What’s interesting is that almost every character is a victim of greed. The mother is greedy for that one coin. The man was greedy for a steady flow of coins. His son was greedy for the source. The business partner was greedy for the business of coins. Hastar himself was greedy for gold and food. The mistress is greedy for the scraps she gets. The British official was greedy for a quick buck. The only character who wasn’t greedy was the scary grandma. She was forced into it to save her life because she could climb really well. And she suffered for decades and decades without revealing where the treasure is just so she can protect others. Even though they barely looked after her and kept her chained and maimed, she protected others from the curse. She broke down only after 15 years of abandonment and that too in exchange for death.
I loved that. Money does have a tendency to bring out the worst in people, and this movie showed that probably better than any I've ever seen. Especially gold, with its weight and, for lack of a better word, shinyness, has an almost magical power to turn men into wolves.
