  • Here is my review (and comparaison) of the Barnes & Noble leatherbound classics edition of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy.
    The comparison is against the Everyman Library edition and the Arcturus edition.
    See it on Amazon.co.uk: amzn.to/2xHFvzk
    See it on Amazon.com: amzn.to/2xGSdOW
    The larger edition of the Divine Comedy which is visible here is the edition by Arcturus (UK only).

    Dear good sir, may I please ask if this has the complete 135 plates illustrations of Gustave Dore?

      Not sure if I just never answered this or if my answer got erased when I migrated the channel: yes, all the plates are present.

    Wow Denis, how far you've come in 5 years!! Love your beautiful Divine Comedy collection. Mind-boggling etchings. Adore the 'cinematic' version artwork. Labour of love for all who produced these masterpieces 🥰❤‍🔥

    Thank you very much for the Review of this piece of art my friend !! unfortunately, those books are too expensive in my country.(4 times the original price) But, thanks to you, I can, at least, see it better than by photos. thank you very much !!! Hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

    Excellent review! I'm getting this edition for my birthday and this seems to be pretty good. While the Longfellow translation isn't really my favorite either(I personally prefer the Ciardi translation), Gustave Dore's illustrations seem to help better understand the story of the book.

    Wait, so there's no footnotes? Someone told me there was. Can you recommend a version, or separate book, that adequately explains the Comedy, in detail, for absolutely beginners? Thank you.

    There were color illustrations of the Divine Comedy done centuries ago shown by Bodleian Libraries. I wonder if there are reproductions of this publication.

    im aware there are a lot of different translations to this book to understand it in a more modern sense . is this edition favorable for a beginner to “the divine comedy” ? and will i be able to understand it ? thanks and i am very grateful for all that you do !

      This translation is the best known mostly because it's in the public domain, so publishers can publish it for free. I definitely prefer the Everyman edition, but it doesn't have Gustave Doré's gorgeous illustrations.

    A de luxe edition of the collected writings, talks, interviews, etc of Noam Chomsky will one day be a treasured possession should the world avert the doom he has so eloquently, ably, uncompromisingly, and faithfully warned us against, along with sage advice on how to do so.

    I wish I could insert a photo. I have a Dante all most as big as the last one you showed but a little smaller, it will fit my shelf. But it was printed on 1948 by Pantheon Books. Same photos and translation as yours.

    ooohhhhhhhhh i didnt know the everymans library edition was illustrated! Thats on the list.
    ive got the Arcturus and canterbury classic editions but i dismantled the Arcturus edition for the huge plates for some cheap decoration.
    The everymans library books have been catching my eye lately, cloth binding is my thing.

    Apologize for bothering, but are there other difference between the Classic collection and Arcturus edition? I noticed that the Classic collection has a bit over 300 pages more than the Arcturus edition, though this may be due to the size difference. Other than that they seem to be the same, though I am uncertain.

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you, the Arcturus edition has 2 columns of text per page, whereas the B&N edition only has 1. Other than that, is the same translation, just bigger pictures and nicer paper on the Arcturus edition 😜

    • @eetukilpelainen
      @eetukilpelainen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FoolishFishBooks Thank you, this has helped me a great deal. I found the Arcturus edition more aesthetically pleasing so I was more interested in that one, but didn't want to risk losing content by choosing a book by it's cover. And no need to worry, we all have our own lives to live, and I do appreciate you taking time from yours to answer my trifling question.

    I don't know about these editions... they all look like those jewellery boxes from TJ Maxx that are supposed to look like old-timey books, as if burglars were dumb enough not to notice a huge-ass "antique" volume sitting on the shelf sandwiched between dystopian YA novels and old perfume boxes.
