Voiceplay are just so talented :) The amount of work that goes into their productions is astounding. I ll suggest "Hoist the colours", "The Dragonborn comes", "My mother told me" and "Hide and Seek" but you cannot go wrong by picking anything with Voiceplay or Geoff Castellucci as he has done some solo ones like "Sixteen tonnes" and "Ghost riders in the sky". It is astounding how talented they are.
The most fun is hearing someone to react to the Voiceplay experience for the very first time. Thanx for making my day! I listen to other acapella groups, but for me, Voiceplay is the bomb. They have no label, no manager, so they have complete creative control. This also means that they don't get the publicity that some others do. Usually whoever does the arrangement does everything else. Set design, costume and makeup choice, production, editing, the whole schmear. Eli Jacobson, the rock tenor has been handling their lighting and special effects for a few years. They used to tour all the time, they've sung all over the world. When the pandemic shut everything down, they concentrated on studio work. Voiceplay suggestions: Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - mindblowing I Can't Make You Love Me - heartbreaking Carry On Wayward Son - maybe better than the original Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay!!
J None (between Geoff (bass) and Eli ( rock tenor) was a member of VoicePlay until the US Navy recruited him for his vocal talents. He said he be back and when on leave he has come back and done some minis as well as the lead in Friends on the Other Side and this one here. Cesar (baritenot) is the newest of the members and he is between Eli and Layne (also known as vioLayne and is the beatboxer). Geoff did the arranging for this video. Layne and Geoff alternate between being responsible for producing the current video. Eli does computer backgrounds, green screens, lighting). You might enjoy some of my favorites: Tennessee Whiskey, Warriors, Dragonborn Comes Skyrim Queen in 5 Minutes and the ones Ilona Dever has put on her list: love those too.
Layne, the beatboxer is a classically trained violinist, 12 years. Geoff, the bass, rewrote the guitar solo at the end to be a violin solo. Eli, the bald guy, spent two years on the road with a rock band. J None, the second singer, was a member of the group but went into the Navy to sing. We expect him to come back to rejoin them. He does a lot of stuff with them still. Caesar is the newest member and has a voice that is outstanding. The did a cover of Dream On by Aerosmith that you need to watch. Great cover. And Warriors is another great one they did. Great review. This rabbit hole is a lot of fun.
4 that you need to check out by Voiceplay "Dream On", "The Halo Theme", "Just Sing", "Oogie Boogie Song", and also Geoff's (the bass singer) independent songs
Remember at that place in Metallica's version, they did a guitar solo. Geoff had originally planned for Layne to do that but at the last had him do the solo with his violin. You might also enjoy In the Hall of the Mountain King that they did in Sept. It's one of those numbers that should get them nominated for something.
Welcome to the best rabbit hole in a cappella. No a cappella group could ever do Metalli..........never mind. VoicePlay. They are amazing!! Their ranges are astonishing. I mean, ALL of them can sing from bari/bass to tenor. Try Dream On or Dragonborn next.
Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole. Geoff (pronounced Jeff), the bass singer, did this arrangement. He is a rabbit hole in himself. He has a solo channel where you can really hear his incredible range (he has about a 5 octave range). The beatboxer, Layne, also does some of the arrangements. They usually trade off. Layne was playing the violin which earned him the nickname VioLayne. I can't wait to see you discover more of them!
I'll just scootch over a bit to make a little more room in the rabbit hole....welcome! We're friendly here and we have carrots! (inside joke for Voiceplay fans). Seriously, this hole is so deep there's plenty of room, and plenty of variety. Besides rock - Carry On Wayward Son and Dream On are both stunning - they done everything from Broadway to Disney to video game themes to country to pop and even k-pop (Their cover of BTS's Butter is great and the video is a blast to watch), and even more. One of the things I love about Voiceplay is they have a great sense of humor and are not afraid to be ridiculous while singing beautifully. See their short of the Chili's Baby Back Rib jingle as exhibit A.
Voiceplay RULE at rock and metal covers - SO glad you've checked them out! Of course now you have to hear their versions of (among others) 'Dream On' by Aerosmith, 'Carry On My Wayward Son' by Kansas... and, knowing you're also a gamer, they've also done a cover of the 'Halo' theme tune that will BLOW YOUR MIND (it's also a tribute to a friend of theirs who passed, so it's worth watching the whole video to the end to see that.) There's pretty much nothing they can't do - they always bring the theatrics and high production values to their work (which they do the bulk of themselves, from vocal arrangements, to the sound and video editing, to costumes and make-up, to lighting.)
Earlier today I recorded reactions to their Skyrim song, Panic at the Dico medley and We Don't Talk About Bruno. Ive got Wayward Son bookmarked. Decided to go outside of where people might expect first and did that to see a range of styles.
@@TheEclecticBeard please put Voice Plays cover of Dream On... originally by Aerosmith. Please put this high on your list. These guys are known as The Theater Kids of a capella. They do a lot of theatrical work & stop at nothing to put on an amazing show. One thing to remember is to never stop any of their videos until after the credits roll. A lot of times they pause for affect to give a special something at the end. You have a new subscriber ❤️
I just subscribed yesterday for your Home Free reaction, and now you're doing VoicePlay too? Hot diggety, I am here for the trips down both those rabbit holes. They are both fantastic, amazing groups. I'd love to see what you think of VoicePlay's cover of _Dream On_ (Aerosmith).
Voiceplay is my current favorite. They take songs we thought we knew and give us entirely new ways to appreciate them. Thanks for the terrific reaction.
The bass, Geoff Castelucci has his own channel as well. He uses instruments. Welcome to the rabbit hole. I fell in it in April and never looked back. I'm now on the patreons of Vioplay, Geoff and Pattycake Productions. Pattycake is owned by Layne (percussion/Baritone) and former member Tony Wakim. They have a ton of fantastic Disney themed original videos. My favorites are The Villains Haunted Mansion and The Villains Lair series. Hey. Where else can you get the Disney villains together in one room? Live not animated.
This is what VoicePlay does, They take a song, look at every cover they can find then see what hasn't been done before, then do it, putitng their own spin on it, whilst staying true to the original. Yes it's a violin, same thing as a fiddle. This is only the seond time they've used it, normally they are totally acapella.
Thank you for recognizing what geoff was doing with his bass. I've seen reactors comment his bass is unnecessary but I always felt, like you said, his bass beautifully evens out the whole thing.
One bit of advice with a capella. Always rewind a few seconds so you don't miss something you paused on. And with VoicePlay specifically, two things to note: 1.) Always play at least till the patron list, 2.) Unless the captions are auto generated, always have them on.
The more you listen to this version, the more you hear subtle nods to the original track - vocal inflections of James, rhythms, you name it! Great reaction sir! If you like rabbit holes, you should check out 'If Only' by Hiss, Alexinho, Colaps and River' ;)
Great reaction! So glad you gave VoicePlay a chance. They've got such a wide variety of songs and I'm looking forward to seeing you react to more from them. It's a pretty amazing rabbit hole! 😂
I’m glad you’ve checked this out! There’s lots more by these guys to enjoy, and I see someone already told you about Geoff’s solo channel AND The Bass Gang, a bunch of young bass singers (who, like Geoff, have crazy range, so they can also sing other parts) who are starting to get a little notice-not as much as they deserve. Looking forward to more reactions from you! One request: when you stop the video to comment, could you back up a couple bars before restarting? Sometimes it’s easy to miss things because you can stop right at a bad spot. Thanks!
Loved your reaction and am now a new subscriber - thanks! Lots of great info and suggestions in the comments from the rest of the "Voice Players" (fans of Voice Play) but if you liked Layne's violin playing you would love Voice Play's cover of "Warriors" which features Layne beatboxing while shredding the violin and J. None (black gentleman with soulful voice here) also plays a little violin in that cover.
Loved your reaction. And the concepts you expressed throughout it find me in total agreement. 🙂 And when I read you already recorded some more reactions to them, as well as Home Free (BTW, they're good friends since both groups participated to a show called "Sing Off", and have a number of collaborations in one way or another... And Geoff, Voiceplay's bass, credited Tim Foust, Home Free's bass, for helping him with some techniques), well, how could I not subscribe? Enjoy their rabbit holes... And don't forget to check Geoff Castellucci own channel, where he does super crazy stuff under the label of "Low bass covers", but he actually does EVERYTHING there... He "clones" himself in 4 or 5 of him, sings ALL the parts beautifully harmonising with himself, acts all the characters (often with different outfits and makeups), and well.. I love it. 😁 Try his cover of, for example, "Ain't no sunshine", or "Ghost raiders in the sky", or "Shenandoah", or "House of the rising sun", or the two that, for different reasons, are currently my favourites of his, "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" ad his latest, "Till then". 🙂 See you next time! 🙂
You should also check out Geoff Castellucci (pronounced Jeff) the base singer's solo channel I love his take on SIXTEEN TONS and AIN'T NO SUNSHINE. Geoff has an amazing range to his voice he can sing very low and then go up in the rafters.
From what you said about your own views, I think I can safely say you’ll find more VoicePlay covers that push all the right buttons. Their usual arrangers are Geoff (bass) and Layne (beatbox/violin), but Eli (tenor that solo’s first) has done a few too. Geoff has flat out said that if they can’t find something new to bring to the song, they don’t do it. This is why you won’t find them covering Bohemian Rhapsody. Everyone and their cousin already has. Welcome to this particular rabbit hole; it ate a full weekend for me when I first found found them. 😊 I think you’d like their cover of Dream On. And probably Tennessee Whiskey. Oh, and “violin” and “fiddle” are the same thing. So you were right either way. 😉
Geoff is the bass. His range is mind-blowing. A couple great ones are "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and Hoist the Colours" The first black gentleman that sang was J. None.
Terrific thoughtful reaction. I’m so glad that you defined what a good cover should do. They say that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”, but it doesn’t lend itself to artistic expression. (And this is art!) They are covering the song, not the original artist. Not everyone sees the distinction. I really liked your metal meets Motown comment. I have always loved that soul sound that J has. And yes, the violin (electric according to others who know- the soundbox is smaller since it doesn’t need that resonance) adds another voice. You also got to see Layne as a triple threat as he sang, beatboxed, and played the violin all in one song. Check out the cover of Warriors. That’s where VioLayne got his name as he plays throughout the piece and J also does some violin work. I missed the whole metal era and that style doesn’t really appeal to me. But I always check out the original unless I am pretty familiar with the original. I may not like metal, but it is an amazing song, and there is no question that they are talented. After you’ve viewed the two groups for a while, you might want to check out Survivor which features both Home Free and Voiceplay although they were videoed separately and then mixed together for the piece. It’s called Zombies versus Hillbillies and really emphasizes the niche that each of them takes: Theatrical versus Country. It is not one of my favorite pieces, as I don’t care for the female vocalist who was added just so they could appear on the Sing Off. She’s talented, but I just don’t think she blends well. But the piece is a lot of fun. Subbing to see you fall down the rabbit hole. Lots of good recommendations already, and I would like to add Tennessee Whiskey to that. If you like harmony, and you like riffs and runs, that’s a really good piece.
The Rabbit Hole is fun and deep! Welcome! Bring your spelunking gear with your flashlight because the bass has his own channel where he goes subterranean! 😂
@@TheEclecticBeard Because I am a Tolkien fan, I love his cover of Misty Mountains. And yes they are all him. Another favorite lately has been Till Then was originally done by the Mills Brothers in 1944. Just for fun, his Way Down ( originally done by Elvis) is a lot of fun. One of my favorites that shows his versatility is his cover of Blackbird..
Geoff has one crazy range and i think Oogie Boogie is definitely one of the best to show that, they are all amazing but Geoff's range is unbelievable, well worth watching.
Can't add anything to the comments already made so, I'll just say welcome to the most fun and entertaining rabbit hole ever. Subscribed for more Geoff/VoicePlay! Loved the reaction! 🙂👍
His Name is Geoff Castellucci he has his own solo channel and does his own covers where he arranges them himself has he has done for this song but he also reads stories and poems
As other's have pointed out. . . . violin and fiddle are the same thing - the difference is how you play it. Now I believe Layne's is actually an electric violin.
Seconded! Also, if you'd like to hear them do something *very* different in style and tone but equally intricate and well put-together, check out their version of We Don't Talk About Bruno.
I'm so glad you found this as well. You really do like a good rabbit hole, dont you? Not the specific song I would have recommended first as it is the one and only time they have used the violin and it shocked us all. Just to help you out, from left to right Geoff (pronounsed Jeff), J. None (former regular member before joining the Navy), Eli ( pronounced El-ee), Caesar (replaced J.None but still amazing), Layne (Vocal percussionist extreme and apparently violinist). Glad you enjoyed it and this A-Capella rabbit hole you have jumped in feet first. Voiceplay are known as the theater kids but they also hit the epic rock hits, Home Free you know are the Country guys but branch out often, Pentatonix (or PTX) are more poppy but super experimental, then you have Voctave who tend to be more traditional but dang they have a wall of sound without a huge choir. I know you love harmony so I think you will enjoy Voctave and if you like Disney music, you will love them. Good luck on your journey.
Loved your reaction. You pretty much need to react to everything they have done. Warriors by imagine dragons is the only other cover where they use a violin. But please check out everything. Carry on wayward son, dream on, enemy, all of their medleys and themed covers for Christmas or Halloween are bonkers. I think you’ll really get a kick out of most things they do. Geoff Castellucci the bass also has his own solo channel and his covers are incredible as well. You should check out all of his stuff too.
Well.... I've recorded reactions to their Skyrim song, Panic at the Disco medley and We Don't Talk About Bruno. Just for an idea of the gamut they run.
You should also check out their other stuff, but also The Bass Gang and Van Canto - especially Van Canto's covers of Rebellion and Primo Victoria, both of which feature the original singers
❤️ you will also love Voice Plays cover songs..Carry On Wayward Son..Warriors , from Imagine Dragons..Dream On.., originally by Aerosmith. Voice Play knocks these out of the ball park. Please add these to your list.
You might be interested to know that J. None (the singer you singled out for his amazing vocals) was a member of VoicePlay and "resigned" to join the US Navy and is now part of their musical ensemble. Then they're placed in one of the musical groups and visit military bases all over the world to boost morale. th-cam.com/video/Q2ZktEyQspw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/cAxkyl9VP5s/w-d-xo.html
I think you're going to like VoicePlay, they agree with you on what a cover "is." When they get an idea they kick it around and think about how they might offer something new - because who ever originated it did it "their way" best, right? Why repeat that? What's the point? Then one of them claims it - typically Geoff (who arranged this one) or Layne (beatbox/vioLayne). Then they listen to every single cover they can find because - again - if their idea has been done, why do it again?. Only after they're confident that they can offer something respectful but new, do they go ahead and put together the arrangement. They think of each video as an art piece, and give it all of the respect and attention that that implies. Check out Queen in 5 minutes for a medley that will both make you laugh and that is a wonderful cruise through some all-time Queen favorites.
Hi first I love your channel been watching for ages.... Voiceplay have lots of great covers also check out Geoff Castellucci solo cover Keep on doing what your doing love your channel
Let me start off with I am a metalhead. The gentleman who Is the base Geoff castellucci is the person responsible for The arrangement. They have also Done covers of dream on and carry on wayward son. The best cover Of dream on and the only version of dream on I will now listen to is postmodern jukebox featuring Morgan James. What impresses me the most is the reverence They show the original Song. I have never wanted to know how a band feels about a cover so has done a song. FYI You do not use barbershop quartet when Talking about acapella groups. That No barber shop quartetI Received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Pentatonix just I have the presentation ceremony of their star on the holy wood walk of fame. I very much enjoyed your reaction.
Almost all of VoicePlay's arrangements are done by Geoff (posessor of the voice of the Devil, LOL) or Layne (vocal percussion and violin in this video). Geoff has said that you could take basically any song and change the instruments lines into vocals so that it will sound exactly like the original...but then WHY are you doing a cover of that song? People might as well just listen to the original. So, don't do a cover of any song unless you feel you can bring something new to it and make it your own, However, you also don't want to go too far off the deep end in the other direction, and change it so much that nobody can recognize the song, either.
Violin and fiddle are physically the same instrument; the difference has to do with how you play it. If you're playing Turkey in the Straw, it's called a fiddle. If you're playing the Prelude to the Partita #3 in E, it's a violin. And, apparently, if you're playing Metallica, it's VioLayne.
VP are a tad too theatrical for me generally, but they did a great job with this. Geoff is an undeniably top-tier arranger. As someone whose teenage self was outside the record store waiting for it to open on day of release to grab my copy of this album, I was worried about what they were going to do to to represent the solo (a cover of this song without the solo would be ridiculous), so I smiled wide when the violin was thrown in from stage left!! #GreatChoice #TellTheAcapellaPuristsToShush :) I'd love for you to treat yourself to a cheeky wee double reaction, first the original Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" (possibly best just use a lyrics vid / don't record the official video on OBS, to avoid copyright issues), then take a minute to stroke your beard wondering how the h3ll an a capella group could possibly do that.... *then* let Home Free's cover wash over you. If you're not impressed, I'll give you your money back myself!! ;)
@@TheEclecticBeard Ah, nae bother! Hopefully you found it suitably haunting. It's worth giving the original a listen (not asking for a reaction vid)- it's pretty striking itself. Mark Knopfler is in my all-time top5 guitarist list. Cheers for replying. :)

Yeah, plan on looking at his stuff as well
@@TheEclecticBeard Because I am a Tolkien fan, I love his cover of Misty Mountains. And yes they are all him. Another favorite lately has been Till Then was originally done by the Mills Brothers in 1944. Just for fun, his Way Down ( originally done by Elvis) is a lot of fun. One of my favorites that shows his versatility is his cover of Blackbird..
They also covered Dream on, carry on my wayward son and a few others. Welcome to the rabbit hole of Voiceplay
Great reaction to an amazingly awesome song.
Dude like your content you got a subscribe, voiceplay hit everything out the park they do just sooooo good
seriously, I want that deep voiced guy to just read stuff to me lol
His Name is Geoff Castellucci he has his own solo channel and does his own covers where he arranges them himself has he has done for this song but he also reads stories and poems
@@craftymissfit6007 ooh, thanks, I'll check that out
Welcome to the voiceplay rabbit hole.theyre definitely my favorite of the big 3 acapella groups.
Great reaction
Please react to more voiceplay
I recommend you voiceplay dream on Aerosmith cover please 🙏🙏🙏
If you like their cover of Metallica, check out their cover of Kate Bush, it's amazing, they do the best covers dude
So far I've recorded this, their Skyrim one, Panic at the Disco and We Don't Talk About Bruno and have 2 others bookmarked.
@@TheEclecticBeard can't wait!
@@TheEclecticBeard awesome 👍
Awesome reaction! Thank you!
As other's have pointed out. . . . violin and fiddle are the same thing - the difference is how you play it. Now I believe Layne's is actually an electric violin.
Welcome to the voiceplay rabbit hole... strap in and enjoy the ride!!!
Glad you found VoicePlay. You also found a new subscriber. Welcome to the rabbit hole!
Understand that VoicePlay are the theater kids of accopella, many of their covers sre in full costumes and staging.
Welcome to the rabbit hole...
Fantastic reaction 😊 I’ve subscribed to see more VoicePlay reactions please xx
Also check out Hoist the Colours by them. It's amazing, especially if you like pirate stuff 😁
Seconded! Also, if you'd like to hear them do something *very* different in style and tone but equally intricate and well put-together, check out their version of We Don't Talk About Bruno.
Voiceplay is amazing love them and check out the Bass voice singing also does solo work you might like too Geoff is so good too
Thank you for your great reaction
Not the only song....check out their version of Warriors
Welcome to the VP rabbit hole! Enjoy!!
These folks go through Basic Training just like all the other recruits and are fully combat-ready. Then they're placed in one of the musical groups and visit military bases all over the world to boost morale.

Nobody expects the VioLayne. Nobody!
Great to see you,re react to more accapella. I,ve been obsessed for years. You don,t really need anything else. lol
Great reaction!
Welcome to VioLayne's rabbit hole of WHAT!
Hi first I love your channel been watching for ages....
Voiceplay have lots of great covers also check out Geoff Castellucci solo cover
Keep on doing what your doing love your channel
I can recommend voiceplay hoist the colours.its really good
Let me start off with I am a metalhead.
You should check out Geoff on his own
Violin and fiddle are physically the same instrument; the difference has to do with how you play it. If you're playing Turkey in the Straw, it's called a fiddle. If you're playing the Prelude to the Partita #3 in E, it's a violin. And, apparently, if you're playing Metallica, it's VioLayne.
Violens and fiddles are the same thing. It just depends on how it is played.
#GreatChoice #TellTheAcapellaPuristsToShush :)
I'd love for you to treat yourself to a cheeky wee double reaction, first the original Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" (possibly best just use a lyrics vid / don't record the official video on OBS, to avoid copyright issues), then take a minute to stroke your beard wondering how the h3ll an a capella group could possibly do that.... *then* let Home Free's cover wash over you. If you're not impressed, I'll give you your money back myself!! ;)
Already recorded the reaction to Brother in Arms
@@TheEclecticBeard Ah, nae bother!
Hopefully you found it suitably haunting. It's worth giving the original a listen (not asking for a reaction vid)- it's pretty striking itself. Mark Knopfler is in my all-time top5 guitarist list.
Cheers for replying. :)
OMG, Voice Play just dropped a new one on us. It is called In My Room. Their cover is better than the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys can't hold a candle to Voice Plays cover. The Beach Boys can't harmonize very well. Voice Plays harmonize beautifully. Please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover of In My Room. I would greatly appreciate it, as well as all Voice Play fans.
The only difference between the fiddle and violin is how it is played. Same instrument. Welcome to Wonderland.
you like covers look for The HU/// SAD BUT TRUE
Metallica Acapella? How about some Van Canto? Ok they're cheating a little and use real drums, but anyway.
