It is not dramatic or exaggerated, for me, it is what you see in people's reactions in everyday life. And it's even better when the movie wants it and shows it. Call Me by Your Name...the scene where he’s driving back with his mother after he calls her to come and get him. When he breaks down after she caresses his head...it hit me in the gut...I had never seen something so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
YES! That was probably the single most authentic expression of emotion with no words I’ve ever seen. For me it was more because a similar thing occurred with my own mother and me, not entirely unrelated. I had a fight with my best friend in HS, and came home and joined my mother by the pool/outdoor fireplace. She said she could tell I was upset, implored me to talk but I couldn’t; turns out I was actually in love with my friend and couldn’t share any details because I would “out” myself. Without speaking, she moved next to me, took my hand and just held it. That triggered the waterworks, as i stared into the fire, just like the scene described AND the closing scene! CMBYN was a powerful movie for some of us gay boys.

The first time I recognized him was in The King. What an amazing actor. When the movie was over, I told my son “pay attention to that guy, he’s gonna be a superstar”. That ending of call me by your name shocked me so bad that I couldn't even cry while watching it. Like damn bro, I felt so empty at that time. It's devastating. I remember crying after I collected myself and that was 4 days after I watched the movie.
We don't talk enough about what a stellar job he did nailing a British accent for The King. So many actors who have come before him have failed and failed miserably.
