    In English “lay” takes an object (transitive verb) and means to put or set something down while “lie” is intransitive (does not take an object) and means to be in a horizontal position. So one should say “the plate is lying on the table. Please lay the plate on the table.” But tenses do get tricky: to lie = lie lay lain (irregular) while to lay = lay laid laid (regular)

    In Norrland, the word "he" is used. You can say that instead of "sätt" "lägg" "ställ".

    But it is not something you find in the dictionary.
    But it is common in northern dialects.

    Interesting. I mean this 'put' part. I feel like it's even more difficult in Ukrainian, we would also usually put something 'lying' or 'standing' on the table, but it looks less logical. Yeah, the plate will be put 'lying' on the table, and the cup will 'stand' there, but the frying pan will 'stand' there also. And when you put a little bird on top of the table, the sparrow will 'sit' there. Even though it actually stand on its two legs =)
    Uhm, the mouse would 'sit' on the table, too. On its four legs, yeah. I said it has less logic in it =)

      Very good question! In that situations you could use all of them I think. • @plerpplerp5599
    @plerpplerp5599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    English is a germanic language so it has an equivalent of lägga/ligga which is in lay/lie.
    However, most native English speakers typically use these verbs incorrectly.
    They often say "I am laying on the bed" when they should say "I am lying on the bed".

    • @TaylorAP13
      @TaylorAP13 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on your rhetoric it would seem you are a non-native English speaker. So first, sort of weird for a non-native English speaker to tell us how we use our language "incorrectly." Lay is in fact the irregular past tense verb for lie. Lay is a verb which requires a direct object and lie is a verb which does not.
      The difference between your two sentences is that "I am laying on the bed" means you have been lying on the bed for some time. It is past tense. You are not just currently laying on the bed you have been laying in bed. When you say, "I am lying on the bed" what you are saying is that you are, present tense only, lying in bed.
      If a person tells you they are, "laying on the bed," they mean that they having been in bed for some extended amount of time. Where as if they say they are, "lying on the bed," then that means they have probably just gotten onto the bed.
      Also, most people would say they are, "laying/lying in bed." Because you are probably under your blankets. If you say you are "lying on the bed" you are implying that you are lying on top of your blankets.
