Geometric Mean Example problem similar triangle

- In this is yet another example of geometric mean with similar triangles where a right triangle with an altitude is split into three similar triangles. Thanks to math site I used with the applet that shows the translations to create the three similar triangles.
Doesn't it suck that so many students are coming online to get math help because our teachers/curriculum/school system is incompetent
I don't think it shows incompetence. I see this as a tool that is helping students understand mathematics better than any generation of humans before. The students under the age of 20 should be some of the best mathematicians of all time. Imagine what could have happened if Ramanujan had youtube when he lived in India. I think it opens up access to high levels of math for students around the world..... It is awesome, and I hope to live to see some of the fruits of this labor. Thanks for the comment.
I completely agree with all you've said! The internet (specifically places like TH-cam) are amazing resources for students, and I think it's great that we are lucky enough to have such things available to us. The point that I was trying to make was that it's a little sad to see so many people commenting that they weren't taught the concept(s) in a way they could understand in the first place. I realize now that my first statement was a bit general; sorry if there was confusion. But know I truly appreciate videos like this, thank you for posting them.

My teacher just writes down on the board what he sees on the paper he's basing his lesson from, and just reads what he wrote without further explanation. ::((
They changed the curriculum to supposedly help the kids, but nobody is better. The teachers are worst, and the kids are dumber

@Bryan Hernandez a job wont necessarily have you find geometric mean. But I am a big believer that forcing your brain to work through this and learning the math terminology that allows you communicate your ideas to other humans is what is important. The only education that is important is what you teach yourself. Forced education doesn't work. Although learning more math never hurt anyone. And skipping school does.
I've spent the last 4 days sitting in geometry class with no idea what the hell my teacher was talking about... watch a 10 minute video and I understand it completely.

you can also solve it using euclid’s second theorem, because it says that a square built on the height relative to the hypotenuse is equal to a rectangle that has for sides the projection of the 2 sides on the hypotenuse, so you find x immediately by building the rectangle and extracting the square root, then you just do pythagorean theorem and you’re fine

By geometry mean theorem you can directly reach to equation x square= 12*5, rest all we can solve with this value.
When you find the height of the triangle, then you can calculate the area of that triangle. Please go forward and use Heron's farmula to recheck that all calculations are up to the mark. This has to be done at 8th standard world over.

Look up videos. How to simplify radicals. Or how to simplify square roots. Both will probably give you pretty good videos on how to do it. I have one. It is a tough concept. Usually takes me 3 days to get everyone in my class on board with how to do it.

How do we know that the triangles are similar? Is it stated in the problem?
Angle angle similarly. I didn't go through the proof. There is a right angle and each of the triangles share the bottom left angle. I thought about putting that in there, but try to keep my bids under 12 minutes

I don't know if u already answered this question or not, but how do yo check to make sure you got the right answer?
What I like to do is look at the triangle. Most in your textbooks are drawn to scale. Is the largest angle across from the largest side? In this video we are dealing with right triangles. You could use Pythagorean theorem to check you answer. I don't think I have had that question. Sorry it took 3 days to answer. But that is what I do. I mainly use triangle inequality theorem to check and the fact that I have literally solved thousands of triangles:)

Not in this case. In order for it to be a 30 - 60 - 90 triangle, the sides have to be in the relationship of x, x*sqrt(3), and 2x. non of the three have this relationship. Thanks for the question though. I had to watch the video again to make sure that wasn't the case. Those special triangles sometimes sneak up on us:)

The sqrt(320) is either 8sqrt(5) if you simplify the root. Or approximately 17.889

I have a question, I was looking for like other geometric means things and in my textbook, it says find the geometric mean of 9 and 25 and I know how to do that. But the problem is that’s just the thing u need to learn and my teacher will be using it in the test but in a problem. My question is, why do we need to know how to find two numbers’ geometric mean
That is a tough question for me because I just teach this stuff, I often do not get to see the application of it in the world. I do know I have used it when finding the missing number between two numbers in a geometric sequence, and geometric sequences occur any time there is a interest applied to a loan or savings account. Any time there is exponential growth. Geo-metry literally means "Earth study" so geometric mean is just another term to add to your vocabulary if you need it to describe something on our planet to someone else. Numbers themselves are just adjectives describing a noun (5 fish, 6 pigs, …) so I just like the fact that learning it has just increased my vocabulary to describe the world. I know that is a crappy answer, and maybe someone out there will read this and give you a better one... but for now that is about all I can answer. If I have time I will do some research on it and get back to you. Thanks for the question. It has my mind working!

Great question. I did not prove that the three triangles are similar. It is a really great proof using the Angle angle similarity theorem. If you prove any two corresponding angles equal in a triangle, then you can say that the two triangles are similar. Look for angles shared between triangles and the right angles. This proves the triangles similar and angles congruent.

Mon Bon look up videos on how to simplify radicals. Here when you factor out 60 to its prime factors 5 and 3 are factors that do not make a perfect square.... so 15 stays in the radical.

I think you mean when I found x and ended up with 2root15 as my final answer. This would be tough to explain in a couple of comments. Look up a video on simplifying radicals. Math BFF put out a good one. I have view on my channel. Get comfortable with simplifying radicals. Your progress in Trigonometry will hinge on that skill.

you multiplied the 3 and 15 why?
At 5:35. The 5 and the 3 did not pair up, so they have to stay under the radical. Watch a couple of videos on simplifying radicals. I have some and there is a blogger called mathbff who puts out some pretty good content.
