- Pacific Nationals loaded coal train from Tahmoor Colliery to Port Kembla Inner Harbour, running as train number TM94 came to grief when passing over the Suttor Road level crossing just east of Moss Vale on the Unanderra to Moss Vale Line. The second bogie on the 14th wagon derailed and was dragged approximately three kilometres, causing minor damage to concrete sleepers, the concrete base of the level crossing, and cutting wires for the track circuits. The wagons on this train are a permanent three pack configuration with a draw bar. Thankfully, the derailed wagon was loaded, one with a draw bar fitted, and the train was travelling at a slow speed due to turnouts, otherwise this derailment could have been a lot worse. The locomotives are in push pull configuration with three EMD locomotives in the form of 8238 on the lead, and 8209 & 8225 on the rear.
Those sparks and sounds is something that you would see in a movie.
Holy cow, that jump as it goes over the crossing. And this happened only yesterday too, wow
It sounded like a steam train lol
I don't care how far back, I'd be terrified for the train, equipment, and crew.
Amazing you caught that on camera
1:54 Sparks!!!!
Yes, sparks are a result of a wheel/s derailing
“Aye, do you feel something? Almost like we’re dragging something?”
“Nah, give her more throttle”
Dispatch to Crew : “At 0:49 I see the next grade crossing re-rail nicely!! Soooo… you’re still gonna make it there as if your life depends on it at no fault to me?! …. RIGHHHTTT!!!!!???? …..”
This is why i have train controls emergency number saved on my phone.
Why is the crossing bell a siren? That is very weird, if you are wondering why the time says 00:42 AM, it’s regular for that on a 24 hour time clock. The time it was recorded was 12:42 AM
As an american. Let me use 12:01 AM for an example. 12:01 AM would be less confusing than 00:01 AM to me
Rails of Alabama 2020 ok thank you. Nice to hear a fellow American by a fellow Canadian eh?
How com miye ho chraians doesn't work?????
whats up with the siren? never seen that before
Its typical over here for pedestrian crossing, and this crossing has a pedestrian crossing fitted to the left. The road isnt a main road so im assuming that the pedestrian siren is deemed enough. Also for the near by houses i assume as well
At 0:59 it makes me confused and a bit mad how it says “Thankfully, the derailed wagon was loaded,”
Well, if you had of kept reading the rest of it, you would have answered your own question. If it was not empty, there would be no weight pushing down on the wagon. If empty, the wagon would have jumped around and caused an even worse derailment. Also, being a permanently coupled wagon with a draw bar aslo helped minimize the derailment.
So before you go saying what i wrote has made you mad, please read the rest of the words after. That way you will understand why.
Additionally, I myself am confused as well, as to why it would make you mad?
Thanks
@@MAPVTrainsAustralia permanently coupling the cars is a bad idea for the reason the video shows if they werent coupled permanently they may have gotten uncoupled and the train went into emergency.
also, those locos with the two front ends is bad idea the engineer cant look back like the one's here in the states, if he could im sure he would have seen the sparks and stopped the train.
Permanently coupled wagons are designed to stop the jack knifing effect, which reduces the risk of wagons going everywhere.
Locomotive in push pull mode or ECP mode have been around for years, if it was an issue, it would not be allowed and would have stopped years ago.
Im not sure what you mean as the driver cant look back like in the states ?? Our locomotives are fitted with side mirrors to look back along the train. But since it was foggy, that reduces the distance one can see. Hence the reason as to why the crew did not see the sparks.
@@MAPVTrainsAustralia Then the engineer should have been fired if cant see the sparks from only 14 cars back he must have been asleep. Also engineers monitor the amp meter in the cab and notice any increase, a sign that something is dragging.
@@hifijohn 😂😂😂 you really have no idea what you're talking about and are proving to everyone that you really are a complete tool! With only one bogie derailed, you wont notice any difference in the amp meter or anything. And again the fog has played apart in not seeing anything. Just because it doesnt look that foggy in the video, it doesnt do it justice. Saying that the driver should have been fired proves you're a wanker and know absolutely nothing
Did u attempt to call someone like ARTC or any authorities
You obviously didn't watch the entire video as the answer to your question is at 04:02 - 04:06 where I state my actions. I have had a formal interview with Pacific National and have an appreciation letter to show for it. Being a driver myself, I actually rang Main South A Board (who control that section of track) directly.
@@MAPVTrainsAustralia sorry for my mistake
INCREDIBLE catch!
Was the derailed wagon damaged?
doesnt seem like
Maybe the wheels

You can visit this link. It is the offical ATSB report into the derailment.
Downloading the PDF will provide photos of the damage sustained to the rollingstock and infrastructure.
What caused the bogie to derail ?
Was a through axle failure, a fracture in the axle. The final report can be read here: www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2019/rair/ro-2019-013/
At 1am would of been creepy
Sounds like a steam engine
Sounds more like an alco
like a my ho trains :V
Bit of damage lol!
Not as much damage as it could have possibly been, luckily !
