    ❤️BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY❤️
    JOHN 15:18-21
    18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.

    He keeps calling him Mr. Frodo because Sam worked for Bilbo. More exactly, the Gamgees (Sam's family) worked as the groundskeepers to the Baggins estate, so the relationship between Sam and Frodo reflects this sort of "My dad works for your dad" kind of relationship. Even though Frodo doesn't make it a big deal, Sam is always sure to show a level of societal respect for Frodo.

    • @custardflan
      @custardflan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      British society was, and maybe still is, very class oriented. Tolkien intentionally based Sam on a servant, or batman, that he had as an officer in World War I. NOtice how nobody gives hardly a second thought to Sam. The HObbits are the common man in this story and Sam is the commonest of them all.

    • @johronok4067
      @johronok4067 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well Frodo is also much older than Sam is, 51 to 20 something, so think of a 25-30 year old to a kid of maybe 15 or 16 years in terms of humans.

    • @Bear78420

      @@johronok4067 true except that merry n pip are in their twenties. Sam’s in his thirties. Tho thirties to hobbits is like twenties to us, but just saying. It is something that bugged me in the movies, tho they did a great job, Frodo seeming so young n baby faced was always off for me. Faramir first taking Frodo n sam then releasing them. Glorfindel saved Frodo, not Arwen. Frodo NEVER sends Sam away. If anything their friendship was even tighter in the book. They disagreed about trusting Gollum, sure, but they only separated by accident in Shelob(giant spider)cave. And, the battle of the shire, where Saruman actually dies. It seemed important that it was showing the evil even touched the far away, peaceful lands of the shire. Also the movie didn’t do a good job of showing the darkness that Sauron covered the land in, so during the battle at helms deep when Gandalf arrives with help, and during the battle in Gondor when Rohan arrives, the sun breaking through the darkness is a turning point to both those battles. No Tom Bombadil bothered me. And, in the books, Bill the pony was a character. They were actually sad to leave him at the mines of Moria and later save him on their way home. Not a big deal but a detail I always really liked ☺️

      @@Bear78420 What makes for a good movie and what makes for a good book are not the same thing. I think Jackson did an excellent job at keeping what he needed, knowing what had to be cut, and knowing where he could make changes. You have to remember 98% of the people who watch these movies have never read the books, nor will they ever. To add all the things you mentioned would unnecessarily bloat the story and lead to a bunch of incredibly long slow boring stretches of movies. It might please the book fans to see those moments, but it makes the overall movies objectively worse, especially for the much larger non-book reading audience.

    • @polferiferus1938
      @polferiferus1938 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KS-xk2so Sadly, I’ve never been able to finish any of the books except The Hobbit (maybe one day. It takes a lot of patience, and I can only read as fast as I can narrate it in my head). My brother, who’s read and re-read all of the books in the series, says Tom Bombadil is, in his view, the “soul” of the book, and a key figure thematically; that without that character, the meaning of the story is changed completely. A workmate of mine said something similar. Then again, other avid Tolkien fans have told me that Bombadil is peripheral, and more of a side story within the story. I won’t have an opinion until I complete reading at least the first book, but I can see how to some people axing that character in particular could kind of ruin the movie(s) for them. Obviously, people interprete the books’ meanings in quite a few ways.
      I only relay this to say that depending on what gets cut (I agree, it would be nearly impossible not to cut some things; perhaps quite a lot) it might actually make the films worse, not better. But, until someone creates remakes some day, which I wouldn’t rule out, and makes very different decisions than Jackson did, we can’t compare to know.
      For me, I more or less enjoyed the series, but did feel like the length(s) were a bit tiring. And the one book I completed, The Hobbit, was absolutely amazing! Way better than any of the screen adaptations by far. Just my opinion.

    The only chance I had to give a "first time watch" of Lord of The Rings to a friend, he had a pet bird that had a little heart-attack and died the moment the wraiths started screeching at Frodo. The poor thing just fell over dead, done with life. As that kind of brought it to an end I consider any first time watch to be good so long as no more birds die in the process. In other words... nice one! Congrats!

      Boromir is 100% right, he knows Mordor better than any of them (yeah Elrond was there but long time ago). Boromir is also right - realistically there's no way bunch of hobbits or even full fellowship could successfully accomplish this mission, and it makes no sense to send the ring directly to Sauron.
      But yeah, with the power of plot armor they made it... all of them, except poor Boromir.

    5:15 Please note; while it is not mentioned in the movie; from the time Gandalf leaves The Shire to seek information on the One Ring to the time he returns, 17 years pass. Frodo was 33 at the time of Bilbo's 111th birthday, the year of a Hobbit's coming of age, or age of majority. He (Frodo) leaves on his adventure at the age of 50, the same age Bilbo left with the Dwarves on the Quest of Erebor.

    Tolkien was a devout Christian, but felt the loss of ancient spirituality in his culture, in the small towns of England, and tried his best to bridge that lost mysticism with Christianity. I think he did a beautiful job. If you want more details on that, you're gonna have to buckle down and read The Silmarillion. Or find someone's very detailed notes. Lol. That extra stuff will also explain why it's actually totally normal that Gandalf doesn't appear to have aged. If that sparks your further interest. 😉
    As a kid sent to CCD every Saturday for 8 years, the story of this world (all books, notes, histories and appendices) softened the bitterness that the Catholic church seeded in me as a child. It's the most beautiful marriage of paganism and Christianity and i appreciate Tolkien so much.😭😍

    For someone who’s seen “The Hobbit” you only seem to have come away with a crush on Legolas. The prequel featured Frodo, Gollum, Saruman, Elrond (whom you recognised as Agent Smith), Rivendell, Gimli’s dad, Sauron (aka the Necromancer) and his ring-wraiths, Galadriel … it even mentioned Strider. You did recall the trolls, however, so I guess that’s something. 🤦‍♂️

    the "Mr. Frodo" thing has nothing to do with age in this context, it's hard for us Americans to understand it, but it was a thing in some cultures of the past(such as the time in which Tolkien grew up in England and before that as well) it was proper to refer to someone who was say a land owner as "Mr.", especially if, as in Sam's case, you work for that person, after all Sam is Frodo's gardener, which is more explicit in the book, the movies turned their relationship into more of a "drinking friend" thing, but it wasn't that in the books at all. Frodo was Sam's employer, and Sam was very loyal to him, and yes his friend, though that more or less developed as they went through their journey together. Watch or read any Jane Austin stories and you'll get a lot more context for the social dynamics of the Shire, as it is very similar.

    • @ronweber1402
      @ronweber1402 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not only that Frodo is significantly older than Sam. Frodo was in his 50's I think and Sam was just out of his tweens (which means early thirties for Hobbits).

    • @rendalconstantineau1680
      @rendalconstantineau1680 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ronweber1402 Well Sam was 39, and yeah Frodo was 50, but it had very little to do with that. In the books you will notice even Sam's Dad(the Gaffer), who is much older than Frodo, referring to Frodo as "Mr. Frodo" after Bilbo leaves, and of course calling Bilbo "Mr. Bilbo" before that as well. So, really it's not an age thing, it's more of the standing in the social construct of the time(which again was basically similar to that of England back at the turn of the last century and before).

    Sam is 38, Frodo is 50, but Hobbits live longer than Men. Sam calls Frodo, Mr Frodo because Sam is his gardener (employee/servant) BUT also it speaks to an old relationship between an english officer and his battman (you will need to look this up, it's whole own thing))

    Bilbo and Frodo are related but more distantly than the film suggests. They refer to themselves as uncle and nephew because otherwise it would take 5 minutes to explain the genealogy. Both Bilbo and Frodo are related distantly to Merry and Pippin as well.

      You need to remember, though, that hobbits live longer than we do and apparently develop slower - they call hobbits in their 20's "tweens" and look at them much the same way we look at teenagers. At the birthday party Frodo turns 33, which for hobbits is like our 21. So 50 for a hobbit is like maybe late 30's for us - solid adult, but not at all old yet.
