Hi guys, welcome back to the South LA Recap. Today we're looking at a brief and general history of John C. Fremont High School. This conflicting history dig will span from 1924 to present day, and center on how this school shaped the neighborhood around it.
Special thanks to two viewers who inspired this: Juan Sanchez, who started this conversation; and Gerson Argueta.
John C. Fremont High School has a long-ranging history that in no way can be covered in a few minutes. There are also several nuances of information that I don't have access to, and are limited to John C. Fremont High School yearbooks.
However, this short documentary is supported by clippings from older newspapers, including the California Eagle and Daily News.

Love your videos. But please stop referring to Latinos as Latinx. Stop trying to Anglicize our Spanish language. Us Latinos don’t like it. Otherwise, keep up the good videos.

And I appreciate your comment, really. I've been corrected on Latina/o before, and have read "Latinx" in academia, but I'm now learning that it's not so cut in dry. I definitely want to make sure that I'm respectful to everyone, and this is definitely a lesson for me.

This is the place I call home. My parents, aunts, and uncles went here. So I will always have pride attending this school.

I love John C.Fremont High School in Los Angeles, class of 1982.
My grandparents met at Fremont and fell in love and eventually got married. Our family home was also up the street. Love the videos. Keep them coming!

Of course I stuck around for the full thing. It's always good to learn about our past no matter how ugly it is. I also like to know "who went to the school" or who lived in the area.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I have a subscription to Newspapers.com, which helped a lot. The Los Angeles Public Library has a similar free version called Press Reader, but it doesn’t have as many available articles
Interesting. My dad taught English at Thomas Alva Edison Junior High School between 1927 and 1960. Used to go with him on Howdy Days so I wouldn’t have to stay home alone all day. We lived near ABC TV Studios, now Prospect Studios.

Eric, did you know that the Goodyear plant had a blimp hanger at the corner of Florence and Central? When I was a kid we always used to watch to see if the blimp was out of the hanger on the mooring mast.

Thanks for making this video. Found out some things I didn't know. As a Fremont alumni (c/o 200) I do question why Raymond Washington would be named as an alumni and described as the CRIP's co-founder. Feels like he's seen as hero being listed with professional athletes. He did change his message towards the end of his life so maybe it's better to describe him a former gang leader turned good and tried to prevent youth from joining gangs.

With all the new programs and improved educational system I belive fremont is a much needed school for all minorities living in this area .
When I was there it was racial
Hispanics vs blacks
But as a latino my self I believe it was up to everyone to make that choice as for us we kept to ourselves and focused on graduating. I took mechanics with Mr Gray a true HERO 👍! He was like our uncle always there for his students he had been there for so many years , our team won the engine competition out in the quad by the lunch area it was an engine we built on our own and even painted it we had to wear orange shirts to match our engine 👍 best senior year ever .. thanks Mr Gray !!! Our names are written in air brush on our wooden placard on the wall 😀..

Mr Gray had a saying anytime one of us was acting bad he would say
"If you'll lie you'll steal and if you'll steal you'll kill."
And with those few words he got all of our attention!
I took auto shop all 3 years I was there cause he gave me hope of making it out here during all the bull.. the riots ! The gangs ! The drugs ! Poverty !
Look at South Central now we have 711s in the hood 🤯, condos and new schools where old factories used to be , it ain't what it was when I grew up and the ones who will benefit from this will be our kids . Thanks for bringing back so many great memories.. ✌
@@SouthLARecap My cousin goes to freemont and he said gangs are still very active around there and you got Gang tensions and kids are still poor too. I will say the School tries to help the students more since there is more funding being sent by the LAUSD
I was close to going Fremont high when it was bad Fremont was always known as a gang banger full of drive-bys robberies. Fremont reminded me of the movie Lean on me Eastside high. Now Fremont looks like a everyday ordinary School it's been cleaned up. Still had a lot of friends that went to Fremont me I was lucky to go to manual arts even though it's still a tough School full of g gangsters. But it is what it is good video.

There was a lot controversy before they even opened it's doors this should be a great story if you can find the history it's hard finding things if you only have Google and basic search engines

@@SouthLARecap Just watched a small documentary about it. I was amazed about the history.
You should have spoken about Fremont High's black power struggles in the mid-1960s. Black students went on strike and also protested against the Vietnam War at Fremont. The school was briefly closed. Read Mike Davis's book 'L.A. in the 1960s' for a good analysis of black protests at Fremont and other high school protests by Chicano and Asia students in the LAUSD. Otherwise, great vlogging here!

I live in south la as a Korean American almost for 9 years now. Graduated from Francisco bravo medical magnet Hs in 2021. Why don’t you do a video on manual art hs?
Raymond Washington, the leader of the crips gang, attended that school.
He created the Crips at that school
You forgot to mention the struggles that us Latinos had to go through in the 80s and 90s, when the demographics started shifting and, lets just say, that didn't sit well with many in the community. I witnessed many racial riots throughout my 3 years there (88-91). Not a peep of that ever gets mentioned, like it never happened. Those who were there remember.
Thanks for cheating this, Jaime. In a lot of this research I’m learning about things that happened for the first time-and sometimes I miss things to when the bulk of the story is based on newspaper archives.
Let me know if you have any other resources on this. I’d really like to learn about it. Perhaps I can even highlight it in another video if we can get our hands on some supporting evidence

Some Slausons whooped on LAPD and knocked out several of them, on Fremont's front lawn. This was in the late 50s.
Things were going good until Crips and Florencia 13 got hold of the school
Never mind all your research. Just see the bigger picture. NO MORE SLAVERY. What's wrong with sticking to your own people. Building your own school. At least you have rights not chained up.

Garbage school. Was there between 97-99. Was there not too long ago in a teacher prep program. It's still pretty bad, the teachers are trying but there's too much for them to tackle. Black peeps have it pretty bad, there's definitely a bias just as there was at dorsey high when I attended. I figured it has to do with the community, private businesses don't support black people, they don't hire blacks and they definitely don't treat them the same. The eagle has a ton of articles regarding black support and unfortunately black peeps are hardly ever on the receiving end when it comes to help.
Thanks for Joseph. There’s definitely a lot that needs to be done for our schools. It take a community to build them, but it can be hard without district support, and without the support of educators who live in the community.
They’ve seem to made strides with the sub schools, but still, the results I posted are acceptable to the district.
@@SouthLARecap that's something that I did notice, my brother attended a charter school but I can't say that it was better. The size of their campus lacks school spirit. This might sound kinda silly but dorsey high didn't lack school spirit.
Charters made it possible for fremont to have a traditional schedule, i believe that the year round system caused so many people to drop out.
I believed that together we could fix our communities but it's time consuming. People get exhausted of walkouts, strikes, unexpected results. I know I did, found out it's actually cheaper to move into a better neighborhood.
@@josephrmayhew nah it ain’t like that no more. If you want a job you can get it don’t make this racial because Whites are 1% of the population in South Central so its majority POC, if you don’t work hard you won’t get a job simple as that don’t blame it on anyone.
@@Reyes-Latinos how is it not? Walk down broadway between manchester and slauson, the hispanic owned businesses only hire hispanics. The former Tapatío had maybe two black employees, el super isn't that much better. You get a different perspective depending on how you are treated. You hold resentment based on the negative experiences, it's definitely about race and never did I bring up white peeps in my comments. I still have family in south LA, i was at fremont about two years ago for a teacher prep program. To say that it isn't like that anymore is a lie, I asked students what an issue they deal with, their answer was gangs. One of the issues we had back in 97, walking down 78th st having to watch your back, hoping some gang members didn't jump you for no reason.
@@josephrmayhew foo Ik i still live here I’m on 25th and Central RIGHT NOW! Gangs are still a big part of the community and it affects everyone. We came from another country which has poorer conditions and still built something in America how is that our fault? All I hear is complaining, if you can’t qualify for a job then you’re not gonna get it simple as that. Being bilingual is very important since Latinos are everywhere and need people to be able to communicate well. When these neighborhoods were 90% Black you guys found another way to blame someone else. I don’t know why you’re bringing race to this when every black kid in South Central has a higher chance to get killed by another black man and that goes for my people also I’m statistically more likely to get killed by another Latino. Where do you see us complain? More Latinos get killed by cops in LA then anyone else but you don’t see us crying we work hard and so do Black folks most of my coworkers are black but you need to stop with bs
1980 is not a lot especially for south la, im from san diego and we had 3000 kids with 1000 in my graduating class
