Instead of destroying instruments, why dont they donate equipment to music schools. Hell, its tax deductible too.

My guess would be some legal reason. Whatever the issue was Gibson doesn't want this guitar out in the world where it could be resold and possibly tarnish their (cough) "stellar" reputation.

Insurance won’t pay out for damaged property without it being destroyed. Once had to throw away 400 sq ft of hardwood flooring because of a finish problem.

From Leo: Shawn's skills are well showcased in this video. You clearly are a craftsman in this trade. It was good to watch. I saw Brads video when he found the guitar. I always thought they had found out it was a counterfeit chibson and did not want to perpetuate the fraud. Plus as a counterfeit, any time spent is worth more than a chibson.

So the real thing that happens is: if a guitar arrives broken, its not Gibsons fault, its technically the shippers fault but they wouldn’t take accountability. Gibson wont cover anything once its already bought for the store. So being that this particular guitar is only a tribute model, it just becomes a loss to the store and its up to the store if they want to try to fix it and sell it at a loss and have it sit there forever or take it apart for spare parts and throw away the damaged wood and make sure it cant be used again. So in reality its like they only lose a couple hundred but its worked into the loss budget and the guitar just doesn’t exist to them (inventory wise)

Back in 2010 I bought a Parker PM20 off ebay for $175. The guitar had fallen over and the top of the broke off at the nut - and was lost - fretboard was still intact. It took me a long time to figure out how to fix it, but I eventually cleaned up the fracture , gorilla glued wood patches and carved to match the Parker. Still have it today.

Awesome video again Shawn on that beautiful guitar, looking forward to the next vido on the bodywork. Got to tell ya, you have some serious skills with the bandsaw shaping that nice open book contour. Love what you're doing. Just like you i love to rescue violins, acoustic guitars, electric guitars and electric basses that needs some TLC. I bent down a krooked neck on a 5-string bass once with a steamiron and it worked like a charm. After that the trussrod worked like it was supposed to again. 😉I just love My Gibson Les Paul. The setup is so good and it plays great. Have a nice day you're awesome! ~Rob🎸

Sean, so much fun!!! Cut that neck out of blank like a BOSS!! Appreciate the fretboard lifting how-to. I use a similar technique to flatten out warped pickguards right on the ironing board. Only takes a couple of lightly firm presses with the hot steam iron, with the pickguard sandwiched in between a couple of terry cloths or towels. Works amazingly well. I always learn great tips from your projects. Thanks to you both for the videos!

The 'inventory problem' is probably a flaw, damage, or warrantee issue of new stock that Gibson doesn't want to repair. So, to save shipping costs in a Return to Vendor, they require the damage you see documenting the serial number, and Guitar Center was issued a credit or replacement.

  • @Edward1312

Love what you have done with that guitar Sean and the final product and this video proves you are a competent woodworker! So glad to see the scar guitar is now playing and doing what it was suppose to be doing i.e sounding and looking great. Getting that neck off took brute force! Makes you realise that not all guitar making/repairing is subtle, that bandsaw was pretty heavy duty as well (however, manipulating the wood around it and the router took some skills and experience no doubt)

GC does not do that. This guitar would have been sent back to Gibson. They cut it up in 7 pieces and dumped in 6 different dumpsters that are emptied on different days. The head stock will be saved by Gibson with the serial number. I worked at GC as a manager. I know they are not allowed to do this. Somebody else dumped it but why in a GC dumpster, I don't know. Maybe it was an employees guitar.

Guitar Center destroying these guitars sounds Sounds more like an insurance claim to me.

I would guess the Gibson legal department advises them not to donate them due to risk factors. Yes that's how stupid litigation is in the United States these days. But I'm just guessing.

Would have been cool of he made it like the "headless" SG that someone made cuz of a broken headstock but the break was pretty good for a repair

this is an absolute travesty. criminal. somewhere a poor student could've really appreciated it and learned on it. I quit doing business with guitar center years ago, and will never do business with them again. thanks for saving this one, Sir! HOOYAH!

I ran into this a few times when I was a guitar tech with them many years ago. They'd want us to do this sometimes even if a guitar just fell off a hanger and got damaged. I rescued most of them, though. Had to do some crazy repairs a few times.
