If you have time to remove the covers and the lower radiator hose, that's fine. But honestly, I think if you are just draining and refilling, all you need to do is drain the radiator and coolant reservoir. No need to take off the covers. If you look at 0:57 there is a special hole there designed just for this purpose. I don't think the extra coolant from the lower radiator hose will make a difference because there will always be residual coolant in the block.
Loosening the drain plug can be easily done from above without having to get under the car and take off the two undercarriage covers. I easily removed the coolant reservoir and then was able to get my hand down to where the plug was and loosen it with my hand, followed by tightening it with my hand once all the fluid had been drained.
This is the way. Saw another video about reaching down the back of the radiator to turn the valve but my arms are too big! Except be sure to use pink/red Asian coolant since you are not doing a full flush. You should use pink/red Asian coolant anyway. If your coolant color is anything other than pink/red, you should flush instead, so you can make sure the wrong stuff is completely gone from the engine. Also a drain and fill is fine, no need for a flush unless your coolant is in absolutely terrible shape or the wrong color. It's why Toyota says 100k then every 50k thereafter. If you actually did a flush at 100k then you probably could wait another 100k for the next service. But DIY drain and fill is so cheap to do it makes more sense dollar wise. Finally, keep any eye on your temp gauge for a day or so after this just in case it didn't burp enough air. It only took about 20 minutes with the heater on full blast to get the air out for me. Normal full temp should be about 1/3 or so up the temp gauge, but shouldn't reach 1/2 or more.
Color is color but water is water that will rust your internal engine components. So it’s always safer to use mixed antifreeze then water 👀 so learn something new in your life Flying Bob 👍.
Don't need to remove the undercarriage shield. Just reach 'down' through the top of engine. As for the fancy funnel toys. Ask yourself....what did people do before the funnel toys were invented to cost you more?
I feel there are actually a lot of things that are left out in this video doesn't show how to flush which is important for a full coolant change or mention to check your hoses or how to fully drain the cooling system like the block but I guess if you don't mind mixing different products it's fine unless it's not your first time and just know what coolant is already in there I don't know just feel like a lot is left out
Is it a good idea to mix different coolants? The pink long life stuff came out and you didn't flush or pull the block plugs to fully get out the stock stuff. Is that blue coolant compatible?
Good video, but at the end you sped through the part about replacing and/or disconnecting the fan? Also, I looked on your site, but could not find this kit for sale. None of your links go to the kit.
+james cook Thanks for watching! She is just referring to a video we have for replacing the fans! If they do not kick on when the engine reaches temp you simply forgot to connect the fan harness. If you are just swapping out coolant then you do not have to worry about that. We currently do not offer the coolant filler tool that we showcase in the video, but that is something that is sold at many auto part stores.
What else can I use of I don't have a coolant funnel kit. Can I use a funnel with a skinny tio on the end and out it in and little further so it doesn't leak out the top???
So all you did was put new coolant in the radiator, you didn't drain the block or the heater core. Isn't the purpose of a coolant change to swap it all out, not just part of it?
She should do at least one flush w distilled water to get some of the old coolant out the heater core and engine. More would be better especially if the coolant has rust.
I think it makes more sense if your changing the fluid to drain all of it including the block then flush and see what you get out of it I feel like if you don't drain the block or turn the heater on to flush the heater core at the same time then your mixing products also if it was clogged I wouldn't think you could just flush it all out with just water there are other chemicals for the flush process but what do I know I'm just a kid who just read it in a haynes repair manual which I recommend to anyone mechanic or not, experience or no experience
Nicely done. Two comments/questions: 1. I was under the impression that Toyota red coolant was required in these cars. Can anyone comment? 2. Is it possible to avoid shield removal and instead insert a short 5/16" hose onto the petcock outlet from below and then loosen the petcock from above?
+Cayman West Thanks for watching! As long as you can access both the petcock and lower hose to drain all the coolant then you can certainly do that! You can also use any coolant that is formulated for your engine. You do not necessarily have to use Toyota approved coolant only. Just check the bottle to see if it will be okay to use on your vehicle!
It depends on the brand. Zerex blue is fine for all asian vehicles. I use it on my Mazda which would use the green that Autozone sells without problems.
Please use pink toyota antifreeze don't use that blue fluid in your toyota also NO need to remove that under shield the is a dedicated hole under fluid will drain down out there into a bucket.
I feel like as far as cars have come why is why to drain the radiator fluid S.O.P. is medieval in archaic. Yeah I just think something that's important that's on the engine cooling system man it should be a state of art as it Comes. But great job sister I like you
If youre driving in Texas, 5050 coolant is garbage because of very low temperature resistance. Buy concetrated coolant and make mix it in 70% coolant and 30% distilled water.
Do you have a video to replace the coolant in a 2000 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder? I think my Camry needs flushed as well. I was told to use stilled water to flush the coolant system. Not to use tap water. So how do I do that? This Camry was given to me. After 3 years I'm still learning this Camry. My last car was a 1987 Cavalier 4 door. I knew everything about that car.

Doesn’t anyone do a full flush anymore? Adding new coolant to old coolant that you never got out accomplishes nothing and most importantly, it’s a total waste of money.
It's only necessary to flush if your old coolant is contaminated. The factory fill is good for 100,000 miles or five years. A refill is only good for five years or 50,000 miles probably for the reasons you mentioned.
