I'm going on 82 years of age, and I've never heard anyone play the "Licorice Stick" like Pete Fountain. His rifs' on the clarinet were magical and he always had the crowd in the palm of his hand. I consider myself lucky to have listened to him and Al Hirt in my lifetime. Joe Cimino
A very good clarinetist, I’ve been listening to Pete nearly all my life! I never get tired of his New Orleans music! Would like to learn a few of his solos! He and Benny G. are among my favs, to name just a few!
I've seen both--two flavors of absolute clarinet perfection. Because my Dad dragged me in the living room when I was 8 years-old to see Pete Fountain solo during his brief stint with Lawrence Welk, that is the reason I play clarinet today.
I saw Pete play live at his club in New Orleans just about a month after this. Sat about 15 feet away, what a wonderful experience for this former clarinet player.
A true legend, I never tire hearing him play. He is now entertaining all my relatives and friends who have gone before me. R.I.P Pete Fountain. May the reed be with you.
I love the musical foundation laid by the orchestra in accompanying Pete. This would have been 1978, the year Maestro Fiedler died - the gold decor commemorated his 50th year as conductor of the Pops. Great concert from what I can see.
I discovered Pete on Johnny Carson series of DVD's last year. I think he was just the most amazing musician ever! Rest in Peace sir! There will never be another one like him!
I saw him at his club around this time. I can remember being in the reception area and we could hear him warming up before the show. I played also, but only enough to really appreciate his music!
I used to listen to the Boston Pops every Sunday on the radio. I recorded this on cassette during that broadcast and wore the tape out replaying Basin Street and Closer Walk. Thanks for the share.
Excelente clarinetista para mi modesta opinión el mejor de todos los tiempos excelentes arreglos New Orleans le debe un homenaje ¡ excelente músico!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You could not beat the fat, warm sound he got on the crystal mouthpiece; the exciting dixieland style, the simplicity, like Louis. Pete was my favorite.
I believe he also had a slightly larger bore than typical. I saw him @ his place in the Hilton, and he was so good it was preternatural---just another night for the great Pete Fountain.
Pete was my idol, as he could play swing, dixieland, pop, all things well. I just wish the audio here was tuned to feature him instead of overpower his softer spots.
14:48 Considering that this was an analog broadcast, it's a pretty good recording. Looks like Harry Ellis Dickson is conducting, Fiedler must have been ill.
Different, but easily as good or better. I saw Benny G live at Massey Hall in the 70s and he was not as good as PF; BG squeaked a lot and looked at his clarinet as if it was the horn's fault.... When it's live there is no "do over".

Pete's relaxed, fluid improvising was way ahead of anything Goodman could do - there was always a certain stiffness about Goodman's playing. Will grant you De Franco - Buddy was in a class of his own and could hold his own in any company, any style...
All music by memory. Eyes closed. Unbelievable!

Well said Joe - I agree
@@ssnoc His tone and technique are beyond compare. I'm a Benny Goodman fan and I think these are two of the best in the business...
One of a kind lover of music and human being. Thanks.

Like minded, loved Pete Fountain.

AND Benny Goodman!
My dad loved Pete Fountain and Al Hirt. I miss him a lot.

He's also giving (in spirit) ideas and techniques to current musicians. 👍

Ray Fairley .....Delightful I wish I been there A real treat Bravo

I grew up with guys like Pete Fountain & Artie Shaw back in the great 70’s @ 80’s 😂
I saw him at his club around this time. I can remember being in the reception area and we could hear him warming up before the show. I played also, but only enough to really appreciate his music!
What talent - this guy was in a class all by himself 👏👏👍
I grew up with him and now her living 50 miles south of New Orleans there’s none finer than these guys
What a great post. Sad to learn that Pete Fountain has passed away. This is a fitting tribute. RiP.
I remember watching this then and am delighted that it has been now shown. A great group of New Orlean's musicians. Thanks

There was NOBODY who could make that ultra-controlled, huge fat sound on that big-bore Leblanc like the one and only Pete Fountain.
Pete definitely was the best of the best!
Way on top! Thank you, Pete! Rest in peace, sir.
Thanks muchly for the post. I've been trying to hear this again after watching when aired. R I P Pete and Thanks for the music !
New Orleans Cool.....deep in my soul. Check out Pete's "Candy Clarinet" Christmas album on how to do Christmas!

Inhave the same model clarinet, and a OBrien crystal mouthpiece, but it was Pete g3tting alll the tone of them.

Clarinet by LeBlanc: note the gold-plated keys on the special 'Pete Fountain' model...

I think it was,, PETE FOUNTAIN.. featuring the Boston POPs
Pete Fountain, Buddy Wright, and Peter Hadcock on the same stage. Holy $hi+!! 😮🎶
lindo
Even with the shitty quality recording its worth listening to and I'm an avid audiophile
Could someone please upload this Pete Fountain Boston Pops Concert in a higher resolution or HD !

Who is better.? Benny Goodman or Pete Fountain?
Seen both, no contest. No, literally, no contest. They were both as close to perfect as you could get. Music is not a contest.
what music was used in the front and close of the opening animation used?
The overture to "Porgy and Bess" by George Gershwin.
@@eblackadder3 thanks!
Great work from Pete and his combo. Would have been better without the orchestra...
Just should have shut the "POPS" down.... and let PETE Play....
No where near as good as the great Benny Good man. Buddy De Franco.

Pf is new orleans..! Yes indeed!
