl(inch) and vice versa brother! That should fix your problem.
@@IDCWoodcraft I’ve changed everything to inch that I could find, I’ll go back to mm. This machine came pre-installed with candle. The z and y axis try’s to exceed the limit switches and z axis moves upwards whether I hit raise or lower. Thinking maybe I should change the control board. What do you think?.
Paul, I'm sorry. I do not have a video on that subject at the moment. It is one that I've been asked about so has gotten on the "video to make" list. As far as time frames, I cannot say when it will be done.
luckyanjeh4418, that is a tricky one brother. I would recommend you reach out to your controller manufacturer to find the specific post processor that works for your controller.
Garrett I got a red message Sorry The Trial version of the software can only save toolpaths for data from the supplied tutorial files. Please load an unmodified tutorial file to test machined output. I guess it’s not true trial software!
Sean, I know that is frustrating, but it is just that, trial software. If you want to save your gcode you do have to purchase the software. I don't make the rules for Vectric or have any say regarding those things. I hope you're having great success with whatever version you choose.

Mark, glad you liked this one brother!
How do you know if the post processor is inch or metric? PS still running your bits and they're holding up fantastic.
D Barger, usually the title of the post processor will say gbrl (inch) or gbrl(mm) denoting what unit of measure.
Great video. Thank you.
Lynn, you are so welcome my friend.
This was terrific but I'd figured out most of it. What I don't yet know is how to get the software to see my CNC machine and connect! It must be intuitively obvious because I've been looking all day. I've watched several beginner tutorials and none of them tell me how to actually send my file to the machine.
Hey Peter, I just saw you other comments. You will need to be using a post-processor (such as UGS) to send it to your machine.
Could you please help me with setting up my onefinity/ vectric sw for laser cutting. I can get my laser to creat a image real good ,but I can’t get it to cut out the Christmas stars. Thanks for your time..
Leslie, lasers have a hard time cutting through thick material. Have you considered instead using the router portion of your CNC?
I have a Phantom CNC (SCR model) and am unable to find a compatible post processor for cutting circles or arc.Do you know which one works>
Victor, I would recommend reaching out to Phantom about that one brother. They will have the most up to date post processor that you need.
Hello Garrett,
I have an older version of Aspire, version 9, and I am having some problems with the toolpaths.
THANK YOU!!
Adam, you are so welcome my friend.
Thank you and it is very useful tutorial. How to do multiple option/switch post processor (for multiple tool that require different set of instruction) Ex: T1 / T2 / T3 have different instruction. Therefor if T1 (Set of instruction no 1) and T2 no 2 and so on.
sufainahmad3575, you are so welcome brother! For that I would recommend reaching out to your machine manufacturer on the best post processor to use for different tools.
Thank you very much @@IDCWoodcraft
GARRETT I just purchased vectic desktop and have a Longmill 30x30 I just did a project and tried to run it and the machine doesnt run. I am using UGS have grbl in the list, but after listing to this maybe I have chosen the wrong one. Can you help me
Harold, that problem could be a bunch of things. Shoot me an email and I can help you better there.
Got it now thanks. Mark
MarkJoy, right on brother! Glad to hear you got it sorted.
I am still watching and loving your videos
JT
Hi Garrett, my software just has the post processor drop down, it doesn't have the Machine drop down. And I noticed that the Machine menu is missing between the Model and Toolpaths menu at the top. What am I doing wrong?
Scott, send me an email with a screenshot to garrett@idcwoodcraft.com. I can help you better that way.
Paul, I recommend taking a look at this video here brother: th-cam.com/video/wQ0vgXbSRr4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=troyJ6YRR9Ath2My. I think you'll find it super helpful! Hi Garrett i have a aspire 11.5 and i try tu cut a circle 35 inches on diameter and wen i take it to the machine only cuts a 3 1/2 inch circle can you help me please and thank you have blessed day
Juan, make sure the post processor you are using is configured to the same units that your CNC machine control software is set up to. If you are using a (mm) post processor, try selecting the (inch) post processor for your machine!
@@IDCWoodcraft thank you sir i will try it
Thanks for another great video.
I tried looking at the genmitsu web site but couldn’t find any help
If you could maybe point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Try using grbl (mm) or grbl (inch) brother!
@@IDCWoodcraft thalami’s my friend will do
Got it. Thanks man!
Myerin, No problem 👍
From the thanks you received, viewers might be at varying levels. At 26:20, you say everything is "setup", but I didn't see how you got to Aspire and saved the file.
trumpetflowerll, you bring up an excellent point my friend. I will be sure to include this in future videos, thanks for sharing your insight!
Can you do a video on a post-processor for a shapeoko 5 pro 4x4
troymartell151, That's a great idea!
Thank you
titotorres5456, You're welcome! Happy woodworking!
Thanks!
Leon, you bet! Thank you for supporting me and what I do brother!
if you select GRBL mm instead of inches what effect would it have? (I work in inches)
davidorourke9920, Switching to GRBL mm would change the unit of measurement used in the software from inches to millimeters.
Thanks i wasn't sure, just in case it gat changed for some reason .
George, no problem!
So, do you explain what a post processor is, somewhere else?
Paul, I'm sorry. I do not have a video on that subject at the moment. It is one that I've been asked about so has gotten on the "video to make" list. As far as time frames, I cannot say when it will be done.
Perhaps a silly question but is there any free software that works? Or do I have to spend $700 in order to use my CNC machine?
Robert, try out carbide create brother! A lot of other CNCers really enjoy using that software!
@@IDCWoodcraft thank you brother wish me luck. No success yet 😞
@@3DogsCustomEngraving you'll get it!
Hi ,how about people who are using DSP A11 controller system to transfer CAD to CAM.
luckyanjeh4418, that is a tricky one brother. I would recommend you reach out to your controller manufacturer to find the specific post processor that works for your controller.
@@IDCWoodcraft thanks
Garrett I got a red message Sorry The Trial version of the software can only save toolpaths for data from the supplied tutorial files. Please load an unmodified tutorial file to test machined output. I guess it’s not true trial software!
Sean, I know that is frustrating, but it is just that, trial software. If you want to save your gcode you do have to purchase the software. I don't make the rules for Vectric or have any say regarding those things. I hope you're having great success with whatever version you choose.
do you chat through emails ?
