      Acids buildup over time. Plants, alge, and a good substrate with crushed coral will provide plenty of buffer. Planted tanks don't have a problem generally.

    40yrs of experience.
    Set a tank up with fresh water and a new filter going for 24hrs, then take a filter from a running tank and squeeze all the dirty gunk out of that filter into new tank and then let it clear over 24 to 36 hours,then you can start adding fish but don't add lots at once.

    I prefer fish in cycles. They are more work but I prefer that way. I add beneficial bacteria and wait 72 hours. You do have to test way more often and do way more water changes. But this advice is great

    I remember watching a video of yours where you said it would be fine to have a heater on in the morning and heat the tank for hours at a time instead of a constant cutting in and out. Is that still your opinion? Seems to contradict the stable temp portion of this video.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I think the devil is in the details. In a 1 gallon, gonna cool off pretty quick. In a 150 gallon, takes much longer. Room temp plays a big part. As well as equipment. With a few powerheads, powerful lights, and a canister filter or two and you might not even need a heater assuming you have tight fitting lids. Lids themselves add 2 degrees to tank temp pretty much.

    I would think that asking someone new to the hobby to wait for 4-6 weeks for the tank to be cycled before adding ANY fish is not realistic (You would have to be a seasoned hobbyist to cycle a tank within 2 weeks). Probably a better idea is to teach them how to add fish closer to how most of us did when we first started: adding very few fish at the beginning to start the nitrogen cycle and how to problem solve. Yes, it will be a bumpier road but we learn along the way and become a better hobbyist.

      Do you have an API Master test kit to check your water parameters? How long was your tank running prior to adding fish?

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sounds like possibly disease. Are you new to fish, or you would notice diseases? Can also post on the forum with a pic of the tank and some water parameters. forum.aquariumcoop.com/

      8 neons after 2 weeks of set up seemed rushed. Should have started with 1 or 2 hardy fish to start the nitrogen cycle. Give time for the good bacteria to seed and multiply. After a month or 2 after the initial set up, then add few more fish.

    When I get a new tank, First I take out about 20% of the gravel or sand from one of my older tanks. Put that amount of new substrate in the older tank and finish the new take with new substrate and mix together, Second i take out some filter media from an old tank in add to the new aquarium filter. Put new matching amount of new media in the older tank. After water temperature and tank clarity of new tank are set, i can then add some fish. Be sure the old tank is healthy. I wait a couple of days before fish are feed in both tanks to allow filters to mature.

    Does mosquito larvae count as signs of life instead of snails? No sarcasm intended because it does happen

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I'm not sure what the tolerance of mosquito larvae is to ammonia. For instance Daphnia can take really high ammonia that would kill fish. So wouldn't be a sign to add fish but a sign that your tank is alive and part of the ecosystem.

    • @davidlee8406
      @davidlee8406 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Mosquito larvae feed on organic material, microscopic plants and animals, bacteria. So in general there is at least a micro ecosystem. I assume this happened in an outdoor container that you don't actively maintain. If big enough container, consider testing with a hardy fish such as feeder white cloud minnows and see what happens.

    1 month for my 75 gall to cycle(Before I discover there's a nitrifying bacteria in a bottle😅)
    Another 4 weeks because I did create a Tote box Hospital tank for the fishes that I will be adding.
