  • With such promise in the one lap event a junior runner, was Usain Bolt capable of breaking the 400m world record? Could he have held all three individual sprint WRs simultaneously?
    This video was created as a fan of running and Usain Bolt.

    Adding an event definitely would have stretched him thin. It's an interesting what if but I have to imagine he would have done it if he thought he could. 400 meter training is very different.

    • @TheRunnersOdyssey
      @TheRunnersOdyssey  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Agreed. Hard training - I was an 800 guy. I don't think there's any way he could have ran all three events at once. But if he switched over and only focused on the 400m after his 100&200 WRs, I think he could have that WR too.

      @@TheRunnersOdysseyIt's different but not vastly imo. You're still doing plenty of speed endurance with 200m training.
      I think for him to break it he'd have to strategically run the race sparingly and not all the time. Actually running the 4x4 wouldve been good because it's after the individual races and he could've actually got experience

    I met him awhile back and asked him the question based on another youtube video on the topic. I asked if after retiring from the 100 and 200 he'd be able to continue by doing the slower 400. He said nah the training for the 400 is more intense cause he'd need not only speed but the endurance. He said he was satisfied with what he accomplished and wasnt interested in the 400 at all.

    42.75 if he quit the 100/200 after winning everything and focused solely on the 400. That's about what his 100 and 200m WR performance scores roughly equal in the 400m. That 15yo kid with terrible form, bad scoliosis and no tactics running 45.3 in the rain had an almost unfathomable potential in the 400m.

    • @TheRunnersOdyssey
      @TheRunnersOdyssey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well said. That's where I put his time too. About 42.8. This may have even been his best event and we don't know it. But the 400 doesn't come with as much glamour.

    Bolt ran a 43.58 relay leg in March of 2010. Out of season, not an event he trains for... I would like to have seen him try. Winning Olympic gold in all 3 sprint events is more impressive than winning the 100-200 3 times, in my opinion but is body, his choice.

    I think Bolt did the right thing, if just say hypothetically he would have focused on the 400, instead of continuing to just focus on the 100 and 200, he might not have as many Medals as he has today. Plus, if you look at the entire history of Athletics in Track, most of the best Sprinters/Track stars in history only excelled in 1 to 2 events, Bolt found his 2 events, and those events were the 100 and 200. Even the great Michael Johnson was a 2 event specialist (The 200 and 400) but Johnson's 100M times were just pedestrian (His career best 100M time was 10.09). I think Bolt was built for 100, 200, and 300, (300 being his max) and anything beyond 300, was hit or miss lol. On a side note, I bet if the 300M was an official Olympic and World Championship event, Bolt would probably also hold the World Record in the 300M just like the 100 and 200. It took Michael Johnson like 6 or 7 attempts to finally break the 31 second barrier in the 300M, and Bolt broke the 31 second barrier in just 1 attempt lol.

    • @TheRunnersOdyssey

      For sure, I think he would have had less medals if he switched to the 400, and he would have had to sacrifice the 100 and maybe 200. But what's more impressive: 8 olympic gold medals, or 3 individual WRs in the 100, 200, and 400?

    • @justinexplainseverything1554
      @justinexplainseverything1554 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@TheRunnersOdyssey That's a great question, which is more impressive, winning 8 Olympic Gold Medals, or owning 3 World Records in 3 different individual events. For me, it's tough, because I don't just look at those 8 Olympic Golds, I look at all of his Gold Medals across all major international competitions, and Bolt won a Record 23 Gold Medals across all major competitions, not just his 8 Golds at the Olympics. But, if we are just talking Golds versus having 3 World Records in the 100, 200, and 400, I honestly am taking all his Golds and total Medals over the 100, 200, and 400. Even Bolt himself said numerous times, that he values his Gold Medals over any of his World Records, and he said the reason for that is, Records come and go, but you can never take away his Medals. Prime example, Jesse Owens, he no longer holds any World Records, but nobody will ever forget his 4 Gold Medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

    Bolt's first 100m of his WR 200 were also faster than his 100 record time if memory serves. The relation between the two distances would make a great video, but if not the fact we saw such performance continues to be unbelievable.
