A lot of people don’t realise that the SmackDown 6 was a Tag Team feud between Los Guerreros, Angle and Benoit, and Edge and Rey Mysterio. So thanks for letting people know what it actually was.
Never did realize it until later on when Paul reveal the idea behind Smackdown 6, three themed interchangable tag teams which could be pushed into the main event at any time or liven up the midcard
Of course it was a tag team feud. But any combination of the feud that can carry any episode, and that can elevate five out of six guys into the main event picture
@@Piepea Kurt Angle was already in the main event picture at the time though.
@@nu-metalfan2654 i agree i see it more as 6 guys who were able to put their differences aside and maintain successful wrestling business after the decline of the era of the NWO
That's the reason they had to break all 3 teams up... THE 6 CORNERSTONES wrestlers on the brand were engulfed in tag teams....
The Smackdown 6 and 2016 Smackdown Live era were some of my favorite stretches of weekly wrestling programming. They were both legitimately "the land of opportunity" for talent to shine
AJ Dean Cena feuding for the title was really fun too watch. Besides Ellsworth, everything else was perfect. Miz has the IC champ, Randy and Ziggler having great matches with whoever.
@Trevor J I’d say Styles, Ziggler, Miz, Wyatt, Cena and Ambrose
What a disgrace. Ziggla, ambrose and miz?? 👎 It's like half of the Smackdown 6 were Chavos
SmackDown had an absolutely amazing roster at the time. Lesnar, Taker, Big Show, Eddie, Benoit, Edge, Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle, Hogan, John Cena, Chavo, Rikishi, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas, Rhyno, APA, Billy and Chuck, Matt Hardy, Billy Kidman, Tajiri, just an amazing roster of talent.
Batista
@@chains7546 batista was still in evolution at that time
@@chains7546 He was later, Batista was on Raw at the time.
Those lower card guys always put on good matches.
Best roster ever
Smackdown was the real A - Show and Land of Opportunity back then under these Six legends
Yep and that damn match at no mercy
@Leo Hernández If Aew sucks than, what is WWE now…
@@stevonwhite8933 thats a good point
@@stevonwhite8933 well when you say wwe, you put your finger on the three brands, raw nxt and SD, but know that raw is trash, but SD and nxt is doing pretty good. So wwe doesn't suck to be honest. And I don't wish to say anything about aew since I'm not familiar with the product.
Looking down the line, about 5 years later at Summerslam, tragically both Eddie and Benoit were gone, Angle was in TNA, Edge was out with injury, leaving just Chavo and Rey to feud again. And now 19 years later, Edge and Rey are back on Smackdown.
Angle is retired and Chavo is in AEW
Can't wait for an Eddie and Benoit last comeback Benoit as a heel obviously
@@anotherperson2629What?
@@aaron_aj_knight_95 you don't expect eddie and Benoit being faces hence them coming back as heels
@@anotherperson2629 Sorry the comments only confused me. Like...."they're both dead"??
These guys were one of the reasons why smackdown was beating raw in the ratings from 02-03. Its not surprising either, you could either watch hhh cut a 20min promo on mondays or these 6 guys have classics on Thursdays. They also helped establish SD as the "wrestling show". Guys like hardy, punk, bryan, styles, zayn and owens owe a lot to the smackdown 6.
Isn't Jeff Hardy a rising star back then on Raw even with HHH reign of terror and he did reach the summit later on
Exactly that smackdown roster and show was great with Cena doctor of thuganomics gimmick along with brock lesnar and undertaker with Vince McMahon showing up on that brand you had everything
@@s4xtt Yes, but he truly reached his peak on smackdown in 2008-09.
Chavo was never part of that
From 2002-2003 there were only 11 times SD beat Raw in ratings.
Putting these 6 together was an absolutely brilliant move by Heyman as having those 6 working together made for excellent promos & matches
i rather have jericho to replace chavo
@@vampirascoffin870 agreed but Vince really wanted Jericho on Raw
@@christopherballero866 yeah of course but jericho really didnt do much on raw good matches but very throw aways
@@vampirascoffin870 Heyman got Benoit & Eddie in exchange of Jericho.
Man tuning into smackdown back in the day as a kid on thursday night on UPN was always a treat. Was just the perfect way to lead into the coming weekend.
Saturday morning after burn
Poor Chavo, so underrated.
Everyone has they’re eyes on Eddie me included I always liked Eddie I still think he’s one of the g.o.a.t. With Rey and Chris Benoit with pure talent before people bitch about what Benoit did yes it happened there’s here say he didn’t do it what ever I hope he didn’t but sometimes good people do bad things..
@@thedistractedcanadian4355 .....the op was talking about chavo dude
Chavo Guerrero was underrated, perhaps still underrated. I remember the rivalry between Rey and Chavo. It was intense
His greatest fault is being related to Eddie.
i remember when chavo had a match with cm punk .. jesus . made punk look like a jobber .
I think probably Chavo gets his dues, among wrestlers. Much like Christian. But I agree Chavo is absolutely unrated.
That shit was crazy!! Remember when Ray had his knee stuck in that spot on the stage and chavo repeatedly hit his knee with that chair.
Look how he wrestled in lucha underground against Rey.
Thank you for recognizing the 2002 Taker/Brock HIAC for the greatness it was. No flashy leaps, no leaving the cage, and no shenanigans. Just sheer brutality and a GREAT story. You can literally see Brock grow in that match. There is a spot where Brock goes to Heyman and says "What do I do?" and Heyman just replies "Be the next big thing!" Brock just looks at him and GOES after that. Love that.
Hated that match as a kid lol first PPV I ever saw , recorded it at night , went to school and watched the tape after class. Shit was ass. No cool spots or nothing.
@NinjaFingers19 There is another company called AEW that is FULL of "cool spots" for the kid in you to enjoy!
(Yes this is a joke)
@@leviathan_is_me lmfao
Further proof that letting Paul loose on the creative of wwe no matter what show and he'll give us gold
Heymans downfalls are money "aka not being able to pay wrestlers" and being more creative than Vince McMahon "which obviously VM doesn't like". If anyone would truly back the guy and give him freedom, he'd undoubtedly be the greatest promoter and writer of all time IMO.
In an interview on Chris Jericho's podcast Heyman said he got laughed at because he requested Benoit and Guerrero as compensation for McMahon taking Jericho and putting him on Raw. Raw was doing terrible numbers in T.V. ratings and Heyman suggested Tazz and Cole to do the commentating for Smackdown matches at ppv. I believe the true reason McMahon relieved Heyman of his duties is because Smackdown was DESTROYING Raw and his creativity(Heyman) was behind it all hell Triple H could've had a hand in it too his past speaks for itself.
What’s even more funny and somewhat shockingly genius is Paul’s vision/creative gave us 6-8 years worth of great matches and feuds during and after 02/03... Benoit won the RR and became champion at a wrestle mania, edge and cena highlighted countless title match PPVs, Eddie and Kurt has tense feuds and hard fought title matches..
Yes let him loose and he gives you a cuckolding storyline as well . Rusev Lana Lashley Liv was Paul. I like Paul but he gets over indulgent as well
It was an excellent evolution of Attitude. Russo wanted EVERYONE to have some sort of storyline. So on Smackdown at this point it was "Ok let's not focus on one or two maineventers, or everyone, but give a distinct group of very capable promising talent the joined spotlight, and see who the fans eventually gravitate to organically".
What does Russo have to do with any of this? Wasn’t he in TNA at this point?
@@lebeaumuni6247 evolution from the Attitude Era into the Ruthless Aggression Era
Is what he means
Russo had many, many, _many_ flaws as a booker which I will not enumerate on here, but he also had his merits, probably the strongest of which was his drive to make full use of the roster. A professional wrestler represents years of training and a skill set which is not easy to duplicate, so if they're left sitting in catering because "sorry, creative has nothing for you" then it's creative who should be wished well in their future endeavours.
That said, a lot of what Russo gave talent to do was _moronic,_ but that doesn't change the validity of the sentiment.
@@ArcaneAzmadi his pole matches lmao
@@ArcaneAzmadi facts Russo wasn't a great booker, but he gave everybody back in the day a purpose to involved with a storyline
Never knew the Heyman-booked Angle/Benoit 2002 feud was inspired by his other creation Storm-Candido.
Great video!
The SmackDown Six were one big reason I hooked on to SmackDown when I was a kid and starting to watch wrestling. Great memories.
That 2 out of 3 falls match, one of the best ever. I remember watching that on TV when I was 12 and holy shit I was mesmerized.
Those six played huge roles in the success of the Ruthless Aggression era and Smackdown's constant growth. All 6 (weelll maybe not all 6) deserving of that HOF spot.
Benoit’s never getting in. And Chavo probably won’t get in cause he’s on bad terms, but seeing how guys like Ultimate Warrior and Jeff Jarrett got in, never say never
@@kmversion1 even if he was on good terms I don't know if Chavo belongs. Granted their is some questionable inductees but idk if Chavo belongs.
@@agentorange1156 if Torrie Wilson, the Bushwhackers, and the Great Khali could get in, Chavo can get in
I'd say Chavo should at least get a nod representing Los Guerreros. If other guys can get inducted multiple times simply by their association with a stable or team, then stick Eddie in there twice and pay respects to Chavo in the process.
I'd say Chris Benoit eventually gets into the HOF at some point in the future... I know this is a bold take though lmfao
Hands down, the best wrestling talent ever collected on one roster at one time!
The True Story Of:
- ECW’s last show
- ECW’s September show in Toronto where they had nearly 10K fans and sold al of their merchandise…yet no one got paid (a lot of the wrestlers knew this was the end of ECW)
- ECW’s original first TNN episode that got replaced with a “best of ECW” show
5 of these 6 have already gone in, or will go, into the Hall of Fame. Says a lot about the quality of talent on display.
Don’t think Chavo’s gonna be in the hall of fame. He isn’t on good terms with the big dub. And as for Benoit, he’s never getting in
@@kmversion1 Yeah I know Benoit's never getting in... Chavo though, he's not the only guy who's been on bad terms with Vince and company. Goldberg and Bret Hart immediately spring to mind, and they both eventually came back. Maybe you're right, maybe he won't bother coming back, but it wouldn't be unusual if he did.
We all agree benoit should/would be in. But even if on good terms I doubt Chavo gets in
@@agentorange1156 Benoit would’ve gotten in if he hadn’t done what he did. Should he go in now? No, he just can’t.
@UCnolqYS7SoFX5txJcFYczxg he didn't mean to have u heard about benoits brain dumbass😭
The 3-way between Mysterio, Kurt, and Benoit really showcased all three men at once.
The smackdown 6 led to the Smackdown 7 real quick, the loss of Chavo and Edge they gained Cena, Brock, and Taker all in one month, like late November
Smack down six is when I fell in love with wrestling. Really sucks that we lost 2/6 of them
Shame we lost one of them you mean
Smackdown 6 era Smackdown is up there with the best eras of any wrestling promotion
One team is still on Smackdown. Coincidence, I think so.
True lol
Feel bad for Chavo. He was a part of them but the others were just leaps and bounds better. All he had going for him the rest of his career was repeating his last name; and when he does that people are gonna automatically think about Eddie
He was the Janettey of the Smackdown Six
Chavo did technically become world champion with the ECW title, but the remaining 5 was in position way favorable than him.Kurt is already a proven main eventer but will never be the face of the company, Edge was someone they have high hopes for but was still rough, Eddie and Rey appeal to SD latino demographic due to their pre wwe days and Chris is one of the best mat wrestler
@@s4xtt chavo as ecw was a fucking joke lets be real dude
@@s4xtt
Eddie Guerrero & Rey Mysterio appealed to more than just the Latino demographic. They were great wrestlers that anybody of any ethnicity can get behind and become fans of. This isn’t the case of Jinder Mahal or The Great Khali which was actual pandering. Had those guys had the talent of Eddie or Rey, they would loved by fans regardless of demographic like Eddie & Rey.
@@vampirascoffin870 Never deny it was a joke, but at least Chavo can put in his resumee he is a former world champion and if the man himself is contented with it, I guess we should let it be
It's unfortunate that Chris Jericho was stuck on Raw at that time. He would've fit well within this group more than Chavo.
thank you!! facts!
Also Lance Storm. I'm pretty sure that Heyman could have give to him a way more memorizable run for him than what he did on RAW back on the day
Or RVD
Yeah, but would Eddie have had the same tag chemistry with Jericho? Could they have worked the 'Lie, cheat and steal' gimmick?
@@because_the_internet I think Eddie can have that gimmick on his own. The great thing about that group is that you could mix & match. Remember Angle's rivalry w/ Eddie? I feel that they could've made a better odd couple than the one we got w/ Benoit. The two Chrises could've been a complementary pair as well. Or perhaps have Eddie team up w/ Mysterio while Edge & Jericho form an alliance. Then again, I think Y2J & Eddie could've made an entertaining dynamic as well by sticking to their own gimmicks like Angle & Benoit did.
Basically what you're saying is that "Paul Heyman is the best writer in the box"!
Up the Smackdown fabes!
Always liked Smackdown over Raw. Deuce and Domino, Miz and Nitro, Wang Yang, Mysterio, Punk, Shelton Benjiman, Carlito, Kennedy, those guys were my childhood. Tommy Dreamer, Eddie and Chavo, Kane and the Undertaker were amazing too.
I love how you showed two off the three prime stars on Raw fade on leaving HHH. I didn’t really think about it at the time, but you’re dead on the money with this video. Raw in essence was just the “HHH Show” feat Evolution.
Even tho Raw always had a bigger feel to it, Smackdown was always better in terms of quality, nope it didn't always have the bigger stars for some reason it always put on the better show and that's even more facts today.
I would say the reason smackdown was slightly better than raw especially during those times was because it was usually 90 percent prerecorded so they can edit out certain botches or extras before it aired...plus these are athletes nonetheless they knew raw was the main show to be so they tried to out perform them proving the blue brand was just as good.
But yea you could see this in how good the matches were 💫
There was so many legendary pieces from teddy long jbl birth of John cena
Angle vs Benoit - that’s wrestling at its finest. No stalling or bullshit and no botches. So fluid and with actual moves! Suplexes, submission and a bit of stuff from the top rope too. Don’t see enough of that anymore. Sometimes you can just book good wrestling!
Was really gonna be upset if Matt Hardy didn’t get a mention
Billy kidman was solid back then too
Love em or hate em Paul Heyman is one of the best of all times when it comes to his knowledge of the professional wrestling industry
I loved the Tag matches between Eddie and Chavo vs Angle and Benoit. So many suplexes!
Loved hearing about this era of WWE! Phenomenal video!!
2002 will go down as the greatest year in Smackdown history! And it's because of one man. Paul Haymen!
You guessed it - Frank Stallone.
@@HarmlessChildren lol!
Loved this video!! I definitely appreciated that group of guys getting the attention they deserve
A great time in SmackDown history !
The Smackdown 6!! Shout out to the X-Traders, Elite Traders, Rumble Room, and Uber Forums
I really wanna see Heyman be the guy under Triple H for creative and let him run SD again while Triple H oversees Raw and overall plan, but allow Heyman to lead SD creative. I think having this happen would take a load off and allow us to get the best product while still having things connect with things still running thru Triple H so all storylines don’t mess with each other in negative ways. Just my opinion tho. Loving the product overall again since Triple H took over.
The fact that Edge and Rey pretty much reunited against Roman Reigns last week is friggin EPIC!!!
I miss Eddie ,I got to meet him once he was one of my favorites
I used to love Thursday nights, I was 6 or 7 and when my family went to sleep I would sneak to the living room and watch smack down. I couldn’t afford to miss a episode. I remember seeing edge and Rey mysterio win the tag team titles, a young Brock lesnar and undertaker. Wwe was my child hood
Been a fan for years; well done vid. F'N shame what happened to Benoit (CTE of an 80 plus year old). Glad this did just to all 6 grapplers.
Fantastic work guys :)
This actually explains a lot. I missed the entire Attitude era and even this part of the Ruthless Aggression era, I was too young, but I did catch the tail end of the RA era. I always preferred SmackDown, even though Edge was gone, the other five remained, and whether or not the writing was good (again, too young to know,) the matches were always great fun to watch.
Very informative, thank you Jack!
i love how edge and Rey tagged before and now there kinda working together and its on smackdown
I always thought SD should've created "Smackdown Six Rankings". 6 Men for the World and IC Title, 6 Teams and 6 Women for their respective titles.
I think it would be a nod to the fans and also a ranking system such as that could at very least explain the rematches, as once entering the rankings, you're required to beat your 5 rivals in order to earn a shot at the title. Top the ranks and you get a shot, drop to the bottom then your next loss will see you out of the SD6.
I think what worked for the Smackdown Six was that they all had chemisty with each other. Even though they didn't I could see you mixing these tag team groups and still ending up with a perfect product. These men were wrestlers and entertainers in a wwe lanscape that was still coming out of the shock and awe era of the company that had previously wanted entertainers rather than good ole wrestlers. It really is a true testement that to this day these men are legends in their own right.
By 2004 smackdown felt like the b show the departure of Brock the draft picks that let smackdown with a thin roster the lack of main eventers and heels and the immense pressure put on Eddie to fix the drowning ratings I’ll recovery but the best era of smackdown was 2002 to 2003 imo
Yeah once Mark Jindrak and Kenzo Suzuki showed up shit went south fast
@@waynetables6414 don’t forget the singles run of Charlie haas and the lack of a tag division at least we got mvp but we got also got Luther reigns yeap
@@kokotheclown2588 Yeah MVP didn't come till way later unfortunately. Luther, Jindrak, Heidenreich, Mordechi, Kenzo Suzuki, and Renee Dupree all a combined F+
@@waynetables6414 I got high hopes for Rene but man they drop the ball with him smackdown was so dry they have the Dudley boyz go against the undertaker at a main event ppv let that sink in
@@kokotheclown2588 and they stupidly lumped Booker T in with the Dudley Boyz in the Triple H trade. They should have had Booker be a draft pick but WWE literally announced to the audience that Booker is 1/3 as valuable as HHH. How does that elevate anyone? They probably wanted to push RVD a bunch of different times but never trusted him because they viewed him as a drug guy and was typecast as a chill stoner to an extent.
Attitude era SD was good but This era of SD is definitely when the show came into it's own. Lesnar was promoted heavily as champ, SD "Here Comes The Pain" video game was out, Big show and Lesnar broke the ring, Taker was at the end of his biker gimmick, John Cena, Vince & Sable vs Stephanie, lol, Hogan/Mr.America, along with the SD six. I remember that's when everyone was talking about SD while RAW was stuck with HHH's ego.
5 world champions, and Chavo Guerrero
Chavo should've at least won the Intercontinental and United states championship.
@@brianban110 at least he got the ECW title 😂
Chavo is a former World Champion. Doesn't matter how anyone feels or thinks, but the WWE ECW Championship is a World title.

This was the wrestling I loved
This was my era of wrestling!!! Love the attitude era but this hits home the most!!!
Right on time today and with breakfast too! Once again with feeling......STORYTIME!!!!!!
"Conan the Nature Boy" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Said for years that during Triple Haitches "Reign of Terror" he was desparately trying to be Ric Flair, next to Ric Flair.
Eddie, Benoit and Angle were the best ever pure in ring wrestlers in my opinion...... Michaels in that mix too!
I'd put AJ above those 2. Respect Rey but he wasn't a main eventer for me
Hey guys I love you guys and it helps that your mainly jordies
I remember this. I was hardly watched Raw at the time unless there was a cross over with one of these guys.
I remember seeing an indy match on TWC of Eddie Guererro vs Jody Fleisch. I hadn't seen him in WCW and Eddie wasn't in a good place during his first run. This match was excellent and was the first sign for me of how good Eddie was going to be on his second run.
That draft was when I started wrestling these 6 guys are why I love wrestling
6 of my favorite wrestlers ever
Ooooooh Chavo
Technically all of them became world champions if you count the ECW title
In 2002, There was Smackdown Six.
In mid 2010s, there was Usos, The Bar and The New Day.
And nowadays its Usos, Dirty Dawgs and The Mysterios.
Fun fact: In 2002, there was Los Guerreros and now, there are The Mysterios (what a coincidence).
These legends are pure!!!
This era was so good for sd everytime I wanted to watch good wrestling I would put on sd everytime couldn't get into raw because sd had everything I liked
So, what I’m taking from this is Heyman came up with another awesome idea and the old man, Steph and HHH got mad cause his idea was bringing ass’ to seats and they’re idea was beating a dead horse. So what do they do? What they always do, bury Heyman’s ideas then fire him and give HHH the title as usual.
They're = they are
I have to say that Big Show and Booker T coming to Smackdown also helped
People crap on wwe at this time, but man, I consider it one of my favorites
I grew up watching smack down seeing these guy and other Star putting on great matches matches that are still talk about today
6 of the best wrestlers in their respective divisions from cruiserweight to main event in their primes of the same brand with chemistry like no other. That’s the SmackDown 6
Thanks to Paul Heyman for giving us SmackDown 6
I love this series
Also, Undertaker and Lesnar. Then, Benoit was moved to Raw and JBL got pushed with an excellent gimmick. Then Cena, when he had his better gimmick, and his feud with Big Show.
Smackdown was the reason I started watching wrestling again after years.
Great show as per usual when great talents and Paul Heyman's booking are involved.
Chavo maybe considered underrated but his peers definitely respect him no one has a bad thing to say about him
For me Peak Smackdown was when Brock Lesnar Suplexed Big Show off the top rope and breaking the ring...Thats when I realised Smackdown was way bigger than Raw...and it started with the Smackdown Six with Paul Heyman
Thanks for mentioning Chris Benoit
It was a wonderful time to be a wrestling fan
Survivor series 2002 was the showdown of smackdown 6. Edge and Rey Mysterio vs Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit vs Los Guerreros.
What an era.
Sick thumbnail!
Can you guys please do one of these videos on the All Japan exodus of 2000?!
Greatest moment in wrestling
good video
Smackdown was my favorite show when I was a kid after wcw went under. Too bad GM mode didn't think the same haha
like i said way back in the early 2000s
raw was for sports entertainment, smackdown offered better wrestling
in the current era you got rey and edge as the last remnants of the SD 6
Tremendous match. Guerrero was my fav
Peak SmackDown!
the Smackdown 6 had great matches...Smackdown was the show to watch more then RAW.
The thing that people don't realize is that this is so much like the Elway Marino draft. The fact that you can look back and see just how Stacked Smackdown was at that time is insane
I always think about how close Eddie and chavo Guerrero and Benoit and rey mysterio and chris Jericho were that what if they form a mega faction back then! Who would have stopped them outside of brock, rock, taker, angle and edge joining against them. But that's the thing that group could have cause a storyline come of that magnitude and propel EVERYONE involved. I miss Benoit and Eddie!
Eddie and Benoit belong to raw, but were drafted to SD by Steph
Almost forgot Rob zombie did edge's theme before alter bridge
Meanwhile on Raw you got to watch HHH talk for an hour, bury every WCW wrestler, practice necrophilia and be the only champion on the show!
