Flying Long Range FPV with the GNB 7000mAh 70c LiHV Battery

  • I was quite surprised by the weight VS capacity & performance of this GNB LiHV battery. GNB has been slowly lowering the weight of their lipo packs while also increasing the capacity at the same time. This battery provides for some long flight times while still managing to put out more current than any li-ion pack can.

    I"m glad you finally got a chance to try the HV7000 packs. They are awesome - I love them (as you know, hahah!) . I've used lots of HV packs and something that you need to keep in mind is that they don't last nearly as long in terms of usable cycles as regular lipos. The chemistry starts to die much more quickly when charged to 4.35v. What I do is charge them to 4.1v (or sometimes 4.2), then in the field I'll top them up to 4.35 so they are at 4.35v for the minimum amount of time possible. This should extend the life of them pretty dramatically, otherwise you're probably going to start seeing them degrade after 20 cycles or so depending on how long they sit at 4.35... and they are expensive batteries!

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ah yes, that's what I was expecting. I'll try your idea of charging to 4.2 and then topping the battery off to 4.35 just before using it.

      I keep thinking about building BNF long range drones to sell, but it's really tough to compete with the prices of ones that are built in china. I am still thinking about it though, since I can't beat the iflight and GepRC prices I may go for a high quality type of build, like including a diversity RX and good quality antennas for the RX and VTX as well as the benefits of my frames designs.

      Pretty sure you could exist in a niche. Don't even think about competing with iFlight though. Go for the prosumer and pro market and price accordingly. You can't make many and the market is quite small. Got to be north of $1000.

    If you're using helicals on the DJI goggles then you need to check that they have a low VSWR. A low VSWR doesn't matter much for analog because the analog goggles don't transmit but the DJI goggles do and a high VSWR will produce very poor transmit performance that could significantly affect the link.
    I always spend a bit of time with a VNA to make sure the VSWR of my helicals is as low as I can get them.

    I’ve experimented with connecting one Helical to two SMA ports on my HDZero goggles, and up to a certain point it worked great to a certain point then the performance seemed to rapidly dropped off!
    I think it’s because it’s splitting total signal power which mainly affects performance when signal is weak… (We gotta ask Hugo)

But you would have to upgrade your goggles to the goggles 2 or goggles integra. I have the Goggles 2 with my Avata. Which the avata is still using occusync 3 but it gets great reception. I might make an updated gopro setting video now that the hero 11 and 12 are out. But ya sometimes auto or else usually 1/120th shutter, and just locking it and the ISO down low and deal with the river portion being too dark so the nice snowy footage won't be blown out. Backlit clouds make it tough, on a blue sky sunny day its much easier to find the right setting to lock it to. But also on a sunny day auto works ok as well and doesn't shift around as much. ISO as low as possible is pretty key, I won't go above 200 on my 11 mini.

    Hi FalconRad. Great video once again! I have a question if you could find the time to answer. I'm also interested in using big lipo packs for long range but most of the batteries of that size in my country come with a xt90 cable while my quad uses an xt60. • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If it spins up the motors and isn't descending when you lower the throttle, my first thought is to try lowering the D-term filter slider by 0.1 - 0.2. Did you use the same PID's in 4.3 as you did in 4.1? I think for 4.3 the PID numbers are calculated differently so the "tune" needs to be different, and I'm fairly sure the PID numbers should be lower in 4.3 than in 4.1. So you could also try lowering the PID master slider by one or two notches, that also might help. I have been thinking about making new videos for betaflight 4.4/4.5 settings for all of my different frames. It's not very good weather this time of year right now, once we start getting less rain I'll be able to do tuning videos more easily.

    Beautiful… so amazing… Q: Since most LR FPV is gentle flying, do you see an advantage over a 10,000mAh LiIon pack like the Dark Lithium packs? Those seem to be the best 7” battery out there…

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The disadvantage is the weight, it fly's poorly as far as agility goes. But yes you don't need to be agile to get good long range footage. Compared to a 5000mAh, the 10000mah on a 7" only gets about 40 or 50% more range since it's starting to push the limits of efficiency VS prop loading. I find that almost every flight I do I can make it with 6s2p 18650 packs with a total mAh of 5600. They'll get me 9 or 10 km out (and back of course) if I wanted. I rarely use my 10,000mAh pack, I save it for when I want to be able to reposition and try at several different shots on the GoPro while up a mountain, it gives me several extra minutes to redo a couple of shots multiple times.

I tweaked BLHeli_32 for max efficiency and can fly about 30minutes on 7” props. My frame (AOS7ULR) can fit 7.5” props but the clearance is only 1/8” per side of the battery so I don’t risk it…

      The Genfan 7535 are what I use. They seem to work quite well, minimal vibrations. I think the HQ's are fairly similar as well. You do need a slightly bigger motor to spin the 7.5" prop well. I'd recommend a 2808, 2810 or 3008

    Do you think a 3d printed frame can ever compete with a traditional frame? How much less efficient do you think it is?
    I’m just so interested as with a 3d printer you can endlessly customise.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not about efficiency, it's about the rigidity of the materials. It's tough for a 3D printed material to compare to carbon fiber plate. It would need to be printing with a very strong and very stiff material which is extremely durable. Anything less than carbon fiber for big frames and it's just way to much vibrations for the flight controller and motors to handle.

      This build has my old brainfpv gps on it. The gps still works great. But if you're looking to buy a new one go for an M10 gps the performance is noticeably better between an M8 and M10 gps.

    Hi Falconrad thanks again for another amazing upload, but may I ask for some of you help or maybe someone in the comments can help, what I am trying to do is, for example in the North York Moors National Park here in the UK , lots of people get lost and need help to find their way back to safety, so my idea is to make 1 of Falconrads long range FPV drones use it to go and find these people, and then be able to drop of to them a small radio, so what I am asking is can I some how fit and operate a 9 gram servo to the drone being used in the video, so that I can then be able to drop off the radio to the people who need help, when I find them? and if so how do I do it, thanks for your kind help.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, cool idea. Yes that can be done. Both Inav and Betaflight have options to control servos as part of the firmware. I don't think it's hard to get a servo to operate with either one of them. Just search betaflight servo control or inav servo control. I'm sure you'll find a few videos talking about getting servo control setup. There is for sure space underneath on the frame to hold a small radio.

    How long did it take to get this level of confidence in your quad?

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When I build a new quad I'll just do a couple of test flights before going on to flights like this. I'd do one halfway out to start and fly the battery down to empty and write down the mAh used and ending voltage and then ready to go all out. For me I think it's more about confidence in the gear than the individual builds. I know what all the gear is capable of and feel comfortable expecting a certain result with minimal testing. Keep in mind I've built LOTS of long range quads and just know how to do it well so it's easy to avoid antenna reception issues, electrical interference etc.... I guess maybe it's confidence in my ability to assemble a quality build

      \If I'm flying for just fun then ya sure. But if I'm flying to get footage then the GoPro is what I'll use, it's just a big step up from the DJI 03 footage, at least in some lighting conditions.

    • @jermadjesty
      @jermadjesty 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that doesn't sound right - I've been out 4 miles on 800mw (haven't done the hack) - I'm running TRUERC antennas on quad and trueRC stubbies + the iflight crystal patch on my v1 googles.

      As the other reply mentioned, upgrading to TrueRC singularity antennas should help. But for good range the TrueRC X2air is really great for the goggles.

      As far as their life... the ones I have used, the highest c rated ones but only the smaller 650 ones, seem to not last as long either, think it's because they are pushing the cells to the limit, even regular lipos will last longer if not charged all the way to 4.2...
      May last longer if you only charge high volt to only 4.3 or something

      I made a flew an 8" RAD Li-ion, but I didn't really fly it very much, I still preferred the way my 7" was flying. I'm halfway through drawing up a 10" version of the Falcon RPM frame, but it's a lot of redesign since it doesn't just scale up like a typical X frame does.
