Dude, you HAVE to listen to the unedited versions of the 1st and 3rd songs. The singer in those is Howard Jones and his album version of those vocals is so much better. Those videos don't do his voice justice. He has one of the best voices in metal IMO, but these edited versions don't show it. Jessie (the white guy) is the singer on the second video. He's phenomenal also.

I believe Howard Jones (lead singer of Killswitch Engage) was classically trained as well. He was actually an opera singer before he joined the band. That's why he sounds so good. ☺️

I say here here to that, we need people that can accurately describe the techniques and tricks to keep from shattering your vocals, as an instrumentalist that has a passion for voices, I've been trying for years to do screams and melodic growls, and only recently did I finally find the ways that work for me, but they're unorthodox as all hell
Screaming and growling is just like singing in the sense that all of them should come out from your diaphragm and not your throat

They were famous before Howard, they basically are one of the very first and most influential metalcore bands, and have been since like 99 into 00.
I've loved Killswitch from their original conception, but Howard brought so much more depth to their songwriting. Very talented band. Thank you for reacting.

still love this song and listen to it still today, I remember their song My Curse being on guitar hero as well when I was in middle school, I’d come home and play it with my friends who lived in the apartments where I lived, I’m 29 now damn, memories 😔 this song is on resident evil, love those movies.
Probably one of the best bands to see live! Everytime I see them they put on a great show with tons of energy! Definitely a band you would want to see!

I'm sure I'm way late, but the first and last song was Howard Jones (my personal favorite), and the middle sing was Jesse (still amazing). Jesse was the original singer, but left early on. Howard helped the band get as big as they are today, but left a few years ago, and Jesse actually came back. I HIGHLY recommend Signal Fire, as it features both.
You can scream like that without damaging your voice but you have to train for it. It's a false vocal fold scream it's hard to learn how to do in a sustainable way
Some metal vocalists do conserve their voice. I don't, but then I don't tour, and I believe that is the biggest difference. BTW, Titan Up!!!
Honestly just the fact you closed your eyes and attempted to vibe with the music is a blessing. We get everyone at rock shows but i love seeing people lean into it who have never touched it before. Appreciate you brother, love the vid.

It was so much fun watching you vibe out to these songs!! Howard Jones' voice (the singer in the first and last song) sings right to your soul! Jesse (Current and original singer) is awesome too! Their new stuff is awesome, and this older stuff is as well but the official videos aren't the album version of the songs and you miss out on alot of Howard's incredible screams! I know this is an old video but you should check out their new song The Signal Fire. Both singers sing together on that track and knowing the bands history, it is truly an awe inspiring sight! Love the videos man! \m/
That was Howard singing in "My Curse" and "End Of Heartache". Jesse was the singer for "In Due Time". Jesse was the original singer until he left the band for a while and Howard took over for a few albums. The song "In Due Time" is when Jesse came back to the band after Howard left. They actually did a song with both vocalists called "Signal Fire". It's a great song. KSE is a great band, who has has two great vocalists in their bands existence.
God i miss Howard Jones. Jesse Leach is awesome but those years with Howard at the helm were magical and seeing them live, was absolutely awe inspiring. One of the few bands I ever saw were I was just awestruck and man, he could lead a show

I agree with you, I am mesmerized of how these men can go from roaring and just beautiful vocals. I love Killswitch Engage. They got me through some of my life issues and tragedies. Most recent is losing my ride or die, best friend, my husband of 29yrs due to COVID Jan2021."End of Broken Heart" I played over and over weeping for awhile to get through my grieving. Every time they come through Phoenix,Az I go to see them live. Howard Jones is my favorite but I still like Jessie Leach. I'm glad you enjoyed this metal group. Another one is Skipknot, Corey Taylor has sick vocals would recommend them too

Jessie Leach was their original vocalist. He left the band and was replaced by Howard Jones, who was with them for a long time. He then left the band to get treatment for alcoholism and Jessie Leach came back. Howard is doing better now and is with another band called Light the Torch. There was no falling out with Killswitch either. He's performed live with them and Jessie, and is doing guest vocals on some songs for their new album that comes out this fall.

The raspy voice is called metal screaming and it requires months to learn and years to master. I can currently do it.

I've come across interviews with singers who do both clean singing and growling and say that growling is less stressful. It focuses on a different part of the throat.
I only did some backup screams in my old band, just a few seconds which won't kill your voice. The singer through surprised me when we recorded a demo; I thought he was really belting it out but with the headphones on in a quiet studio, he was making the effect at regular speaking volume. Unreal, but true.
I like both howard and Jesse, also the songs you picked were good selections. I love Howard’s clean vocals but Jessie kills it when it comes to unclean vocals ( screams and growls ) and there’s actually a video where Jesse and Howard performed together live on stage . It looked epic, jealous of the people that got to see that performance because it was sooo good.

How about a 3 piece no biscuit of Alter Bridge?! My suggestions are Blackbird live in Amsterdam, Fortress (studio) and Words Darker than their Wings live at the Royal Albert Hall! If you want incredible vocals and amazing guitar playing and song writing this is DEFINITELY the band to check out!

The singer that does the deeper more baritone vocals is Howard, while the one that does more screaming and has a higher pitch is Jessy.
10:40 There's a lot of technique that goes into metal vocals. If you're doing it properly, you're not doing any damage at all to your voice. However, if you just straight up scream with no technique, you're going to destroy your vocal cords

Sadly the lead singer left in 2012 because he officially said he was dealing with type 2 diabetes, and touring made it worse later he came out and admitted that he was also dealing with anxiety and depression and as they got more exposure from fame that it also got worse, sad 😥
I've been following this band since the like mid-90s along with nonpoint corn sevendust and a lot of other great bands with African-Americans singers

Yeah most styles of metal vocals are false chord(vocal chords you don't use in regular speech and singing) or techniques that are referred to as "tunnel throat" or "gutteral" basically a much more advanced mix of false chord and throat shape in order to create more aggressive and versatile sounds. So typically they don't conflict with your regular voice in speaking and singing.

I'm from maine it's fairly close to mass. Killswitch is super fun live. They do the wall of death or at least they used to where they'd have the crowd split apart right down the middle and then right as a song hits a certain way they have both sides charge each other. Some of the funnest shit I've ever been a part of at a show. it's cool seeing people react to some more obscure bands and songs

My fiance is a metal vocalist and it's something you have to work up to over time and then once you have your vocal tuned you are basically able to do it on command. Some days he will be heavier than others. But still bad ass. He gives even some of the professional metal screamers a run for their money.
I’m from western Massachusetts too! I’m from Chicopee though a couple towns over from Westfield. I’m the same way with reading I get super sleepy when reading a book but can read articles all day. I thought I was the only one with that.
I have seen Slipknot more than 10 times and every single time I saw them at some point I look at my friend and say how does Corey sing like that every night for the whole set? Vision of disorder is just as insane.
They don't walk around quiet all day, but there is very specific warm up exercises they do to protect their voice.

They don't use their throats to do the screaming. They either use their False Chords or Fry Screams to do guttural vocals. Jesse uses False Chords if I'm not mistaken. The longer you practice once you learned the technique the longer you can scream. It doesn't damage your throat if you're using one of these techniques. Everybody can learn it, just takes some dedication and time.

The singers were Howard Jones then Jesse Leach, and then Howard again. Jesse was the original on the first two albums and then Howard came for the third, forth, and fifth albums, and then Jesse came back for albums 6, 7, and 8... so far

Music is such a universal love language. and even though in its purity it has no boundaries in todays societal constructs people divide into groups based on race, gender and creed sexuality etc. which is sad bcuz it truly doesn't matter who you are or what you are or your beliefs. its for anybody that's there to enjoy it.
with that said, its nice to see a black gentlemen enjoying this music and demonstrates that this music isn't designed for someone based on their race. just like rap isn't just for one race either.

I had that same thing with reading when I was young, but later in life I realized that, the stuff I was reading when I was young, wasn't things I was interested in. so when I read,I reads graphic novels, like comics, trade paperbacks and manga. it might help you get a lil more into reading.
