It's when you arrive and not can show a way of exit within your visa period that they will ask you how you are planning to leave and if you can sustain yourself during your stay. I've been to Thailand many times and always booked a return ticket from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Bangkok and never once was asked about this.

well, how many time passport control queue usually takes?
It s depends on the amount of people in the queue at that time..however it is not more than 15 minutes max.
