This is the 1774 French version of the opera. The original Vienna Italian version had the role of Orfeo sung by a castrato, but when Gluck decided to have it performed in Paris, he had to rearrange it to suit the French tastes of the time. The libretto was translated into French, and as castrati were not fashionable at all in France, Gluck had to transpose the entire role of Orfeo (now Orphée) for a high tenor voice. This version also included a vastly expanded amount of ballet music, again following the French taste of the time.

Really? this is transposed UP from the usual mezzo version (which is the key baritones also use in this role. ) I like boys to sing boy parts. Old fashioned. Or new?

I am torn between the great Maria Callas and Magdalena Kozena version of J'ai Perdu Mon Euridice both are exceptionally good. I feel personally that the strings in Kozena's version give that version the edge. As I said both versions great.
I certainly agree with you as regards Callas even though the voice was in its last stages. She knew by sheer instinct how to sing Gluck ; I wish she had recorded more of Orphee's music.

Nah, this is the original tonality for the FRENCH version of the opera. It was transposed for the Haute-contre Joseph Legros.
