I spent two months in Quartzsite (Jan 6-March 10 2023) as a brand new nomad/vanlifer. I mainly wanted to experience RTR, meet new people, and I did. Everything you said was spot on. It's not for me past my one-time extended experience. It was mostly enjoyable, but one time was more than enough to check it off my list. I have no desire to return. It is what I call the "ugly" type of desert compared to other types of breathtaking desert landscapes out there. The few stores they have are ridiculously overpriced ($8 for a single bag of chips!). Some decent restaurants but nothing spectacular. I met a smorgasbord of interesting people. Not knocking QZ, but unless you are a "joiner" type (which I am not), one time was perfectly enough to say "been there, done that."
I agree. I have traveled, alone, over most of the western world over my lifetime. Except for my trip to Hawaii it is better to visit places via the virtual on-line world. As a fellow introvert, I enjoy lots of natural wonders virtually, and in person, but I don't find crowds, or cliques, or cultures, of people interesting - except as curiosities.
Agreed! I had a fantastic experience two years ago. I’m heading back Wednesday to meet people and I’m sure I’ll pass through Quartzite but I don’t think I’ll be staying in the immediate area. Found some beautiful areas down by Yuma up by Parker just fantastic and the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. I am from the north east in the mountains and we have some spectacular sunrises and sunsets as well. But to get away for six or eight weeks. Arizona desert works for me. Thanks for your time and putting this information together.

Great information! I’m an introvert and can’t tolerate large crowds, dust, overcrowded campsites and disrespectful ATV users. I would rather camp on a mountaintop any day!
As the world adds more and more people, at the rate it is, expect the mountain top to get more and more crowded. You really can’t get away from others. Not anymore. There’s no such thing as getting lost.
Really enjoying Quartzsite, my first year. However some dog owners think because it's the desert they don't have to pick up after their dogs. Not only have I been picking up after my dog but also the disrespectful people that don't. Remember the waste stays for a long time in AZ. What you think is no man's land may well be someone's future camp spot. Be responsible dog owners!!

@@GardenerEarthGuy Have seen some flies but totally manageable, and it only rains here once in awhile. And so far no Hep-C that I know of. If you are elderly and or unhealthy maybe not for you. But there are a lots of elderly (median age 75) and lots of very unhealthy looking people skulking around here.
I had a friend tell me about a restaurant once. Said it was always overcrowded, overpriced, and the food wasn't really that great. I tried it for myself, and had a wonderful experience. Point bein'... If you don't go and see for yourself, you ain't never going to really know.
Thank you for your video! Quartzsite needs a fair, but honest representation. All I heard was the hype of South and RTR, which is held at the city park, thankfully not La Posa South. I was curious, but here for one reason and one reason alone... putting away pension for a year in Alaska. I've been here since September 18 and plan to leave April 8. As for the town, I have made connections with very kind people, especially at Coyote Fresh Foods, the library and The Outpost. It isn't for everyone and how many people, especially in January/February, is a drawback. I lasted to mid-October and moved from La Posa South to Tyson Wash, with a handful of other campers. A few days before Christmas it is still not populated. I love it on this side, people are respectful of the quiet hours! I've only observed or experienced a few speeding blowing up horrible dust. At South, it was constant, making it much worse of an experience. At Tyson Wash sites are more off the side roads than South. There is a church service on Sundays, at South at the pavilion. I find the people to be a mix of welcoming and friendly. Many are rude and most are not. If you want your space, that will be respected, too. I am in a tent and used to the desert, but I have found camping in the desert and living in it required adjusting! Being a native CA dealing with Santa Ana winds all my life to mid 30s, I do not love the wind gusts, but I am in a tent. It is not regular, but can last for days. If you do not like the crowds and partying, avoid South. The people are often inconsiderate and exhibit inappropriate behaviors. The current camp host is basically absent from duties (the vault buildings were regularly out of toilet paper or cleaned. The last one, where I was, was vandalized twice in one month. The camp office was never opened to report and the ranger had to be called. For one week, the building was increasingly covered with feces and the second time lock due to vandalism, spray paint I believe. I also started to feel uneasy. There is a drug issue, meth, in the back areas of South. I was 1.5 miles in. There was a constant issue with someone screaming, conversationally, in the middle of the night, for hours. TRY TYSON WASH. I feel safer there. It is closer to the mountains, so the wind is far less. This year the cost is $180, and I've heard the cost for LTVA will be $300. North, East and South have a newly paved road to the water and dumpsters (South, not sure how far for the other two. Tyson is getting a new dump, a large one that is currently in process of completion. This may change the nature of Tyson Wash when open. Remember, with a permit you can go to any of the 7 sites, so going to South to fill up on water is convenient. The vendors that begin set up on November 1 (first day of town's official season) includes a discount grocer of nonperishable dry goods and other household, hygiene items, with phenomenal prices. The Walmart is in Parker, 37 miles away, keep in mind, it IS NOT close! The Post Office is awful, with the exception of one clerk America... the locals will roll their eyes, verifiable! If you enjoy rocks and gems, you will love Quartzsite. If you love history, you will enjoy Quartzsite's. There is a senior center with lunch and other activities, many churches and the laundromats are great, particularly the one on Central, past the Arizona Bank. Emmet's is not as friendly as told, one made me feel like I couldn't afford to have an oil change! So, I went to Parker instead. I also had to be towed for a flat tire and the AAA tow in Quartzsite is awesome! There are regular activities in town, yesterday evening was the Uke Christmas Concert. I attended the Quartzsite Fall Festival and had a great time. Not much with vendors, but great food trucks, two and the band was fabulous, Casandra Long's Band. She is an incredible versatile singer, and her band is really good! Quartzsite and Parker libraries are open four days a week, closed on Fri, Sa, Su! There is a new mail service people seem to like. I have rented a PO box; my mail service is in my domicile, and I rarely have mail. Yuma is 80 miles away and Buckeye 103. Buckeye has just about anything you would need, Walmart & Lowe's, restaurants & shopping, Bank of America. Keep in mind, as well, all of October may still have 100 degree weather... the area is gorgeous, with amazing sunrises and brilliant sunsets! The mountains never get old, nor does the night sky! This is just my experience, observation and of those I have met, both sides of the coin. Quartzsite La Posa is just like everywhere else, imperfect with flaws, deal breakers, fun and beauty.

I went to Quartzsite for the first time last year. I camped with a couple of different groups. It does encourage community. I enjoyed lots of live music, campfires and the most beautiful sunsets. It is worth a try.
What about the low life's that take advantage of your things when your site is vacant when you leave for shopping or trash or whatever. I've been told it's quite common practice.
Good question, think hippies, but some bluegrass, a few tunes I enjoyed like of Stevie Nicks. Me personally, I like a wide mix of 90s, 80s up to mid 2000s, some metal, rock, hip hop for when at a party., but, mostly they play music that you're more likely to toe tap to. Considering when I go for a couple of months at least, I have been wondering about how someone could put together silent parties out there so you can really see folks groove.That was my experience the few times I was in attendance. I attended the comradery, not the music for sure.@nemjazz

The American Southwest deserts aren't boring; they're _subtle._ Then again, the difference between boring and subtle can be pretty subtle, too. It's definitely not for everyone.
This 110%. The Sonoran Desert is one of the most diverse ecological systems on this continent. Quartzsite is a touristy place, so of course there will be less plants and trees to see but it’s not empty like how the Sahara Desert is presented in the media.
Brian you did hit it on the nose. Quartzite isn’t for everyone but you should go at least once. Quartzite is very quirky. You see a lot of different kinds of RVs, buses and vans and even people sleeping in their cars and tents. For the most part people there are very nice. I just got back from Quartzite a few days ago and this time of year it does get cold in the late night and early morning hours 17:0717:07 and when the sun comes up it warms right up. One thing I like about being in Quartzite is the sunsets they are beautiful. I don’t like crowds either so I just stay at my campsite. Plamosa RD is not that crowded and it’s right outside of Quartzite off of Central Ave and plamosa RD.
I've been going to Quartzsite for around 20 years now. I like late-Oct, all of Nov, early Dec to visit... skip all of January.... then maybe get a trip in during late Feb, early March. That's my winter camping season visiting Quartzsite, all for the same reasons - avoiding the crowds. Things to do while there - Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is close, and Cibola National Wildlife Refuge is a little further away along the Colorado River, but both are easy day trips. Watch the weather forecast and plan accordingly, and winter desert camping is really nice with mild daytime temps and cool evenings with a campfire. Enjoy and cheers. Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL

….well then the women’s rtr would be interesting for you….it’s the second week of January…bob wells program,classes,rig tours,free table, help needed and help offered boards, you can learn a lot and meet up for an hour or the whole day,then go off camp drink your tea or what have you and then pick the classes you want the next day….I stay all January as I have another group later in the month…ham radio guys,that’s a polite group….love it, I take off on my own in between….KOFA is my favorite….petraglyphs,crystal hunting and big horn sheep….the sky at night speaks for itself…not much shopping so bring your treats and some firewood…oh and a heater in the new year for sure…..I do shadow work out there and just listen to music.👀🇺🇸🕊
I like a campfire, but not much for the sitting-around life, shopping or crowds. Around here I like the Olympic beaches, northeast Washington mountains.
Great, informative video, as usual. My first "winter" of full time RVing, (January 2018) I found myself in Quartzite and was totally overwhelmed by the crowds. I only stayed a couple of nights before moving on to other more attractive (to me) parts of rural Arizona, where I continue to spend the winter months. I'm with you Brian on Quartzite. My first time there was 1998. Had fun but learned on subsequent visits to avoid the place in December, January and early February. I too love the desert but can certainly do without the crowds and noise of the ATV'S. Have a good holiday.
I HAVE to go to Quartzsite at least once in my lifetime. When I was 10, my mom, sister, and I, went to Mecca CA, via I-10. We went past Quartzsite and I wanted to stop so bad to see the quartz and other rocks. We didn't stop and I was so disappointed. I've never been on that section of I-10 ever again. That was 52 years ago.
Yes, I recommend it. For 30 years I wanted to visit the place I saw in my dad's videos, and it was very different from what I expected. Bring 2 or $300 to buy rocks and things made from rocks, and some extra load bearing capacity for buckets of raw white quartz. Be prepared for chilly weather.
I spent part of this past winter (December 2023 until mid-January 2024) near Quartzsite (Plomosa Road)....where it wasn't crowded at all (met up with three other solo female vanlifers there)....first couple of nights I stayed at an LTVA and it was crowded (was "greeted" by naked people playing frisbee and nearly drove into a saguaro lol😂). One thing I would like to mention....the employees in both markets (Roadrunner and Coyote I think is the other one) are VERY helpful and friendly and always provided service with a smile, which I really appreciate. That being said, as someone else Commented, for me, once is enough. Yes it's inexpensive for us snowbirds but after Q I went to Lake Havasu City where I boondocked for free for the remainder of the winter.

More mountains and coastline and family is what myself and my wife of 38 years seek. Don't have full time plans we just go camping for a month at a time. We both retired in 2020 and purchased our second camper . We owned the first one from 1986 until 1992. Then returned to camping in 2020 for retirement. Love your channel !
I was in Quartzsite late Oct and early Nov. Wasn't extremely busy. They have added new awesome dump and water at Tyson Wells. LTVA 2023 $180. Moved to Imperial Dam less crowded.
@@jlions72 my 1st year here. Lots of rigs yet doesn't feel overwhelming. A pattern of 1-2 days per week extremely windy. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets. Abundant water/trash/dump. No showers currently. Should have brought my kayak.

I'm really surprised more people don't stay the winters in New Braunfels,Texas. The weather is about the same as Quartzsite Arizona. Beautiful landscape and long term visitor camp available.
Not too many good RV sites in New Braunfels itself, the one right on the river flooded last year I think. There is one next to the famous Buccees but it's usually full(ish). Might be better/more spots near Canyon Lake though.
Quartzite is wonderful in my opinion. I love the mild weather first of all. It does get windy and dusty, but the wind against my camper is soothing to my personality. I've camped at a few LTVA and I went deep to find a more seculded spot to camp. Plus there are tons of other free camping area that are close to Quartzite. I like to camp at the LTVA at Imperial Dam down towards Yuma but it is across the Colorado River in California. I love to go to Algonnes Mexico for my dental; medications and eye glasses because they are so much cheaper. You can make your visit what you want it to be. If you have a relaxed attitude and are flexible, then you will enjoy it. For me the positives far outweigh the negatives; but I have very few negatives. Oh, I love the big tent and all the vendors. I love to see what they have. I like to move at a slow pace taking it all in. So the best way to know is to experience it for yourself; you may find that you love the unique setting. Quartzite has it's own charm and and I love it.❤❤
As I spent last winter in Quartsite, I KNOW you are telling the truth. It wasn’t for me as I am an introvert and socially awkward. Food prices were crazy. The wind/sand storms were nuts! It got down to 17 degrees. I am missing the sunrises and sunsets. I think if I had an offroad vehicle to explore I would have had a better time.
The crowd at Brian's meetup was the whole reason I was planning on going this year. I went to the first one and met so many nice people. My only reason to go now is to drop stuff off at the rtr free pile. Best advice I can give for going to quartzite is to bring all the food you are going to need for the whole visit then go elsewhere for a resupply.

I went for 2 weeks in early Dec, my 3rd year. I'm done with it, dust and me don't work anymore plus the amenities suck, $11 now for showers! I've chosen to winter in Wickenburg, 5 min from town with all amenities I need, snap fitness for shower especially!
I always thought that I would go to the RTR but never made it. Now I suspect I would not have that goal. If I go, having seen countless videos on Quartzsite… I feel like I have been there and know I would not enjoy it. The videos are great and another reason to allow filming in National Parks so those of us who don’t hike well can enjoy them.
Yuck! I’m one of those people who think the desert is blah. Like camping in an open parking lot on dirt. I was in AZ a month or so ago and about the only area I enjoyed was Flagstaff Sedona and Grand Canyon. I need some trees. The crowds would also drive me nuts.
I think you got across to the audience what is happening in January. I've been there during that time a couple times, mainly to find out what it's all about when the show is on. The only reason I would go again in January when all the vendors are there is to find short term work to defray expenses if I wanted to travel full time, or to tune in to some of the full timers about what they consider to be the highlights of the full time experience. I live in Las Vegas so I really don't have to go anywhere to avoid the winter. I grew up in North Dakota, so I fully understand why people in cold, snowy climates want to get away for a few months in winter. I don't know of any other places that have the long stay areas at such inexpensive prices. Once you're staying in one of those places, you can take the opportunity to explore the whole Southwest in your camper. I think that is one of the main reasons go. The other reason that you already mentioned is the social experience. I think this is the main reason extroverts like it. introvert probably avoid that like the plague. Thanks for explaining it all. It might save some people the trip. To others it may be a reason for them to go.
Very informative. I am a roof tent camper and I have camped near places with lots of UTVs and definitely not my thing. I camp to disconnect and recharge most people doing the UTV off roading are drinking and riding up to 3 am or sometimes all night which defeats the purpose of me going there. So I will definitely will swing by one day but to look at the place since but that is a hard pass for me. Thank you for sharing this content
The Rubber Tramp Rendezvous reminds me a lot of Burning Man in that I never knew there were scores of people camping out for a week in the middle of the desert just for the experience. Love that this happens. Much respect to all that attend these events.
For me the main draw to the area is the OHV/ATV riding. Not a fan of crowds, so February. Also it might involve more driving down a bumpy road, but you can generally find a camp spot far away from neighbors. They also have a 2 week fee IIRC, which may be worth it over the free spots (for short stays) as you do get dump stations, water, garbage.
Been to Q twice now for the RTR and enjoyed it both times. This year going to stay on for the Big Tent RV show and the Gem show. I agree about the crowds, post office and grocery stores crazy in the afternoons, but I just get out earlier in the day to avoid the worst of the crowds. Also, stock up, do your laundry etc, before you get there. The desert and mountains are beautiful and the people are friendly.
I live in Quartzsite, AZ full-time. It is quiet in the summer! Our nearest big shopping is 17 miles to Blythe, CA, where you can shop at Albertson's and Smart & Final. It's also a better choice to avoid crowds for dining during our peak season mid-January to mid-February.

Quartzsite sounds awesome. I've been on the fence about buying an older (but nice) class a motorhome but was surprised to find out how much rv parks charge to stay on a monthly basis. $175 to dry camp for 7 months sounds ideal. Then I can stay wherever I want for the other 5 months while traveling around. Now my only decision is Beaver, Safari, Foretravel or Newell. Thanks for the info.
This is my 5th year of Quartzsite. I always stay in LaPosa west and generally enjoy my time here. That said every point you made is 100% valid. Going to miss your interesting presentation at the RTR this year but totally understand your reasoning.
I"m currently in the Q. It's been 2 yrs since I've been here. Used to camp in Scandon Wash however this year I thought I would try an LTVA. I have to say the convenience of water and trash is nice, but, it's getting busy, i.e. lines. Data connection has slowed tremendously since the crowds have increased. I have a booster so it's working well, so far. I have to say that the LTVA thing is much like living in a neighborhood. There are generators running most of the day (kinda like lawn mowers) and dogs barking often, along with OHV's driving by and generating dust as they wave at you. Each morning you can hear the wake up pulse of everyone, i.e. dogs/generators/OHVs/cars. You can still hear the traffic from Hwy 95 and in some cases from Hwy 10. I used to go to Parker and shop at Walmart, but, due to fuel prices this year, I'm now looking at shopping locally. There's not 1 place that has the best prices, there are multiple places to get the best price and that includes some of the vendors at the flea market and the show. However when you factor in fuel and time it kinda works out to shop locally and cruise around outside instead of playing dodgeball at Walmart. Just me, but summer looks more appealing than winter. I know, I know it's freaking hot. But no one is here and that's really compelling. I know... Overall the temps are wonderful and I avoid the traffic by driving around on smaller neighborhood roads.
You were both Fair, Honest & Firm. I'll be going there next winter after my van build is done. I've been to Slab City once & never going back there again.
Wind mostly blows south west(unless it's stormy) so stay on the other side of it, and the dust is okay. You can find solitude if thats what you want but you need to drive far down the dusty roads to get away. Closest Walmart and chain stores in Parker Az about 35 miles away.
My Grandparents and friends were going to Quartzite before it was named hat. In fact they could have named it! They named themselves Snowbirds. There was an article published in our local newspaper to that effect. This was in the early 50's or so. The tradition continued with my dad into the 1990's when he passed away.
I’m in a quandary. As a single older woman, I don’t like the idea of being camped in a remote BLM site with no one else around. I have a dog, but I can’t expect her to protect me. I’m a shy, introverted person though. I want the social aspect, meeting people, making friends, but I’m not the sort of person to barge up to a group of people who all seem to know each other and introduce myself. I’m an outsider who doesn’t really want to be an outsider, but whenever I’ve joined social groups, conversation remains at the superficial chit chat, small talk level.
I'm just like you! Sometimes I hear the laughter and chatter around a nearby campfire and I'd like to carry my chair over and plunk it down in the middle of their party. But that's not me. If I wanted to socialize I would need to travel with a club with common interests and stick with it until I'm considered one of the gang. For right now, though, I just want to go where I want to go. I had a lot of superficial chitchats with older, introverted, single women travelers with dogs in Quartzsite. Think about who we are, where we are, and what we're doing, and it makes sense.
I’d say try. I’m a bit socially awkward. Do love ppl but not crowds. Decided to move back small town Missouri. Nope! Found especially with elderly not as friendly as Az. Not at all. Wish I’d at least traveled here.
I spent last Season at the LTVA in Q and had a great time! The desert has its own beauty & awesome Sunrises & Sunsets. Love the open landscape. Dust.. Of course Wind..of course...its the desert. The RTR & Big tent does bring the crowds, however it was part of the whole experience.
I appreciate your information. I have been to Quartzsite and experienced weather and other obstacles I will return to court site this year only because I need service from my major manufacturer supplier that I can only get at these events. Otherwise quartzite is off my list. Thank you.
Living in Virginia,i traveled 3 yrs. ago out there & loved it. Met Bob Wells and some online others. Also loved Corpus Cristi Texas on my way there and back in my sienna van. Good to see you and thanks for the video . Proudly displaying your sticker on my van!
I went in 2017 to my first RTR. I was a solo camper and I met so many nice people. We started to tribe and go back every year. I'm an introvert. But I love the big tent because of all the free stuff they give you. I clean out my camper every year and put it in the RTR free pile at the town park. The classes were always interesting and always felt welcome. I go back every year. It is my vacation out of the cold. I love the peace in quiet of the desert in the sunsets our spectacular. Makes you appreciate nature. I'm glad to have met you in 2018 and enjoy your videos. You do you boo.❤ Happy trails!

Hello! Thank you so much for your candid review of Quartzite! I am currently just a weekend warrior for van camping, and have only recently learned about Quartzite and RTR. As an introvert (who can sometimes "moonlight" as an extrovert Lol), I am interested in at least going once to check it out. For me, I think staying a bit away from the crowds for camping, then coming into Q proper for any fun things would be the best. Also, I thank you for pointing out the one thing that would be the biggest draw for me... seeing all the Quartz/Quartzite mineral specimens, and maybe doing some rockhounding on my own! Not sure why it did not dawn on me that is why the town is named that! LOL! I read a bunch of the comments for this video, and one person stated they have a 3 day list of places they set aside to see all the things available, I think this is a FANTASTIC idea, and I will start thinking of places to visit with 3 days in mind; and I am figuring that Quartzite and RTR would fit well into that frame for me. As a woman, I would also like to check out the Women's only RTR as well. Thank you again for such a wonderful, honest review. It was very helpful. I've always fancied the idea of visiting the RTR, but I'd have to do it as a day visitor. Perhaps stay at a camp away from the main event with like minded quiet folks like myself.
You skipped over theft. Several people have had things stolen, car windows smashed and things in campsites missing. We have always travelled with a well trained guard dog that can be very aggressive if needed but controllable, if you didn't know you couldn't tell he was aggressive. We stay out away from everyone and move if someone pulls in close.

I lived there back in 1976, I was 18. I loved it then, my first time living away from home. I grew up in Yuma and spent a lot of time in the mountains around there. It was really different back in the 1970’s. People weren’t as much aware of the “gem in the desert” at that time! Thank you for the “trip down memory lane”! WOW! It sure has changed!
i spent a week camping around quartzsite Feb 2022. It was ok but I found Lake Havasu city was more my speed. I bounced around every 2 weeks till April.
When I retire in a few years I would not mind spending some time there. To see how it goes. Plus it’s cheap so a good way to save money for a few months. Good info 👍🏼
For short periods, I enjoy the hustle & bustle of Q during the busiest winter season (especially HOWA's RTR and camping with groups of friends.) As was mentioned in the video, the key to getting any business done in Q is to get there at dawn, when 90% of the winter visitors are still sleeping. And there is a workaround for the crowded public campsites near Q. There is plenty of uncrowded dispersed camping in areas a short distance away, such as Ehrenberg and Bouse. So with a little planning, it is possible to enjoy the best of both world's in the Q area during the busy season.
You are correct, of course. However, what you are suggesting takes a slight amount of effort more of thinking things through. You can have the things you want,, add access to the things that you need, but you might need to think things through for yourself Instead of relying on TH-cam.
In the 90s I lived in Phoenix. My dad was retired and used to travel around the country in an old van and explore and mine gold. He loved hunting through old mines and tailing piles looking for missed gold, artifacts, etc. He used to live in Quartzite during part of the year. My girlfriend and I used to drive out for the day to visit him and walk around all the flea markets. My father passed away in 2019 but every time I hear about Quartzite I always remember him.
I was stationed in Yuma at Marine Coprs Air Station back in 1968-69 and used to drive up to Blythe and Quartzite just for something to do. I loved the desert. I was in a Hawk Missle Battalion, 5th LAAMB, and spent many a month deployed in the desert. It was an oven in the day and a deep freeze at night. I did love the area though. The desert has a beauty you soon learn to appreciate. There were few snow birds back then...we called them scissorbills. Good video.
I think you nailed it! This is my third year in Quartzsite, but I’m moving around the area a bit more this year. I plan to avoid the busy part of the year, but thoroughly enjoyed the socializing earlier in the season, even though I’m socially awkward too. The LTVA pass, which I have, is also valid at Imperial Dam near Yuma, which is where I plan to escape from Quartzsite while it’s busy.

Drove to check out imperial dam LTVA last year and we were in awe how packed it was Man It was worse than La Posa South Before the LTVA was packed all over too
Very accurate review. I am a middle-class truck camper with a SXS. I'm from Ca. and it's nice they let you drive on the street at least when I was there a couple years ago.
Found lifelong friends at RTR and loved camping with the beautiful sunsets, clear skies ,warmth,stars and campfires. My fondest memories! I hope to get back again one of these years.
Many years ago (90's) I drove past Quartzite on the way to Phoenix. I thought, why are all these people out here? What do they do? Why do they come to camp out here in the dirt? I have since learned, but definitely know its not for me. Thanks for taking the time to give a good description so newbies can hopefully figure out if its their style. Like cruises, I know its not my style.
I love spending the winter in the desert. Especially the spring time. Summer not so much, I usually leave no later than May, for the mountains. Love the wildflowers in the spring.
I'm socially awkward too and agree with your negatives, with that being said I'm heading there right now. Seems like something you have to experience at least once. 🙂

Thank you for the veracity about Quartzsite. I am here right now at an RV park from August 22 to Sept 24, 2024. It is a hot deserted ghost town. The few hundred residents bunker down in their air-con modular homes. There is no visible industry so I don't fathom why people live here. Maybe they earn million$ from tourists in winter and that's their annual revenue. --- I am a born-and-bred Mojave Desert sunbird so I sit outside and ride bicycle on empty roads under 110° sun. I love Quartzsite in its stoic state, but am curious about the rambunctious January. If I'm in the area then, I'll pop in for a while. I don't know what to think of snowbirds. Do they really despise snow so much to spend months in a lowly desert? --- So I'll tell readers about summer in Quartzsite. It is quiet, and for sure hot. You have to love heat! (I do). --- I visited La Posa but it was empty, no water or dump station. All that opens up Sept 15, but there might not even be a dozen boondockers. Night temps will drop to mid-70s by the Autumn Equinox, and maybe highs in the 90s. --- There are no dog-and-pony shows or 2nd amendment exhibitionists during summer. The derelicts who do those things wither away on the sidewalk near Dollar store resting on a Trump placard, but don't panhandle because everybody is on EBT. --- Fast food places are barren, although truckers patronize Pilot and Love's, so those venues are somewhat lively. --- Shopkeepers give me the time of day, especially if I'm the only patron. Prices are dirt cheap. Rob's Bakery was open one day, and I was his second of two customers that day. Cal at Cal's Custom Creations talked to me for 30 minutes uninterrupted. Nice person. And the Visitor's Bureau gave me more information than I could absorb. A junk shop called A Little Of Everything closes early in summer when patronage, if any, disappears. --- From what Brian says in the video, snowbirds cluster with their own clan. I'm familiar with group-think and monetary-divide. As a Burning Man veteran where co-habitation is emphasized, I don't think I can handle closed RV circles. --- Conversely, as aforementioned, I'll drop in if I'm in the area during January, give it a try.
Quartsite was one of our overnight stays on our way to Mexico. One year we noticed a problem with our wheels on our trailer and went to RV Lifestyles RV Repair. We were told to return early the next morning and they fixed things and we were on our way by noon. I highly recommend them if your need repairs while there.
I went to Quartzite in late October just to check it out, staying only a week. I spent two nights at Love's and three nights at various spots. I think you covered the negative points quite well. One, there is little to no shaded areas to park and get out of direct sunlight that even in the fall is quite annoyingly hot. Two, the prices at the grocery stores were jacked up to unreasonable levels. Ice, for example was outrageously high. Three, the dust and dirt infiltrated my van interior to the point I was constantly cleaning my counter surfaces. My clothes appeared discolored by the dust. Four, my van is a RWD vehicle an driving on many of the dirt road access to camping areas was not comfortable. A positive was the price of gas for my van. It was much cheaper than the prices here in California. Another positive were some of the people I met.
That’s why many love it around this part of AZ Lots of sun to keep our solar pumping along. Yeah deserts are dusty Comes with the territory It’s a small small town prices in these towns will always be jacked up but still cheaper than CA groceries That’s a plus 👍

I stop in Quartzsite Az. when ever I go to the phoenix area, To fly my radio control airplanes at the park field. The people of Quartzsite have always been very friendly and helpful. I hope to go back next year for their model plane swapmeet and airshow.
I spent two months in Quartzsite (Jan 6-March 10 2023) as a brand new nomad/vanlifer. I mainly wanted to experience RTR, meet new people, and I did. Everything you said was spot on. It's not for me past my one-time extended experience. It was mostly enjoyable, but one time was more than enough to check it off my list. I have no desire to return. It is what I call the "ugly" type of desert compared to other types of breathtaking desert landscapes out there. The few stores they have are ridiculously overpriced ($8 for a single bag of chips!). Some decent restaurants but nothing spectacular. I met a smorgasbord of interesting people. Not knocking QZ, but unless you are a "joiner" type (which I am not), one time was perfectly enough to say "been there, done that."
I agree. I have traveled, alone, over most of the western world over my lifetime. Except for my trip to Hawaii it is better to visit places via the virtual on-line world. As a fellow introvert, I enjoy lots of natural wonders virtually, and in person, but I don't find crowds, or cliques, or cultures, of people interesting - except as curiosities.
Agreed! I had a fantastic experience two years ago. I’m heading back Wednesday to meet people and I’m sure I’ll pass through Quartzite but I don’t think I’ll be staying in the immediate area. Found some beautiful areas down by Yuma up by Parker just fantastic and the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. I am from the north east in the mountains and we have some spectacular sunrises and sunsets as well. But to get away for six or eight weeks. Arizona desert works for me. Thanks for your time and putting this information together.

Really enjoying Quartzsite, my first year. However some dog owners think because it's the desert they don't have to pick up after their dogs. Not only have I been picking up after my dog but also the disrespectful people that don't. Remember the waste stays for a long time in AZ. What you think is no man's land may well be someone's future camp spot. Be responsible dog owners!!

Thank you for your video! Quartzsite needs a fair, but honest representation. All I heard was the hype of South and RTR, which is held at the city park, thankfully not La Posa South. I was curious, but here for one reason and one reason alone... putting away pension for a year in Alaska. I've been here since September 18 and plan to leave April 8. As for the town, I have made connections with very kind people, especially at Coyote Fresh Foods, the library and The Outpost. It isn't for everyone and how many people, especially in January/February, is a drawback. I lasted to mid-October and moved from La Posa South to Tyson Wash, with a handful of other campers. A few days before Christmas it is still not populated. I love it on this side, people are respectful of the quiet hours! I've only observed or experienced a few speeding blowing up horrible dust. At South, it was constant, making it much worse of an experience. At Tyson Wash sites are more off the side roads than South. There is a church service on Sundays, at South at the pavilion. I find the people to be a mix of welcoming and friendly. Many are rude and most are not. If you want your space, that will be respected, too. I am in a tent and used to the desert, but I have found camping in the desert and living in it required adjusting! Being a native CA dealing with Santa Ana winds all my life to mid 30s, I do not love the wind gusts, but I am in a tent. It is not regular, but can last for days. If you do not like the crowds and partying, avoid South. The people are often inconsiderate and exhibit inappropriate behaviors. The current camp host is basically absent from duties (the vault buildings were regularly out of toilet paper or cleaned. The last one, where I was, was vandalized twice in one month. The camp office was never opened to report and the ranger had to be called. For one week, the building was increasingly covered with feces and the second time lock due to vandalism, spray paint I believe. I also started to feel uneasy. There is a drug issue, meth, in the back areas of South. I was 1.5 miles in. There was a constant issue with someone screaming, conversationally, in the middle of the night, for hours. TRY TYSON WASH. I feel safer there. It is closer to the mountains, so the wind is far less. This year the cost is $180, and I've heard the cost for LTVA will be $300. North, East and South have a newly paved road to the water and dumpsters (South, not sure how far for the other two. Tyson is getting a new dump, a large one that is currently in process of completion. This may change the nature of Tyson Wash when open. Remember, with a permit you can go to any of the 7 sites, so going to South to fill up on water is convenient. The vendors that begin set up on November 1 (first day of town's official season) includes a discount grocer of nonperishable dry goods and other household, hygiene items, with phenomenal prices. The Walmart is in Parker, 37 miles away, keep in mind, it IS NOT close! The Post Office is awful, with the exception of one clerk America... the locals will roll their eyes, verifiable! If you enjoy rocks and gems, you will love Quartzsite. If you love history, you will enjoy Quartzsite's. There is a senior center with lunch and other activities, many churches and the laundromats are great, particularly the one on Central, past the Arizona Bank. Emmet's is not as friendly as told, one made me feel like I couldn't afford to have an oil change! So, I went to Parker instead. I also had to be towed for a flat tire and the AAA tow in Quartzsite is awesome! There are regular activities in town, yesterday evening was the Uke Christmas Concert. I attended the Quartzsite Fall Festival and had a great time. Not much with vendors, but great food trucks, two and the band was fabulous, Casandra Long's Band. She is an incredible versatile singer, and her band is really good! Quartzsite and Parker libraries are open four days a week, closed on Fri, Sa, Su! There is a new mail service people seem to like. I have rented a PO box; my mail service is in my domicile, and I rarely have mail. Yuma is 80 miles away and Buckeye 103. Buckeye has just about anything you would need, Walmart & Lowe's, restaurants & shopping, Bank of America. Keep in mind, as well, all of October may still have 100 degree weather... the area is gorgeous, with amazing sunrises and brilliant sunsets! The mountains never get old, nor does the night sky! This is just my experience, observation and of those I have met, both sides of the coin. Quartzsite La Posa is just like everywhere else, imperfect with flaws, deal breakers, fun and beauty.

I went to Quartzsite for the first time last year. I camped with a couple of different groups. It does encourage community. I enjoyed lots of live music, campfires and the most beautiful sunsets. It is worth a try.

What about the low life's that take advantage of your things when your site is vacant when you leave for shopping or trash or whatever. I've been told it's quite common practice.

Good question, think hippies, but some bluegrass, a few tunes I enjoyed like of Stevie Nicks. Me personally, I like a wide mix of 90s, 80s up to mid 2000s, some metal, rock, hip hop for when at a party., but, mostly they play music that you're more likely to toe tap to. Considering when I go for a couple of months at least, I have been wondering about how someone could put together silent parties out there so you can really see folks groove.That was my experience the few times I was in attendance. I attended the comradery, not the music for sure.@nemjazz

I love camping period. One thing I love about dessert camping is the absence of insects / mosquitoes.
One thing I don’t like about camping in the desert are the rattlesnakes, rodents, spiders and scorpions. 😊

This 110%. The Sonoran Desert is one of the most diverse ecological systems on this continent. Quartzsite is a touristy place, so of course there will be less plants and trees to see but it’s not empty like how the Sahara Desert is presented in the media.
Brian you did hit it on the nose. Quartzite isn’t for everyone but you should go at least once. Quartzite is very quirky. You see a lot of different kinds of RVs, buses and vans and even people sleeping in their cars and tents. For the most part people there are very nice. I just got back from Quartzite a few days ago and this time of year it does get cold in the late night and early morning hours 17:07 17:07 and when the sun comes up it warms right up. One thing I like about being in Quartzite is the sunsets they are beautiful. I don’t like crowds either so I just stay at my campsite. Plamosa RD is not that crowded and it’s right outside of Quartzite off of Central Ave and plamosa RD.
I've been going to Quartzsite for around 20 years now. I like late-Oct, all of Nov, early Dec to visit... skip all of January.... then maybe get a trip in during late Feb, early March. That's my winter camping season visiting Quartzsite, all for the same reasons - avoiding the crowds. Things to do while there - Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is close, and Cibola National Wildlife Refuge is a little further away along the Colorado River, but both are easy day trips. Watch the weather forecast and plan accordingly, and winter desert camping is really nice with mild daytime temps and cool evenings with a campfire. Enjoy and cheers. Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL

….well then the women’s rtr would be interesting for you….it’s the second week of January…bob wells program,classes,rig tours,free table, help needed and help offered boards, you can learn a lot and meet up for an hour or the whole day,then go off camp drink your tea or what have you and then pick the classes you want the next day….I stay all January as I have another group later in the month…ham radio guys,that’s a polite group….love it, I take off on my own in between….KOFA is my favorite….petraglyphs,crystal hunting and big horn sheep….the sky at night speaks for itself…not much shopping so bring your treats and some firewood…oh and a heater in the new year for sure…..I do shadow work out there and just listen to music.👀🇺🇸🕊
I like a campfire, but not much for the sitting-around life, shopping or crowds. Around here I like the Olympic beaches, northeast Washington mountains.
Great, informative video, as usual. My first "winter" of full time RVing, (January 2018) I found myself in Quartzite and was totally overwhelmed by the crowds. I only stayed a couple of nights before moving on to other more attractive (to me) parts of rural Arizona, where I continue to spend the winter months. I'm with you Brian on Quartzite. My first time there was 1998. Had fun but learned on subsequent visits to avoid the place in December, January and early February. I too love the desert but can certainly do without the crowds and noise of the ATV'S. Have a good holiday.
I HAVE to go to Quartzsite at least once in my lifetime. When I was 10, my mom, sister, and I, went to Mecca CA, via I-10. We went past Quartzsite and I wanted to stop so bad to see the quartz and other rocks. We didn't stop and I was so disappointed. I've never been on that section of I-10 ever again. That was 52 years ago.

Yes, I recommend it. For 30 years I wanted to visit the place I saw in my dad's videos, and it was very different from what I expected. Bring 2 or $300 to buy rocks and things made from rocks, and some extra load bearing capacity for buckets of raw white quartz. Be prepared for chilly weather.
I spent part of this past winter (December 2023 until mid-January 2024) near Quartzsite (Plomosa Road)....where it wasn't crowded at all (met up with three other solo female vanlifers there)....first couple of nights I stayed at an LTVA and it was crowded (was "greeted" by naked people playing frisbee and nearly drove into a saguaro lol😂). One thing I would like to mention....the employees in both markets (Roadrunner and Coyote I think is the other one) are VERY helpful and friendly and always provided service with a smile, which I really appreciate. That being said, as someone else Commented, for me, once is enough. Yes it's inexpensive for us snowbirds but after Q I went to Lake Havasu City where I boondocked for free for the remainder of the winter.
I found the lake Havasu area to be much more enjoyable as well

More mountains and coastline and family is what myself and my wife of 38 years seek. Don't have full time plans we just go camping for a month at a time. We both retired in 2020 and purchased our second camper . We owned the first one from 1986 until 1992. Then returned to camping in 2020 for retirement. Love your channel !
I was in Quartzsite late Oct and early Nov. Wasn't extremely busy. They have added new awesome dump and water at Tyson Wells. LTVA 2023 $180. Moved to Imperial Dam less crowded.

It is in California. LTVA, closest town for resupply is Yuma, AZ about a 35 min drive.

I'm really surprised more people don't stay the winters in New Braunfels,Texas. The weather is about the same as Quartzsite Arizona. Beautiful landscape and long term visitor camp available.
Not too many good RV sites in New Braunfels itself, the one right on the river flooded last year I think. There is one next to the famous Buccees but it's usually full(ish). Might be better/more spots near Canyon Lake though.

Quartzite is wonderful in my opinion. I love the mild weather first of all. It does get windy and dusty, but the wind against my camper is soothing to my personality. I've camped at a few LTVA and I went deep to find a more seculded spot to camp. Plus there are tons of other free camping area that are close to Quartzite. I like to camp at the LTVA at Imperial Dam down towards Yuma but it is across the Colorado River in California. I love to go to Algonnes Mexico for my dental; medications and eye glasses because they are so much cheaper. You can make your visit what you want it to be. If you have a relaxed attitude and are flexible, then you will enjoy it. For me the positives far outweigh the negatives; but I have very few negatives. Oh, I love the big tent and all the vendors. I love to see what they have. I like to move at a slow pace taking it all in. So the best way to know is to experience it for yourself; you may find that you love the unique setting. Quartzite has it's own charm and and I love it.❤❤

As I spent last winter in Quartsite, I KNOW you are telling the truth. It wasn’t for me as I am an introvert and socially awkward. Food prices were crazy. The wind/sand storms were nuts! It got down to 17 degrees. I am missing the sunrises and sunsets. I think if I had an offroad vehicle to explore I would have had a better time.
The crowd at Brian's meetup was the whole reason I was planning on going this year. I went to the first one and met so many nice people. My only reason to go now is to drop stuff off at the rtr free pile. Best advice I can give for going to quartzite is to bring all the food you are going to need for the whole visit then go elsewhere for a resupply.
The roadrunner market had everything I needed, produce seemed good quality too

I went for 2 weeks in early Dec, my 3rd year. I'm done with it, dust and me don't work anymore plus the amenities suck, $11 now for showers! I've chosen to winter in Wickenburg, 5 min from town with all amenities I need, snap fitness for shower especially!

I always thought that I would go to the RTR but never made it. Now I suspect I would not have that goal.
If I go, having seen countless videos on Quartzsite… I feel like I have been there and know I would not enjoy it.
The videos are great and another reason to allow filming in National Parks so those of us who don’t hike well can enjoy them.
Yuck! I’m one of those people who think the desert is blah. Like camping in an open parking lot on dirt. I was in AZ a month or so ago and about the only area I enjoyed was Flagstaff Sedona and Grand Canyon. I need some trees. The crowds would also drive me nuts.
I think you got across to the audience what is happening in January. I've been there during that time a couple times, mainly to find out what it's all about when the show is on. The only reason I would go again in January when all the vendors are there is to find short term work to defray expenses if I wanted to travel full time, or to tune in to some of the full timers about what they consider to be the highlights of the full time experience. I live in Las Vegas so I really don't have to go anywhere to avoid the winter. I grew up in North Dakota, so I fully understand why people in cold, snowy climates want to get away for a few months in winter. I don't know of any other places that have the long stay areas at such inexpensive prices. Once you're staying in one of those places, you can take the opportunity to explore the whole Southwest in your camper. I think that is one of the main reasons go. The other reason that you already mentioned is the social experience. I think this is the main reason extroverts like it. introvert probably avoid that like the plague. Thanks for explaining it all. It might save some people the trip. To others it may be a reason for them to go.
Very informative. I am a roof tent camper and I have camped near places with lots of UTVs and definitely not my thing. I camp to disconnect and recharge most people doing the UTV off roading are drinking and riding up to 3 am or sometimes all night which defeats the purpose of me going there. So I will definitely will swing by one day but to look at the place since but that is a hard pass for me. Thank you for sharing this content
The Rubber Tramp Rendezvous reminds me a lot of Burning Man in that I never knew there were scores of people camping out for a week in the middle of the desert just for the experience. Love that this happens. Much respect to all that attend these events.
For me the main draw to the area is the OHV/ATV riding. Not a fan of crowds, so February. Also it might involve more driving down a bumpy road, but you can generally find a camp spot far away from neighbors. They also have a 2 week fee IIRC, which may be worth it over the free spots (for short stays) as you do get dump stations, water, garbage.

Been to Q twice now for the RTR and enjoyed it both times. This year going to stay on for the Big Tent RV show and the Gem show. I agree about the crowds, post office and grocery stores crazy in the afternoons, but I just get out earlier in the day to avoid the worst of the crowds. Also, stock up, do your laundry etc, before you get there. The desert and mountains are beautiful and the people are friendly.
I live in Quartzsite, AZ full-time. It is quiet in the summer! Our nearest big shopping is 17 miles to Blythe, CA, where you can shop at Albertson's and Smart & Final. It's also a better choice to avoid crowds for dining during our peak season mid-January to mid-February.

Quartzsite sounds awesome. I've been on the fence about buying an older (but nice) class a motorhome but was surprised to find out how much rv parks charge to stay on a monthly basis. $175 to dry camp for 7 months sounds ideal. Then I can stay wherever I want for the other 5 months while traveling around. Now my only decision is Beaver, Safari, Foretravel or Newell. Thanks for the info.

AZ is known for Valley Fever=respiratory virus, you get it and it's bad.
This is my 5th year of Quartzsite. I always stay in LaPosa west and generally enjoy my time here. That said every point you made is 100% valid. Going to miss your interesting presentation at the RTR this year but totally understand your reasoning.
I"m currently in the Q. It's been 2 yrs since I've been here. Used to camp in Scandon Wash however this year I thought I would try an LTVA. I have to say the convenience of water and trash is nice, but, it's getting busy, i.e. lines. Data connection has slowed tremendously since the crowds have increased. I have a booster so it's working well, so far. I have to say that the LTVA thing is much like living in a neighborhood. There are generators running most of the day (kinda like lawn mowers) and dogs barking often, along with OHV's driving by and generating dust as they wave at you. Each morning you can hear the wake up pulse of everyone, i.e. dogs/generators/OHVs/cars. You can still hear the traffic from Hwy 95 and in some cases from Hwy 10.
I used to go to Parker and shop at Walmart, but, due to fuel prices this year, I'm now looking at shopping locally. There's not 1 place that has the best prices, there are multiple places to get the best price and that includes some of the vendors at the flea market and the show. However when you factor in fuel and time it kinda works out to shop locally and cruise around outside instead of playing dodgeball at Walmart.
Just me, but summer looks more appealing than winter. I know, I know it's freaking hot. But no one is here and that's really compelling. I know...
Overall the temps are wonderful and I avoid the traffic by driving around on smaller neighborhood roads.

Wind mostly blows south west(unless it's stormy) so stay on the other side of it, and the dust is okay. You can find solitude if thats what you want but you need to drive far down the dusty roads to get away. Closest Walmart and chain stores in Parker Az about 35 miles away.
Been there once. Brought everything I needed and it wasn't January. Loved exploring and the sunsets and sun rises are spectacular.
Just spent nearly 2 months in court today. Loved it , great fun good food & friendly people. Definitely attend the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in January.
My Grandparents and friends were going to Quartzite before it was named hat. In fact they could have named it! They named themselves Snowbirds. There was an article published in our local newspaper to that effect. This was in the early 50's or so. The tradition continued with my dad into the 1990's when he passed away.

I’m in a quandary. As a single older woman, I don’t like the idea of being camped in a remote BLM site with no one else around. I have a dog, but I can’t expect her to protect me. I’m a shy, introverted person though. I want the social aspect, meeting people, making friends, but I’m not the sort of person to barge up to a group of people who all seem to know each other and introduce myself. I’m an outsider who doesn’t really want to be an outsider, but whenever I’ve joined social groups, conversation remains at the superficial chit chat, small talk level.
You can camp near others it's not like you'd be here alone. Lots of friendly people. Lots of groups of friendly people.
ASK QUESTIONS about what you want to know. None of those people can read your mind.
There are Women’s RTR events that you might enjoy
I'm just like you! Sometimes I hear the laughter and chatter around a nearby campfire and I'd like to carry my chair over and plunk it down in the middle of their party. But that's not me. If I wanted to socialize I would need to travel with a club with common interests and stick with it until I'm considered one of the gang. For right now, though, I just want to go where I want to go. I had a lot of superficial chitchats with older, introverted, single women travelers with dogs in Quartzsite. Think about who we are, where we are, and what we're doing, and it makes sense.
I’d say try. I’m a bit socially awkward. Do love ppl but not crowds. Decided to move back small town Missouri. Nope! Found especially with elderly not as friendly as Az. Not at all. Wish I’d at least traveled here.

I went in 2017 to my first RTR. I was a solo camper and I met so many nice people.
We started to tribe and go back every year. I'm an introvert. But I love the big tent because of all the free stuff they give you.
I clean out my camper every year and put it in the RTR free pile at the town park. The classes were always interesting and always felt welcome.
I go back every year. It is my vacation out of the cold. I love the peace in quiet of the desert in the sunsets our spectacular. Makes you appreciate nature.
I'm glad to have met you in 2018 and enjoy your videos.

Hello! Thank you so much for your candid review of Quartzite! I am currently just a weekend warrior for van camping, and have only recently learned about Quartzite and RTR. As an introvert (who can sometimes "moonlight" as an extrovert Lol), I am interested in at least going once to check it out. For me, I think staying a bit away from the crowds for camping, then coming into Q proper for any fun things would be the best. Also, I thank you for pointing out the one thing that would be the biggest draw for me... seeing all the Quartz/Quartzite mineral specimens, and maybe doing some rockhounding on my own! Not sure why it did not dawn on me that is why the town is named that! LOL!
I read a bunch of the comments for this video, and one person stated they have a 3 day list of places they set aside to see all the things available, I think this is a FANTASTIC idea, and I will start thinking of places to visit with 3 days in mind; and I am figuring that Quartzite and RTR would fit well into that frame for me. As a woman, I would also like to check out the Women's only RTR as well.

I've always fancied the idea of visiting the RTR, but I'd have to do it as a day visitor. Perhaps stay at a camp away from the main event with like minded quiet folks like myself.

You skipped over theft. Several people have had things stolen, car windows smashed and things in campsites missing. We have always travelled with a well trained guard dog that can be very aggressive if needed but controllable, if you didn't know you couldn't tell he was aggressive. We stay out away from everyone and move if someone pulls in close.

Nowadays it keeps my temper in check because I know the consequences, and I have learned ( finally @64) Like my mom would say Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things. And If I get arrested and my DOG does to doggie jail , it will be for good reason. But you should ALWAYS carry just in case.

I lived there back in 1976, I was 18. I loved it then, my first time living away from home. I grew up in Yuma and spent a lot of time in the mountains around there. It was really different back in the 1970’s. People weren’t as much aware of the “gem in the desert” at that time! Thank you for the “trip down memory lane”!

i spent a week camping around quartzsite Feb 2022. It was ok but I found Lake Havasu city was more my speed. I bounced around every 2 weeks till April.

For short periods, I enjoy the hustle & bustle of Q during the busiest winter season (especially HOWA's RTR and camping with groups of friends.) As was mentioned in the video, the key to getting any business done in Q is to get there at dawn, when 90% of the winter visitors are still sleeping. And there is a workaround for the crowded public campsites near Q. There is plenty of uncrowded dispersed camping in areas a short distance away, such as Ehrenberg and Bouse. So with a little planning, it is possible to enjoy the best of both world's in the Q area during the busy season.
You are correct, of course.
However, what you are suggesting takes a slight amount of effort more of thinking things through.
You can have the things you want,, add access to the things that you need, but you might need to think things through for yourself
Instead of relying on TH-cam.

In the 90s I lived in Phoenix. My dad was retired and used to travel around the country in an old van and explore and mine gold. He loved hunting through old mines and tailing piles looking for missed gold, artifacts, etc. He used to live in Quartzite during part of the year. My girlfriend and I used to drive out for the day to visit him and walk around all the flea markets. My father passed away in 2019 but every time I hear about Quartzite I always remember him.

I was stationed in Yuma at Marine Coprs Air Station back in 1968-69 and used to drive up to Blythe and Quartzite just for something to do. I loved the desert. I was in a Hawk Missle Battalion, 5th LAAMB, and spent many a month deployed in the desert. It was an oven in the day and a deep freeze at night. I did love the area though. The desert has a beauty you soon learn to appreciate. There were few snow birds back then...we called them scissorbills. Good video.
I think you nailed it! This is my third year in Quartzsite, but I’m moving around the area a bit more this year. I plan to avoid the busy part of the year, but thoroughly enjoyed the socializing earlier in the season, even though I’m socially awkward too. The LTVA pass, which I have, is also valid at Imperial Dam near Yuma, which is where I plan to escape from Quartzsite while it’s busy.
Midland LTVA is pretty chill too!

Many years ago (90's) I drove past Quartzite on the way to Phoenix. I thought, why are all these people out here? What do they do? Why do they come to camp out here in the dirt? I have since learned, but definitely know its not for me. Thanks for taking the time to give a good description so newbies can hopefully figure out if its their style. Like cruises, I know its not my style.
I love spending the winter in the desert. Especially the spring time. Summer not so much, I usually leave no later than May, for the mountains. Love the wildflowers in the spring.
I'm socially awkward too and agree with your negatives, with that being said I'm heading there right now. Seems like something you have to experience at least once. 🙂

Thank you for the veracity about Quartzsite. I am here right now at an RV park from August 22 to Sept 24, 2024. It is a hot deserted ghost town. The few hundred residents bunker down in their air-con modular homes. There is no visible industry so I don't fathom why people live here. Maybe they earn million$ from tourists in winter and that's their annual revenue.

I am a born-and-bred Mojave Desert sunbird so I sit outside and ride bicycle on empty roads under 110° sun. I love Quartzsite in its stoic state, but am curious about the rambunctious January. If I'm in the area then, I'll pop in for a while. I don't know what to think of snowbirds. Do they really despise snow so much to spend months in a lowly desert? ---

I visited La Posa but it was empty, no water or dump station. All that opens up Sept 15, but there might not even be a dozen boondockers. Night temps will drop to mid-70s by the Autumn Equinox, and maybe highs in the 90s.

There are no dog-and-pony shows or 2nd amendment exhibitionists during summer. The derelicts who do those things wither away on the sidewalk near Dollar store resting on a Trump placard, but don't panhandle because everybody is on EBT.

Fast food places are barren, although truckers patronize Pilot and Love's, so those venues are somewhat lively.

Shopkeepers give me the time of day, especially if I'm the only patron. Prices are dirt cheap. Rob's Bakery was open one day, and I was his second of two customers that day. Cal at Cal's Custom Creations talked to me for 30 minutes uninterrupted. Nice person. And the Visitor's Bureau gave me more information than I could absorb. A junk shop called A Little Of Everything closes early in summer when patronage, if any, disappears.

From what Brian says in the video, snowbirds cluster with their own clan. I'm familiar with group-think and monetary-divide. As a Burning Man veteran where co-habitation is emphasized, I don't think I can handle closed RV circles.

I got my start as a Nomad at the 2019 RTR and like to attend for nostalgic reasons, that's the only reason I go to Q.
Quartsite was one of our overnight stays on our way to Mexico. One year we noticed a problem with our wheels on our trailer and went to RV Lifestyles RV Repair. We were told to return early the next morning and they fixed things and we were on our way by noon. I highly recommend them if your need repairs while there.

I went to Quartzite in late October just to check it out, staying only a week. I spent two nights at Love's and three nights at various spots. I think you covered the negative points quite well. One, there is little to no shaded areas to park and get out of direct sunlight that even in the fall is quite annoyingly hot. Two, the prices at the grocery stores were jacked up to unreasonable levels. Ice, for example was outrageously high. Three, the dust and dirt infiltrated my van interior to the point I was constantly cleaning my counter surfaces. My clothes appeared discolored by the dust. Four, my van is a RWD vehicle an driving on many of the dirt road access to camping areas was not comfortable. A positive was the price of gas for my van. It was much cheaper than the prices here in California. Another positive were some of the people I met.
That’s why many love it around this part of AZ

I stop in Quartzsite Az. when ever I go to the phoenix area, To fly my radio control airplanes at the park field. The people of Quartzsite have always been very friendly and helpful. I hope to go back next year for their model plane swapmeet and airshow.
