Snake Eater 3D is like a more tame version of Twin Snakes in practice. Twin Snakes attempted to make playing MGS1 and MGS2 back-to-back have less whiplash by making them mechanically the same, but changing the cinematics left a sour taste in many hardcore fans' mouths. MGS3D makes playing MGS3, MGSPW, and MGSV have less whiplash and I would say that it would have succeeded had it not been for the 20 fps limit and reduced texture resolution. I really wish that they'd: A: not removed the overhead/classic camera option. Apart from the fact that the controllable camera drops frames like nobody's business in subsistence, while the overhead camera runs at a locked 25/30 depending on region, menacing that MGS3D would probably be able to target a higher framerate if it had at least had the option to switch to an overhead camera. The main reason of an overhead camera would obviously be the OG 3DS/XL/2DS's lack of c-sticks, meaning that you would have to worry about controlling the camera with face buttons and could instead use the face buttons for controls without having to use the Circle Pad pro (which can't even be used on 2DS). B: Released a New 3DS version of the game with a higher framerate that would actually take full advantage of the extra power of the "New" systems extra cores, higher clock speeds and extra memory.
As a lifelong Nintendo player, more due to happenstance than brand loyalty, it’s trained me to be incredibly patient with barely functioning software, from the original consoles that only work if the game is in the system at an upturned angle, to motion controls that don’t function, to terrible frame rates, I can stand all of these things, and pretty well at that. I’ve always been a huge MGS fan, and hearing that it could be played on my 2DS was an amazing deal to child me, and I never regretted it, I one hundred percented the game, for like the fiftieth time, and somehow beat it with those camera controls too many times to count. In fact, the exclusion of Ape Escape, the demo and secret theaters, as well as the Existence movie means there's still no definitive version of MGS3, and Delta will only complicate this fact, I imagine.
@bigman88george3 When they were re-releasing MGS3 as Subsistence, there was a third disc in the American limited edition release, and I BELIEVE the standard European release, that contained the whole game edited as a couple hour movie for people who couldn't beat it. It's never been rereleased since so it's been trapped in a 480p format for years, and most Americans don't even know it exists, which is such a shame because it's just a nice little bonus
I just found out about this version of the game due to Yongyeah talking about how this version introduced crouch walking which will be in the mGS 3 remake

In my opinion Snake's face model in the 3DS version actually looks wayy better than even the original and HD model versions of MGS3 (where Snake's face looks square-er). Plus there's normal mapping applied on some of the textures in the 3DS version as well.

Your only exposure to Solid Snake was in Brawl? They really should have capitalized on Metal Gear representation in Brawl by having the some of the games on the Wii. Missed opportunity.
An often overlooked part of this version is that while yes simplifying the controls made them more intuitive unfortunately it also made some of the more advanced / obscure moves impossible or extremely awkward to do compared to the og and the additions of crouchwalking and the TPS view do break the balancing of the game somewhat I do still really like this version overall though
This was my favourite 3DS game alongside Ocarina of Time when I had the original model back in the day. It was also the way I experienced Snake Eater for the first time. I still managed to enjoy playing through the Vita version but I definitely missed the Peace Walker mechanics. I really wished there were more games like it on the 3DS.
You just have to add a "cheat" and you can get it to 30fps no problem. Makes a massive difference, especially in boss fights. Granted, I have only gotten up to The Pain, but that fight went from being basically unplayable on my first playthrough of the 3DS version to being as smooth as 30fps can get.
@@Matanumi Yes. To add the "cheat" you have to first softmod your 3DS. Then you can overclock and apply the "cheat" with a few quick button presses (literally takes seconds).
This was how I experienced Snake Eater for the first time and it's going to be very weird to play it in the new collection. I'm sure the remake will have these changes and more.
It's crazy how adding a crouch walk makes this game so much more enjoyable to play. I sunk so much hours into this port as a teenager. The 3D camo is busted, yes, but you can always just not use it if you're more of a purist.
I remember I first picked up MGS 3D soon after the release of New Super Mario Bros 2, out of sheer disappointment of that game. What a great decision that was!!
This is still my favorite version of MGS3, thanks to the things mentioned in the video (minus the fps). Also, Yoshi! And making your own camouflage is so cool!
I played this on my New 2DS and i found the circle knob so annoying to use that I ended up switching back to the default controls and just stuck with that through the whole game.
This is the way I first beat MGS3. I loved it. Granted it was in 2012. But I never noticed the low frame rate and beat it about 5 times on the 3ds since. Loved it. I guess you don't notice these things on such a small screen. I remember being so confused when I played the HD edition and snake looked worse and I couldn't crouch.
Not only was MGS3 my introduction to playing the series, but the 3DS version is the only version of it that I have played. Now getting back into it and you remember how good of a game MGS3 is.
Hear me out This was my first way I played mgs 3 when I was like 12 It always felt odd to me when I played the other versions and not having the crouch walking
I loved having mgs3 on 3ds when it launched. I would play between classes and although I did obviously notice the low fps, it was a game that really showed me performance isn’t everything lol.
I think everyone who calls themselves an MGS3 fan owes it to themselves to do at least one play through with the original camera. There are so many mechanics and items that become useless in OTS mode, like the directional mic. It’s not a better experience, each camera angle has pros and cons, but it’s different and a lot of fun.
I've never played anything but the PS2 version, and I have the HD collection, it's just better all round IMO to run the PS2 versions of Substance and Subsistence on the PC, with Textures, upscaling, and FPS patches. I'd give the 3DS version a go if it were stable and I could unlock FPS and upscale the resolution and textures.
Gotta be one of my most wanted games that i'd probably never complete just because of the jarring framerate and portable controls. So unique, so interesting, so many good improvements to the game, locked behind a portable version.
@@ZorroCeleste1 I've played MGS3, multiple times too, it's this 3DS version I haven't played, will likely get, but never completely finish. Very conceptually interesting version of the game I hope to collect.
I honestly love the controls on the Vita in 3, you can walk slowly by holding the L button instead of putting your thumb on the D-Pad that only supports 8 directions.
i had mgs 3D and i completed it at least 30 times, i got every unlockable you could get and has a blast. It wasn’t the same as ps2 but it was enough for me to continuously replay my favorite video game of all time
In my opinion, this is my favorite way to play Snake Eater because of the improved controls and mechanics, plus I’ve learned the little quirks that comes with this version!
Thankfully we just got a breakthrough mod for the new PC version of MGS3 that adds the 3DS's crouch walking feature. Hopefully, we'll see the 3DS's other mechanical features come to PC through mods. Then we can finally have the definitive version.
MGS3 had fixed cameras? 😮 You unlocked a memory i totally forgot. I played it multiple times on PS2, PS3 and PS4. But i forgot that it was fixed in the PS2 version. Can't wait for the metal gear solid master collection vol. 1
There are two versions of MGS3 on PS2. The original/vanilla version has fixed camera while the subsistence version added a free camera and other things.
I want to think this was the second time the custom camo was an option in a metal gear game. I believe there was a mobile phone metal gear game that let you take pictures for custom camo as well
Did you install the v1.1 update to Citra? For me it reduced the crashing to mostly only during codec calls Thank you for setting straight the "Snake losing his eye disables 3D" urban legend
This was the first Version of MGS 3 I played and my first MGS game in general. It's still my favorite by far and makes me think I'm still going to prefer this to the switch port
If the performance of the game was a bit better and the standard 3ds had a second circlepad by default, mgs 3d might have been the definitive version, imo. I play this game at least once a year, and it never gets old!
I played a lot of MonHun, PSP2u and MGS PW using the claw method so the controls weren't an issue. The main reason I didn't finish MGS 3D was that it gave me noticeable nausea even with no 3D effects which I didn't feel again until I tried to play ACC with a VR headset not that long ago

An often overlooked part of this version is that while yes simplifying the controls made them more intuitive unfortunately it also made some of the more advanced / obscure moves impossible or extremely awkward to do compared to the og and the additions of crouchwalking and the TPS view do break the balancing of the game somewhat
I do still really like this version overall though
Truth be told, I like using the face buttons for camera control, and I commend the dev team for somehow making it work with limited buttons.
The collection on switch is getting a physical copy. Very happy and excited. I'm getting it
It requires a huge download from the look of it
@@dustingonzalez8080 Yea. That's happening with a lot of physical switch games. It sucks. But ill still get it. Thanks
You can play the 3DS version overclocked on a modded New3DS and it will stabilize the framerate, but still stuck at 20fps the whole time!
You just have to add a "cheat" and you can get it to 30fps no problem. Makes a massive difference, especially in boss fights. Granted, I have only gotten up to The Pain, but that fight went from being basically unplayable on my first playthrough of the 3DS version to being as smooth as 30fps can get.
are you supposed to do both?
@@Matanumi Yes. To add the "cheat" you have to first softmod your 3DS. Then you can overclock and apply the "cheat" with a few quick button presses (literally takes seconds).
@@nddugas oh, I didn't know about the cheat to set the framerate higher, I'll definitely have to try that out!
3DS sucked.
Deal with it.
Nsmb2 is great youre just a popular opinion cupcake
@@LUCKO2022😂
@@LUCKO2022why do you say it sucked, though?
The Soviets did famously love Yoshi.
Didn’t know MGS 3D was so unique compared to other versions of it. I might have actually bought it if I knew that.
I love my copy. Physical version was hard to find even when new.
Got my complete physical copy a year ago. I bet the price is gonna go up.
I wish I got a Nintendo 3DS. One of the reasons for this game.
Not only was MGS3 my introduction to playing the series, but the 3DS version is the only version of it that I have played. Now getting back into it and you remember how good of a game MGS3 is.
Gosh, watching this makes me miss the 3DS era. "If I could turn back time..."
Hear me out
This was my first way I played mgs 3 when I was like 12
It always felt odd to me when I played the other versions and not having the crouch walking
This was the way I first played MGS3 and loved it and then the rest of the games, tho it did make it hard to go back to 3 without the gameplay changes
I have this game and haven't played it yet. I didn't know about the 20 fps thing.
Now we have the Master Collection on the way! I'm very much looking forward to playing 3 on the Switch.
OTS mode?

Gotta be one of my most wanted games that i'd probably never complete just because of the jarring framerate and portable controls. So unique, so interesting, so many good improvements to the game, locked behind a portable version.
It's not that bad. Go play it.
@@ZorroCeleste1 I've played MGS3, multiple times too, it's this 3DS version I haven't played, will likely get, but never completely finish.
Very conceptually interesting version of the game I hope to collect.
@@lanceams483 - Just play it, get a nice camo.
I honestly love the controls on the Vita in 3, you can walk slowly by holding the L button instead of putting your thumb on the D-Pad that only supports 8 directions.
i had mgs 3D and i completed it at least 30 times, i got every unlockable you could get and has a blast. It wasn’t the same as ps2 but it was enough for me to continuously replay my favorite video game of all time
Yessir the circle pad pro made this the best version for me + crouch walk
I can’t wait for the remake. It’s my favorite in the series, and I’ve been dying to get my hands on this game again.
The only Version i have played, and for over 10 Years now. I need to replay this Game it has been too long
I’m still glad I own this version of the game. My 3DS will forever have a special place in my heart.
In my opinion, this is my favorite way to play Snake Eater because of the improved controls and mechanics, plus I’ve learned the little quirks that comes with this version!
I only ever played the 3Ds version so I can’t wait for the remasters and remake
This was how I played 3 and they should have used this and twin snakes for the collection I thinkkkkk
Thankfully we just got a breakthrough mod for the new PC version of MGS3 that adds the 3DS's crouch walking feature. Hopefully, we'll see the 3DS's other mechanical features come to PC through mods. Then we can finally have the definitive version.
I'm relieved. I thought it was going to be about the pachinko one.
I played the original vanilla version. Not sure how different Subsistence will be with the new camera angles.
A Snake Eater with Peace Walker gameplay man this is awesome
They need to add that crouching to the new mgs master collection I always wanted that in the hd collection
This is how I experienced snake eater and I loved every second of it
mgs 3D was the first way i played mgs 3 i later beat the original version on ps2
🤯 with peace walker being my favourite in the series,
why haven't I heard of this!?
I would like for the remake to get a photo camo mod that would be so funny fighting Volgin while wearing a 4K camo tree frog
This version was my First experience with Metal Gear and i completed it 7 times since its that good
MGS3 had fixed cameras? 😮
You unlocked a memory i totally forgot.
I believe there was a mobile phone metal gear game that let you take pictures for custom camo as well
Playing Metal gear 3D on my new 3DS wore the nub down. Also crouch walking makes 3D the best version of snake eater.
Replace it with a PSP nub. You have to super glue it into place but it makes everything SO MUCH better
The PSP version Peace walker could be bundled on the vita store and installed and the second analog stick could be used for the camera
Did you install the v1.1 update to Citra? For me it reduced the crashing to mostly only during codec calls
Thank you for setting straight the "Snake losing his eye disables 3D" urban legend
Used to have this back when…instant regret after selling it, ah well at least Switch is getting a remaster
I just watch these videos for Jon's voice
I remember the day I went into GameStop and bought Resident evil and the circle pad pro... good times.
I skipped this one at the time of its release since I had played other versions of MGS3. I had no idea it was so different than the original.
They should port this version sans 3D to the switch. It would run at a solid frame rate and have dual analog sticks. A man can dream.
The change to camera was the beginning of the end. Series completely dropped the "tactical" part of stealth.
I loved this version of MGS 3 on the 3ds. I remember doing a pacifist run just for fun and having a blast
This version of the game is what made me fall in love with the series
Fear effect was a underrated game I think a remake of that in new graphics would be a hit
Damn Jon hittin us with the last minute Big frame rate con
Finally someone admits it.
Very hard to go back after playing this version
I believe this version lets you change difficulty when playing a new playthrough after completing the game.
