I purchased one of these for my wife for Christmas two years ago. Yeah, I know they say you're not supposed to get a woman a vacuum cleaner as a Christmas gift. I say BS! And so does she. To date, she still says this is the best Christmas gift I've ever given her, and I'd have to agree, even if I do say so myself. Our home is 2,800 sq feet, two thirds carpet and a third tile floor, and this thing ROCKS! Or I guess you could say it really suck; pun intended. Yes, when I purchased it, it was about $500, but it's literally worth every penny. It does a much better job than the $250 hoover corded vacuum we have now collecting dust in our laundry room, and with none of the hassle. It's so light, so easy to maneuver, and the vacuum head has such a low profile, it easily glides right underneath every piece of furniture we own. I know a lot of people think these things were designed for little DustBuster type spot cleaning, but I can assure you, they're wrong. Although it does a great job with those little cleanups as well. In fact, we have a DustBuster handing on the wall right next to our Dyson V8, and 99% of the time I just grab the Dyson because it's more powerful and every bit as convenient to use. However, we use our Dyson V8 as our main vacuum cleaner for the entire house. It does an amazing job on tile floors, and an even more amazing job on carpet. It's so quiet, and there's no hassle of a cord. You just pop it off the wall charger, and go to "work." If you've got the dough, (which I think they've dropped about $100 in price since I purchased ours) then I can't recommend this thing enough. If I were you, I wouldn't even bother with the smaller models, like the V6. Just save up the money and go right for this bad boy; you'll be glad you did. It comes with everything you need for every "sucky" job you'll have for cleaning your floors, furniture and even your car. You'll end up vacuuming your home much more often because it's so much convenient and easy with this little beauty. The reason I happen to be on here, is because I was looking up how to take it apart and clean the filters and vacuum heads, which as it turns out, is extremely easy. Most of the parts you just rinse off in the sink, including the filters. Yes, I know I sound like a Dyson rep doing a commercial, but I'm really just some retired guy in Arizona who's happy we own one of these. Although, I won't so no if Dyson wants to send me some freebies for spreading the word about what a great product this is. And if not, I still love our Dyson V8 Absolute.

Using the Dyson V8, dose the thickness of the carpet make a difference?

I have owned a Dyson V8 for 9 - 10 months, purchased from Bed, Bath and Beyond - battery is only lasts 3 to 4 minutes. The vacuum cleaner was only used 1.5 per week. Very high price and very low quality. My next vacuum cleaner will be 110 V hard wired. I can buy three regular vacuum cleaners for the price of the Dyson.

The absolute has a better battery than the animal, longer run time. Also the brush bar that comes with both models is more powerful on the absolute by 20watts

I bought this vacuum for my husband and he is very pleased with it. The vacuum time is only 5 minutes, so it wouldn’t be a good buy for a big house!

Operating time is 5 minutes when you use the carpet or the soft hardwood power attachment on the high Turbo speed. You get much more time when you don’t use the high power speed, but use the regular speed. If you are just sucking up bread crumbs in the kitchen, and hair on your bathroom floor you can take off the powerhead and just use the wand with one of the other (non-motorized) attachments, and this will provide you with additional time for that job.

Yes, under cold water and make sure it's completely dried before using it again.

I don't think they are. My girlfriend's parents have one that I just recently used, and it's as amazing as they say.

Of course it is, I own the V8, it's a great device! But to evaluate a product, you have to compare it with the competition. Only speaking how great everything is sounds like an ad to me.
