The old Mac Pro's were awesome machines. I bought one a few years ago and used it as a media server for Plex, whilst also being a TimeMachine drive for two other networked Macs, and... I also used it to backup my iPhone. It was power hungry and got very warm. I maxed it out with RAM and storage drives - totalling many TB's. I sold it about five years ago, sadly, a courier totally f**ked it up by throwing it down some stairs and then claimed they didn't insure Apple computers - despite paying for EXTRA insurance... anyway... I replaced it with an i5 Mac Mini, which lasted a few years. The downside was the Mini didn't have the internal storage capacity and performance speed I needed - even after adding a SSD and more RAM. It was okay for basic stuff. Now, I'm on a M1 Max Studio, which is very quick - two years on, it still runs as fast as my two year old, i9, (64GB Ram with SSDs) Windows, (work bought) video editing rig. The graphics cards are holding Macs back - even the new M4's - not forgetting the lack of memory and SSD expansion - come on Apple!! How much to upgrade the RAM and SSD?!?

On the matter brought up at 7:24, what in the world was the previous owner thinking when (s)he got rid of three of the hard drive trays? I doubt it made the Mac Pro any easier to lift and carry. It's been years since I've touched one those Mac Pros, but the only reason you wouldn't want to use the original hard drive tray is if you're installing a SATA SSD instead of a 3.5" form factor SATA HDD. Nice video! As a Graphics Designer I knew them when in use. A fun fact, when I see Jurassic Park in cinema 1993, Dennis Nedry used the same Mac Quadra 700 which I used in my job at that time. 🙂OMG, a long time ago. 😂
@@VisualScout Hey man, I also remember seeing all the SG workstations in Jurassic Park 😁 And yeah, time flies like crazy!
I still have one, but some days ago one of the rises have a shortcut after a energy fault. it was 16gb at total with El capitan running fine, now just 8gb with one rise.
Ah, man, that’s too bad! Well, I bet 8 gigs also does a fine job! 🤘
@@jonescd76 Hey, man, thanks so much for sharing your experience with these machines! Super interesting. As far as upgradability goes, yeah, it’s hard to beat the old Mac Pros. Maybe that’s why they’ve lasted so long on the marketplace. And, as I’ve said, you can still technically use one as a media player or a server. It sucks you can’t do any more upgrades on modern macs. Cheers!

why no vacuuming of dust? brushing would just spread the dust
@@lachlanlau Hey, thanks for commenting! If I was outside, I would’ve hit this thing with compressed air, but since this thing is heavy as crap, I just dusted it off indoors. Vacuuming actually doesn’t work as well, and you can easily damage something. Using a brush dipped in alcohol actually works better and doesn’t spread the dust as much.
@@schvabek I meant brush and dust. I recently cleaned a relative's old A1494. I held the vacuum near an old toothbrush as I brushed away the dust.

On the matter brought up at 7:24, what in the world was the previous owner thinking when (s)he got rid of three of the hard drive trays? I doubt it made the Mac Pro any easier to lift and carry.
But otherwise, this looks like a steal of a deal! I also respect the time and effort you made to get an 18 year old PC up and running.
Thank you so much! 🤘As far as the previous owner, I actually don’t know wether the thing came with all trays when you bought it, or perhaps you had to order them with the hard drives? Anyways, yeah, it sucks.
@@schvabek Those Mac Pros come with FOUR hard drive trays, *standard*. It's been years since I've touched one those Mac Pros, but the only reason you wouldn't want to use the original hard drive tray is if you're installing a SATA SSD instead of a 3.5" form factor SATA HDD. Hey, thanks for your feedback! I’ve heard a lot about M class Mac Pro machines (and monitors), but I doubt I’ll be able to afford anything in that price range. The current MB pro serves me well, even if it is a couple years old at this point. But, having used Mac for over 20 years at this point, I can tell you the next machine is going to be a Mac as well.
@schvabek My company paid for it. Very expensive! But cheap compared to an HEDT Xeon or Threadripper system. Add studio and field video equipment, and it doesn't take long to have a small fortune in hardware and software.
Then you dont know how to build a proper workstation
@BeHeaven616 You're funny. We have workstations at our engineering firm that I guarantee you can not afford it. The negative about Apple is that their stuff is non servicable and can't be upgraded. They are not suitable for our engineering needs. But for video editing, it's a very impressive machine. Could my guys build one better? The answer is yes. But at a substantially higher cost.
@@Tinfoilhat311 one thing i learned over the years is that you should never claim someone cant afford something.
