Brilliant reaction. Dimash always amazes us. He reminded me of an ancient shaman using the magic of his voice to summon the primal forces of the wind and the tempest to do his bidding. Loved the performance and loved your analysis and reaction. I always look forward to your Dimash videos.
In 1916, during World War I, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilised for army and labour brigades in the war effort.
Samaltau, which means mountain breeze, is a Kazakh folk song about a 24-year-old recruit walking from Samal village to Omsk, as he was forced to register for the Russian military. He has been walking for 15 days and has almost reached Omsk.
    Samaltau Lyrics
Samaltau, my native land the endless sea...
What fate awaits me in a soldier's life?
I can't stop thinking back to my ancestral home,
where I was born and raised.
    I'm not riding, I'm walking...
I'm not even walking, I'm dragging myself...
    After fifteen days of wandering
    We are approaching Omsk...
I am the age of two cycles [24 years], born in the Year of the Ox.
Fate has cast me into a foreign land.
Samaltau, my holy land has been left far behind.
We are like a herd of lost horses.
    I have a mother and a father
    They are of advanced years
The sorrows and heartache of 1916
Drove me to sing this song.
Samaltau, my native land, the endless sea...
What fate awaits me in a soldier's life?

One of the most interesting parts to me (more noticeable in his studio performance for the Tokyo Jazz Festival) is the way he directs his gaze. Sometimes his eyes are closed, almost in pain; in other places he seems to stare into the distance--but he always maintains an inwardly focused look--remembering his homeland. The music comes out of him as an expression of the intense feelings of the character he is portraying; you get the sense that even if there were no one watching, the music would stay the same thing because his emotions are bursting out of his being.
There is one shot in the studio version toward the beginning of the piece right before he starts singing where the camera is focused on his face--his eyes are closed as if in pain, maybe more meditative acutally. The camera pans down to his hands and then back to his face--and his eyes are OPEN, staring into the distance. It always gives me chills.

Sometimes i am afraid he never gonna be a popular artist because most of the people are not interesting on this type of music, but he really loves it, so i just hope he is proud of what he is achieving, because as you said, i am Mexican and I cant help but feel the respect for his culture that he conveys on his performance. Thank you for your time and your video.

I think “to be popular” is quite not his goal. And i’m not regretting with the fact that he isn’t more popular. I’m happy with him to be most beloved and most appreciated artist by fans, and most respected artist by regular listeners. His music is special, spiritual, grand and tasteful. His music is not for everybody. I prefer him to do music that he actually likes and wants, not compromising with situations and trends. I think his goal is not to be popular, but to touch and affect more people by his music. Maybe he is not going to be trendy, but he will always have his audience. Sorry for my poor English.

This song introduced me to Dimash a year ago. I never considered singing as a story telling. But after his performance there were tears in my eyes and I felt the pain and sorrow on my chest. I felt like i was that soldier he is singing about. Nobody in Kazakhstan (at least i never heard a person) can sing folk kazakh songs like him. Nobody. I dream about him sing aaaaall kazakh folk songs.

Dear Cedric, always a pleasure to see you and listen to a Dimash reaction! His Kazakh songs are so intense, and authentic, even more than other songs although it shouldn't be possible because Dimash is in all his songs so great and with such a great stage presence and ability to tell his stories... Samaltau is really one of my all time favorites, and I would love you to react to more of his Kazakh songs, e.g. Qaragym-ai (the tribute to his mentor who died, 2020 - or 2021 from the Digital Show), Amanat, Adai + Daididau (Bastau 2017) - all on his TH-cam channel. And there are a lot more songs I want you to experience! ;-) Thank you Cedric, hope to see you soon, best wishes from Germany!

👉This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - th-cam.com/video/PqxhtBecVeg/w-d-xo.html )
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

At the beginning of the song, the sounds of the Great Steppe of Kazakhstan at night were masterfully imitated on the Kazakh ancient folk instrument KOBYZ. We hear howl wolves, barking dogs, the cries of cranes, the noise of water in the river... /// The song "Samal Tau" is considered folk. Its plot is connected with the events of 1916. That year, many men were mobilized for World War I, which was in Europe. /// The guy walks along the steppe road at night and sings a song about having left his native home and old parents, native mountains "Samal Tau". The guy doesn't know what lies ahead in the war. He doesn't know if he'll return from the war to his home. /// Dimash sings this song in Kazakh. The song premiered on October 20, 2019 in China at the closing of the 6th Silk Road International Film Festival

Hi Cedric ! We miss you in the Dimash reactions world ! He has a new MV :) Posted days after his 28th birthday ! I`ll leave the backstory for it, waiting to hear your filmmaker`s analysis of it :)
Video director Alina Veripia created 4 scenarios for the MV, and Dimash picked this one. She described the idea behind it : “This is a very beautiful and deep love story that takes place during the years of Stalin’s repressions. In this horror, in this piercing cold, in this crime, the love of two people is born, as if they did not come from this world. And they are so pure, so beautiful in their feelings, that no darkness can extinguish this light." On the question of location, the team made an unanimous decision to shoot the MV in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of > 1937. Dimash establishes the timeline - "we found each other" first, then "now you are with someone else". The couple`s enemy is an NKVD officer who wants to claim our hero`s girl for himself. The officer represents power, so he can claim anything he wants, and he can get away with anything. "Under Stalin, on the orders of the NKVD, anyone could be arrested, imprisoned or shot as an enemy of the people." - as another user commented. Beauty of good, love, purity, and evil`s attempt to destroy it, in a harsh era in history.

There is another great performance of Qaragym ai in the same Digital Show where he performed the version of Samaltau that you just reacted to. It's very different but also very moving and beautiful. May I explane to "being soldier" problem, Sir? It is never be problematic "being soldier" for Turkic nations. We are men and women are natural born legendary soldiers FOR OUR OWN STATES. Russian Tsar, forced the Kazakh people to war. There were treaty terms for Nomads and Russia: Nomads were paying tax but never been soldiers. Tsar, banished them from their rangelands to deserts before. Their horses and bovine animals were died. People was starving. And then, Tsar enrolled their sons into military forces for WW1. Those Kazakh soldiers had no horses and no guns. They just digged trenchs in hard conditions. Turkic nomad warriors is master of horseback combat. Tsar aimed to insult the Kazakh people in this way. Elders left behind died of starvation. These are symbols of all difficult periods in the life of nation in "Samaltau" epitome: war, hunger, epidemics, poverty ...
For WW2: Kazakhs were parts of the Soviet Union. Soviet Union fighted against na.zis. There were already Kazakh soldiers and war heroes in this war. Dimash singing proudly "Aliya" song for medalled war heroine and sniper Kazakh women soldier. Still Stalin tyrannised Kazakh People despite of their heroism. He banned Kazakh cultural signs and imprison their poets and teachers and then murdered them. Also Dimash singing "Daididau" for that historical reason. If I am wrong, please historians correct me. I will appreciate them.

Samaltau is one of my all time favorites of his. Each performance of this song is special and I really encourage you to watch them. The first one I ever saw was at the Silk Road Film Festival. The set is stunning and you would appreciate it! However, for me, I think the 2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival is the very best performance of this song. Such an intimate setting and I really feel his connection to the music. (I mean I always do, but more so in that performance). You are right and many of us Dears feel that there is something special when he sings Kazakh songs. He keeps teasing us with an all Kazakh album, always telling us "soon"!

His expressions of love and emotion are in everything he does including his lifestyle….and are sooo addictive.

This song is about World War I, when many Kazakh young men were taken to fight on trenches. It's
the lament of a young soldier who had to leave his family and land and fight in a war that they did not understand.
Kazakhstan was part of the Russian Empire and after the war, it became part of soviet union till 1991, when it got the independence.

Cedric as always so professional, educational and great in your analysis. Here I leave you some of the history of this beautiful song of Kazakh folklore and what it means for Dimash to interpret it.
"For Dimash, this is the most difficult song to sing emotionally, because of the story behind it. Samaltau means Mount Samal. The lyrics are sad because it refers to when in 1916 the Russians recruited young Kazakhs and forced them to fight in World War I. According to the lyrics, a young man marching towards the battle zone thinks about what awaits him, and suffers for what will happen to his parents, who are old and left alone, and who may not return alive from the war. On the way he also thinks that it will be the last time he will see his house and his beautiful mountains. For Dimash, family unity and love for her is one of the greatest things, hence the difficulty in interpreting her .
The Russian tsar and recruiters treated us like cattle (they didn't feed us, they kept us in unsanitary conditions). That is why, out of 400,000 (Kazakh) soldiers recruited in the first months, 150,000 died of disease and starvation. They did not give us weapons, they fought with shovels against cannons and rifles. Of the 400,000 Kazakh soldiers, 300,000 conscripted Kazakhs did not return home (the fate of the author of this song is unknown - perhaps he died in that war).
    Greetings and blessings from Panama.

Thank you for your brilliant reaction, Cedric💖 When Dimash sings Kazakh songs, he invites us to his intimate inner world, reveals his secret feelings and tells amazing stories. Regardless of whether it is a story about a broken heart or a great steppe, Kazakh songs are closest to him and sung most beautifully. And when the audience at the concert sings them along with him, Dimash is then the happiest man in the world - his childhood dream comes true😍 At the concert in Düsseldorf, which I attended a month ago, when the whole audience was singing the chorus of his songs, Dimash had tears in his eyes ... And we also cried with him that happiness and love💖Cedric, I also wish you such an experience😍 Kisses from Poland 🇵🇱💋

When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia (In 1916/17, First World War), young Kazakhs were forced, by the Russian Empire, to leave their homes and fight 35 years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who marches in despair to a war that is not his, in addition to the sadness of leaving his parents, elders, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains ("tau") of Kazakhstan again. this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful setting and fantastic musician: Olzhas Qurmanbek, Master of Playing the Qobyz (Kobyz, which looks like a violin: An instrument of Turkish origin, sacred in Kazakhstan).

song is special to Dimash, quote DI:
"Because it contains all the sadness, all the suffering of the Kazakh people, it reflects the difficult times of the nation, very difficult work.
It is difficult to do emotionally, not technically. The strength of this song is such that people who do not know the Kazakh language, without understanding the words, immediately understood what it was about. Because after it was performed, the audience sitting in the stadium reacted with a deafening storm of applause ... That's when I realized how powerful this song is!"
This instrument is Kobyz, a Kazakh folk instrument and can often be heard in Dimash's works.
Olzhas Qurmanbek is the master of the Kobyz game.

Thanks again for another wonderful reaction. Dimash is Dimash, no other words to say. Love this song, especially this version, it was from his online concert during the Covid shutdown. So happy things are slowly getting back to somewhat normal, that he finally got to finish his ARNAU concert tour last month. So happy to see you, and happy things seem to be going well for you, will be looking forward to find out more details about the project you have been working on lately. Sending love and prayers from Pennsylvania. 🎼🎶🎤🇰🇿❤️🇺🇸❤️🙋🏻‍♀️🙏🏼

Too many of them already.!! I love what You have to say...and I am really Happy when your feelings match what I have been feeling/thinking!!😄😉 I often feel that different ancestors speak through his voice in these Kazhak songs...as if he somehow channels them. (No!! I DO NOT go to seances or fortune tellers..😄😄😄🤪) I just think Dimash is uniquely in touch with history and tradition in his Beloved country...and thru his strong Muslim faith. Thanks for such a Good one..🙏🙏🙏. Take care of Yourself!!

Always enjoy your analysis of Dimash's music. With this song I strongly suggest listening to the Tokyo Jazz 2020 version. Is very stripped back studio version. But aside from the Kobyz, it includes a Sybyzgy(Native flute) and a rain stick. Which I feel takes the song to another level .

Kazakhstan had only gained its independence from Russia just three before Dimash was born. Dimash has a powerful love and devotion to his country. He almost always sings Daididau at all of his concerts. When he appeared on the Singer 2017, he said that he had achieved his dream of singing Daididau for the world to hear.

Samaltau does have an intensely historic feeling and Dimash reflects this beautifully. Always enjoy your reactions and your analyses (even if you initially messed up, it truly is not a big deal. Samaltau may not be the oldest, but it is still in the style of traditional Kazakh music. Yes, it is the qobyz /kobyz providing the ambiant feeling of howling wolves and intense nature.). Cheers from Canada!

Thank you so much. I am an avid fun of Dimash. As my grandfather was also exiled (from Poland) to Siberia somehow the emotion of this song moves me so much. The vocalise in the version of Samaltau he sung for the Tokyo Jazz Festival is even more dramatic.
If you like a singer with amazing emotional expression listen please to Take what you want by One ok rock from Japan. Also seeing 55 thousands strong crowd in total silence in the concert version of the song in Tokyo Dome concert is out of this world.

I think this song is absolutely beautiful and so so powerful. I personally prefer the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020 version, and I think you should watch that one. Since you've already reacted to the song, you should just watch it on your own time. Notice the different atmosphere and feeling from this one and the vocal changes he makes ... while sitting cross-legged ... on a piano stool. Dimash is not even human. I can't have a conversation if I'm sitting cross-legged but he can BEND OVER while singing and then belt a 15 second run. Jerk. Anyway, 😂 great reaction.
I am in love with the Stranger performance, but if I had to pick a favorite live performance (taking into account the stage and background dancers) it would probably be Screaming Idol Hits 2019 th-cam.com/video/UBgueGdgh4g/w-d-xo.html (link provided for future reference because I'm cool like that). As much as I would love to see you react to that one, since you've already reacted to a live performance of that song, you should at least watch it on your own.

Loved the observation about his reestablishing the phonation when he jumps that 4th. I get what you mean about the dramatic effect - it's an EVENT, a newly created happening in the song, a new energy lent to that repeated refrain. Thanks! You get me thinking creatively.

My favorite version of this song is from the Tokyo Jazz Festival recorded in his home studio. It’s much more intimate and I think the instrumentation is even more telling the story of the soldier wandering to war. And I appreciate that there is no distracting stage setting.

If you want more kazakh songs from him, I absolutely love "Daididau" and his original song "Unforgettable Day" where he hits the highest note a male singer has ever sung in Gakku concert I believe its name.
I checked out your reactions and it seems you have yet to react to Diva dance so I also recommend ther performance with Li Yugang singing "Drunken Concubine + Diva Dance", this is the performance that fully display nearly all his 6 octaves and techniques. It's definitely a must watch.
Thank you for the reactions, I absolutely love them and how you genuinely enjoy and appreciate his songs and efforts.
