MKBHD: “Some people keep their computers for 9, 10 years.
But people watching this video DON’T fall into that demographic”
Me: wanna bet?
PC desktops, 3-5 years for me. PC Laptops 2-3 years (MAX). Macs ... 7 years usually.
Now my current 2013 27" iMac is ready to be upgraded. This is the one I'd normally buy, but now with the transition coming (and I won't buy the 1st gen of that) .. I'm in a bad spot. Wait .. and end up with a 9 or 10 year old iMac in the process. (to be fair, my kids mostly use it I have a 2017 MBP as well, and a pretty cool PC). But yes this "Osbourne" effect is real.
2000: Matte finish is obviously best for monitors!
2010: Gloss finish is obviously best for monitors!
2020: Matte finish is obviously best for monitors!
Like i know you probably know this, and it was a joke, however: matte displays had significantly worse contrast and image quality compared to glossy ones for quite some time now. As an owner of both a dell matte display and a 2020 nano-textured imac i can tell you that the imac has much better contrast than the dell, but also MUCH BETTER ANTIGLARE, to the point where the dell seems glossy by comparison.
But we have an extremely glossy XDR display on the new iPad with NO nano-coating option! Surely a tablet have no problems with screen glare and reflections, but I can't put a hood on top of my pro monitor at home like *everyone doing color accurate work in the world* and have to pay 500 bucks for a matte version...
Oh well.
The iMac I'm on now I purchased in 2009. I can wait another year.
mark yastion Same here. All that I’ve had done to it is a RAM bump and a new SSHD put in. Been a pretty solid machine really, and like how its easy(ish) to get at its internals, since the display is just magnetically connected to the unit.
I’ll probably upgrade it to a Mac Mini, as I’m loathe to pay the Apple tax for RAM, or for the VESA mount option.
I literally just searched Mac reviews to find out more about them. It came to me even before the recommendations
Dude’s had this before it was even announced... dude is 100% Apple PAID
“They’ve improved the webcam” me watching this at 144p because cabin WiFi “sure”
J J for 5k they could have slapped an iPhone 8’s camera on there for 20 bucks. Theirs no excuse.
Dope tips! I’m definitely one of those people that will wait a few years, keen to see these silicon iMacs 👀
"How long do you plan on keeping that Mac" hell Macs are expensive. Whenever I buy a Mac, I intend to keep it till it isn't good anymore.
Sure, but depending on your use-case, the point where it “isn’t good anymore” can vary wildly.
You might be using it for some high intensity work where it is economically worth upgrading in 12-24mths.
Or you could be like me and only need to upgrade every 5-6yrs.
We’re still using some 2012 MacBook Pros at work. The batteries are still good for the most part and their fine speed-wise for office work. They’re absolute tanks with the best build quality I’ve ever seen in a laptop. My own laptop is a 2015 model, and I have no reason to upgrade.
They are expensive, but the second hand market is super strong. You don't need to run it until it dies, you can still sell them for very good prices years down the line, more so than pretty much any other tech.
@@marsrocket Damn, that's some longevity! My 2009 MacBook Pro became processor-bound obsolete in about 5 or 6 years of use. Tried upgrading to an SSD, putting more RAM, but the Core 2 Duo was good for nothing more then about 5 web browser tabs and that's it. I still have it, and it'll be my computer dedicated for scanning photo negatives (damn FireWire). Also got a new battery around that time.
My 2017 MacBook Pro touchbar is already asking for a new battery. Won't hold 20 minutes off the power. That sucks. Thinking about getting a new one, but it's kinda expensive. 😔
Meanwhile, I'm stilling using my (fully specs out) late 2013 14-inch Retina MacBook Pro with FCPX and it still running great.
but its a mac ,a fully specced mac is like a 10 yr old outdated machine
@@girlsdrinkfeck HAHAHA sure. Most PCs won't even last 10 years but Macs easily do. Optimization is the name of the game 😛
Was ALMOST ready to replace my 2010 Mac Pro with a new one... yeah I'm one of those people.
I'm still running my early 2009 imac. We bought a 2019 imac to replace it, but that 2009 mac just keeps on running, so now we have two imacs.
I’m more than happy with my late 2015 model apart from issues with 4K video formats.
My dads still running his early 09 iMac, still goes hard and has never failed him
You may have a unicorn but clearly you taken good care of that machine. While everyone is getting new I still buy used intels. They still hold up very well.
4:02 Who else was surprised he was that close to the Mac 😂
Lmao I just noticed that, something to do with the camera and the depth of field setting.
Basically comes down to this:
“can you wait 1-2 years now to buy a computer that will likely last 3-4 years longer than buying the current available version right now.”
but the one year wait might be worth it for supposedly better performance.
But the newer one would not support bootcanp, wich is pretty important for me
Man it would suck to buy this thing and next year see a beautiful design refresh for the same price.
I don’t think you’ll be able to dual-boot windows tho. I know it’s unnecessary for most people but being able to use apps from both side and also for school purposes it’s neat
@@donny5073 Yeah, that kinda sucks. I use Windows on my Mac to make and test my games. The Mac side for the art and music creation. It was nice having just one machine.
I've had my MacBook for almost 10 years and it still runs pretty well and I love it, I'd hate it to stop being updated
Don't worry apple doesn't change the design so it would still look modern after 10 years
I got the MacBook Pro with touch bar and it probably last me the same time... Provided I don't smash it
Thank you for taking the time and gave us some quality advice.
MKBHD : Gets the studio lighting on point so that there are no reflections.
Also MKBHD : Cant show off matte glass because of the studio lighting.
Correction: I've watched about 5 more reviews and the screen is amazing that even in direct light it does not show any kind of reflections whatsoever, they have done a mind boggling job with this thing.

‘’Now you can use the iMac in rooms with Windows behind you’’
I’m pretty sure Tim Cook wouldn’t approve of that
Me after listening to 10 minutes of Mac discussion: “I want that Tesla mug...”
i have a different opinion: with macs with intel cpus, when apple decides they are obsolete, you can stick linux or windows on them and continue using them for years (in my house we have a 2007 mac mini core2duo, i put an ssd in it, and runs windows 10 just fine). With ARM you're gonna be stuck, because of course apple is not gonna use the same spec as, let's say, a RasPi, so you can't install linux without some serious work or virtualization. so i'm seriously thinking of getting a new mac NOW, before the transition, so i can enjoy it as long as i please.
Right now you can go on ubuntu cdimage page and grab an AARCH64 server iso that installs like any other iso. It does have the extra difficulty needing to install the gui on your own which should be only a couple commands.
guitarbass95 well this is good... i thought apple locked the bootloader preventing dual-booting or installing another OS on their new shiny boxes
@@Diguz91 No, there's just a lot of hardware incompatibility with things like the touch bar and track pad. Not saying it'd be a great experience in 2021 when the devices are released but by the time apple stops supporting the first arm macs, most of the bugs should be worked out. I don't know how it works now, but historically you could install windows bare metal on macs through boot camp, those same mechanisms allow you to install Linux.
People who buy Macs don't buy them to install windows or linux on them. I get where you're going with this, and it's a nice way of making old machine usable again, but I bought Mac to use with macOS, I can install windows or linux on any other (way cheaper) computer.

Ngl, I would be surprised if the iMac Pro even got an update, cause rn, they are throwing everything at the regular iMac, and if you need something better than a regular iMac then Apple would recommend you get a Mac Pro
Yeah apple is definitely not recommending the Mac Pro to anyone, it's really weak at the price points where iMac pro competes, it only makes sense if you're speccing it out. Apple is probably gonna stop updating both until they can figure out scaling their own processors for professional applications
@@manaspradhan8041 "It only makes sense if you're speccing it out" This is exactly my point. If you spec out a regular iMac (which by the way, can be maxed out to $8,500), and that is STILL NOT ENOUGH power for the work you need to do, then Apple will recommend a Mac Pro. That's what I meant when I commented earlier.
@@arkhalis3682 Yeah, I have a feeling that the iMac Pro was just a filler product. They probably released it to give actual professionals something better than a base iMac back in 2017, just until they got their new Mac Pro ready in 2019.
It will probably be discontinued. It was just there to be a placeholder for the Mac Pro and the new updated iMac's performance is as good as if not better than the iMac Pro
Watching this on my iMac 2010, so you're speaking to me. And yes, I do care about the design and Apple silicon, so thanks for addressing that!

I'm watching this in 2023 and still no new 27 inch imac...🤔 Looks like I'll have to buy a refurbished one from apple until or if they ever come out with a new one. The 24 inch is a no go
Marques: People use their iMacs for 8, 9, 10 years.
Me: Hold my beer. I still use my 2009 21.5" iMac.
How the hell isnt it desperately slow for you? Even the previous HDD iMacs are sooooo slow!
*on new years day*
MKBHD: so I've been trying out 2021 for about a month now
To be fair, I'm buying it cause I've been waiting since January to change my mid 2015 and who wants to be an early adopter of a product that has a high chance of not supporting some of the applications you desperately need. Since I use these to bring food on the table, I can't afford to waste time on things I shouldn't waste time on. Great vid!
AMD: finally has better processors than Intel after years and years of struggling
Apple: k bye we ditch x86 for ARM
Marques: You can work with it having windows behind you.
Apple employees watching this video: Nope...
As you said, is better to wait for iMacs with Apple Silicon. Despite this though, this Mac is a definitive goodbye for Intel processors.
Nice video, as usual.
Not so sure about this. The big benefit of Apple Silicon will be that they will use much less power than Intel chips, which will make them great for battery life in MacBooks, but it doesn’t really help an iMac. And I doubt Apple silicon will outperform the current top of the line desktop chips found in the iMac. Also, I think Boot Camp and the ability to run Windows will be gone with Apple silicon.
@@GraysonCarr I agree with you. Actually yes. With the release of Macs with Apple Silicon and macOS Big Sur, it's almost certain that bootcamp won't be available.

Obsolescence or not. I bought this Current model yesterday and it’s going to be delivered on Tuesday. Thank you for the great review!
Why does it seem like everyone ignores that every model comes with just 8 GB of memory by default...
Because unlike windows, OSX can run incredibly well with just 8GB. Don't get me wrong, windows still runs with 8gb but not as efficiently.

I still ended up buying the 2020 iMac fully spec'd out. I love it! I have the MBP Pro 14" too and I still use the iMac because of the power + screen. Worst case, I can also turn it into a windows PC or just use the display and connect that with my MBP and use only the display for it. I prefer this route over the studio display.
Us in 2027: "We used to have intel Macs once, imagine that!"
they wont say that since most of humans would rather use a windows PC over than the over priced bezzel
@@frezydynecy Ironically, there is rumours that Windows will start dropping Intel too and start a transition to ARM based processors on their own stuff as well because of the hot mess that is Intel right now. So who knows, Intel processors are starting to feel like an option only for PC people that build their own rigs, and even then most PC gamers would rather use AMDs chips.

Bradley Henady ‘only’ $1000... Normal people aren’t going to buy that sht. For a PC/laptop the iMac speakers are fine.
Most of my life I have been a frequent updater. 2-3 years max between new computers. But in 2014 I bought the very first 5k iMac on the first day of pre-order. I got a maxed out BTO model, and it still is working great. But at 6 years, I figured it was time for an upgrade. When they announced at WWDC 2020 the switch to Apple Silicon, I decided I would get the first iMac to have it. I was hoping this update was it, so was disappointed was just another intel spec update. MKBHD: The Last Intel Mac VS The Osborne Effect!
Me: *What is Osborne effect?*
Wiki said that :
The Osborne effect is a social phenomenon of customers canceling or deferring orders for the current soon-to-be-obsolete product as an unexpected drawback of a company's announcing a future product prematurely.
It was named after the Osborne Computer Corporation, who pre-announced an upcoming machine so incredible that it utterly destroyed sales of their current model, causing the company to go bankrupt before the new computer could ever hit the market.
Apple should just put the iPhone front facing cameras and sensors in the Mac computers
i think they are too thick for laptops. also they require apple silicon for image processing
Still one of the few youtubers who is honest, has a very short intro and doesnt lie about sponsored apps.
I love how Marques blends into the webcam when he talks about it
Marques: "Which is great because you can use it in a room with "

Marques nails another review. I'm in the market for an iMac and this update is very tempting with its 10-core option. It's so nice to have an expert lay out all the issues to consider before buying a new machine. Thanks! (again)
The T2 will be phenomenal for H265 though, at least, even though it doesnt have AMD damnit
Totally true but the relationship with AMD won't be going anywhere soon. I imagine the mac pros even with intel silicon will allow for GPU upgrades and all of these arm based macs should still support e-GPUs. Yes they won't be included in the laptop but I doubt apple will cut out support for those that will need more graphics horsepower on the go. Thunderbolt 4 is also scheduled but unfortunately doesn't increase bandwidth/speed. Hopefully thunderbolt 5 will so that people can finally get full performance from External GPU setups.

MKBHD: The Last Intel Mac VS The Osborne Effect!
Me before watching the video: *WTF is Osborne effect?*
You’re not preaching to no one!! My BF kept his previous iMac for almost ten years. He was considering buying his new one but hadn’t considered the change in the processor... so you just convinced him to wait a couple of years to buy the new one and get a better deal and hopefully have another 10 years with it
Yess, Apple should definitely kill the fusion drive. Love the turn around transition.
been using my macbook pro for like 7 years, i feel attacked.
*3minutes 23 seconds in the background is a new iMac MKBHD covered with black cloth!*
4:55 "Now you can use a mac with windows behind you" made Bill Gates very angry.
I enjoyed what was said about the potential last of the Intel iMacs. I like what Apple has done internally and if this is the last of these Intel based iMacs, I may move forward and purchase one. (:
3:58: Actually, the first difference I noticed in the video was that the glass around the screen seemed to be an odd, very pure black, which would usually be a bit more reflective and, well, less of a pure ventablack-like colour. The bezel is so dark, that I wouldn't be surprised if the pixel data of it was entirely (0, 0, 0). I'm not sure I've ever seen such a pure black background for a screen before.
8:28: I actually do like using my electronics for as long as possible. I look at electronics news more for entertainment than actually purchasing things, because it's really fun to see what's new but often my current electronics work perfectly fine, especially those that can be upgraded. My phone is from 2014 and my PC was built in 2016 with a CPU, motherboard, and RAM from about 2009.
Since I don't have that much money, I also love to get things used that used to be top of the line (or just really high end) at some point, but which are now much cheaper (like my CPUs, Intel Xeon X5560s, that originally cost over $1000 each but cost $30 for both when I bought them in 2016). A few years after the last Intel Mac is made, it may be interesting to buy one of them and have the best possible Intel/Mac machine, or, if/when Intel becomes obsolete in PCs in general, to buy the best possible Intel machine available period. I really love old hardware that used to be expensive but is now dirt cheap, because that means I can have something that is the best in its class in at least _one_ category.
So, I don't think you're preaching to nobody... though to be fair, I wasn't in the market for a Mac anyway, because self-built Linux PCs can last quite a bit longer while still staying lightning fast. Not that Macs aren't good Linux machines either, though. I originally switched to Gentoo Linux on my 2007 MacBook 3,1 around 2015, since Linux had much better game support due to being updated much more than Mac OS X 10.6.8, while also being faster than Mac OS X 10.6.8, and MUCH faster than Mac OS X 10.7.2 (which was really slow on my old MacBook compared to 10.6.8).
But the point is, one can still be a tech enthusiast interested in learning about all the latest gadgets, without necessarily actually buying them. Tech is really fun, but I have no need to stress the environment and my wallet actually _buying_ everything when my existing technology still works great and nice channels like yours let me see all the latest stuff too :) .
4:42 'you can use the I mac in room with windows behind you.' Bill Gates was triggered!
I got my 27-inch iMac in 2015 and I still LOVE it. I did add some memory (now 24 GB DDR3) and I own a handful of external hard drives but otherwise it has been a powerhouse for everything from gaming to video editing, music creation, and more. I would happily wait a year or two for a Apple Silicon and a redesign.
We have an 20" early 2008 iMac happily chugging along as our home server. I never gets shut down.
It doesn't know it's old because we did tell it. Some things are better left unsaid.
