  • Contestant Danny Roquet takes his 50 seconds to the limit, causing a stopdown, an awkward edit, and Marjorie Goodson to run up a flight of stairs quicker than anyone else, who ever wore high heels. Audio accentuated for clarity.

    The judge made the right call. At the 1:06 mark, the clock shows 00 before #14 was called. Also like Alex said, the buzzer was manually armed at the time.

      @@louistenore2185 Yea they got screwed. Beat the buzzer has always been the rule. Not the contestants fault the game operator was a bit late. Seen this on other shows from NBC including Super Password that also went on buzzer and would win on that not the clock.

    1:03 If he didn't pick 9, he would've won the Honda Civic! This is an epitome of how the 8th car--the Volkswagen Jetta in this case--is a Red Herring!

      Rules are rules. I get that it's against the house, but I'd want to know everyone, including myself, gets a fair shake. Especially when, at this point, bonus time was set regardless of how many times you yourself are up there.

    There’s another episode coming up soon on BUZZR where the same thing happened.
    A woman named Barbette guesses the last match and misses it by 1/100 of a second and she gets excited then Alex shows the replay and says she missed it by that much.

      You're probably right. Even though both shows were Mark Goodson productions, they must not have had the same judges. On Super Password, there was an incident in the end game where the buzzer, which was automatic, clearly rang out (and the clock reached 00) before the contestant said the final word, "INN". The judges threw the decision to Bert Convy (could they even do that?), and he chose to award her the $20,000 that was at stake.

    Said 14 on Double 0's but the Buzzer didn't sound til after he said it. Should've been a win IMO.

      He said 14 just a split-second after the clock hit 0, and back then, the buzzer was manual, so they had to go by the automatic clock (because going by a manual buzzer would have given contestants too much of an advantage). Therefore, he didn't win.

      @@PowerRangersandAnimeUnite Understand the ruling but it's bullshit given I can't think of any other show (off the top of my head) that went by the display IIRC, it was all about beating the sound of the buzzer. Poor ol' Danny, he deserved that Civic.

      Nowadays, all buzzers are automatic.

      Grey area ultimately nbc would pay prize. Rule must been if clock had NOT hit 00 would be win. It HAD hit 00

      Could have also been because they didn't want to give an inadvertent buzzer on a win if they could tell the final call was said before 00, and they needed to open the door.

    Had he not paused before he said “14”, I think he would’ve won (just barely). Judging from other episodes, contestants weren’t required to wait for the first panel to be shown before calling out the next number-they could call out a pair at once, and both doors would be opened.

      Jason Lovelady That didn’t start until later into the run. Contestants in the early months were often yelled at with “wait!” by the producer if they tried to go too quickly. With a last minute thing like this, though, I think it would’ve been okay.

    He got snubbed cause there’s another instance where a lady her name was Paula basically the same thing happened and she got awarded the car

      The rules state that if you begin your final call (i.e. the second number to match the seventh car) before the clock reads 00, you win. Not sure which episode you're referring to with this "Paula" contestant, but there have been a few episodes on BUZZR where the final call happens while the clock is going to 00 and is a win.

    The Pyramid rule would apply here. If the essence or key word of the correct answer come before the buzzer, you win.

      The buzzer was manual at the time. They had to go by the automatic clock. There were a lot of game shows that used, and went by, automatic buzzers at the time. Classic Concentration, with primitive technology and merely four months old by then, was not one of them.
      Danny said 14 just *after* the clock hit 0. He was definitely late.

      @@GamingDelight meaning that in your opinion what he said would basically be an understatement? (To be perfectly honest with you, I have never been able to fully understand why the contestants were even required to wait at all during the bonus round, since they did have to clear the board within the given time limit and they wouldn't win anything unless they were able to successfully match ALL 7 car pairs.) (I think that was the amount of time a contestant was required had to wait to call the second number was it not?) or that the judges did indeed make the right decision in this particular situation?
