    The idea of using Hammer to model up something for 3D Printing made me laugh quite a bit, if only because I wasn't expecting it at all.

      @GouldFishOnGames  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I never do things the simple way.
      to be honest I wasn't expecting it to work, and when I managed to get something out the other side that printed I was amazed.
      I really should learn a proper tool, but being able to use something I know is a big plus.

    Very nice, well done! Modding my Game Gear broke my heart because, having modded almost every hand-held console previously, I’d reached the point where by my hands aren’t steady enough & my eyesight sharp enough to do the fine soldering required anymore. Thankfully I did manage to buy a well modded one on eBay because that’s always a crapshoot but I would have loved to have done it myself.
    Whilst emulation is an option there’s nothing like playing on “real metal” & you’ve done a great job figuring this out, with it turning out as well as it did. I’d be interested to see a version 2 but what you’ve made already works great & I can see you being happy with it.

    • @GouldFishOnGames
      @GouldFishOnGames  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      With how tricky the GG is with recapping and how precise the soldering is with the screen mods its not easy at the best of times. So sorry to hear that you couldn't do them.
      and yeah I could and do play GG games via emulation and got lots of options for SMS games.
      but some times you just want to make something silly and fun.
      I do have plans for a V2, I've made a few changes since the video including making the LED a bit better.
      but even if I don't do anything else I'm so happy with how it turned out.

      Almost, a Game gear is a portable master system.
      But a master system isn't a console Game Gear
      As I mentioned at the start of the video there are a few important differences.
      The larger system palette (SMS 64 colors, MD/Genesis 512 colors, Game Gear 4096 colors).
      The Stereo audio.
      It also got a number of games that were exclusive to the platform, or were different to the SMS version.
      Some of those have fan patches to bring them back to the SMS, but they don't always look right due to the palette issue.

    Ok but real talk, right next to the controller port would have worked fine, then you can build an adapter harness to convert it to a controller (I think that works better than having the controller port instead, or both; since it is a Game Gear at heart after all)

    • @GouldFishOnGames
      @GouldFishOnGames  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would have been cool, but while they used the Master System as a base for the Game Gear they improved it.
      and in such a way that it actually has a larger selection of colors then both the Master System and Mega Drive.
      Which makes any basic converter a little difficult.
      so you'd end up with something like the 32X.

    So like a... Mega Master System then? I've been curious about the Game Gear for a while lately (news of it's poor capacitors have prevented me from purchasing one though) and so the title here does intrigue me.
    0:20 - Even got your branding on it as well. Real neat. Is it compatible with Master Gear converter? Does it have HDMI output? I guess I'll find out.
    1:01 - I wonder if it was purely due to that greater colour palette that they never tried a Game Gear to Mega Drive player add-on, similar to how the SNES had the Game Boy Player.
    3:08 - Gosh, I'd be so worried about doing all this. All the bits to it are so tiny.
    4:47 - Wasn't there only two versions of the Game Gear; the original Sega one and the Mastertronic one in 2000? I guess it'd be unsurprising that they would have made adjustments to the Game Gear chip layout over time, though rather surprising given how Sega otherwise treated the system (for such a well selling system when you look at it on it's own, I'm amazed it never got a more battery efficient revision ever made).
    8:51 - I did wonder how the screen was going to look. It does turn out that the blue before was just a boarder, rather than the game stretching out, so it's working much like a Game Boy Player would here.
    13:02 - Being able to cut and reconnect wires like that is certainly a handy skill to have. Would save me trouble of looking for a new Wii U Gamepad charger if I could simply reconnect the wires that have split away (electric tape was saving it for a while but no more).
    17:20 - Nice bit of fun with the LED light then. It's a charming touch.
    18:07 - I'd have personally gone with a Sega Blue or even copied the grey grid boxing of the Game Gear boxes but it does look great. I love the raised element to the back; very distinct.
    19:49 - Whoa; that's quite a different looking cart there. I had seen the Micro Machines cart but that had a reason it's unusual shape. I was about to ask why it looked so different but you then proceeded to answer that question immediately.
    23:01 - A 2nd player controller port would be particularly cool. Real nice job with this.

    • @GouldFishOnGames
      @GouldFishOnGames  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for watching and leaving a very detailed comment!
      the larger color palette was a big problem with making any converter for the MegaDrive, to do it perfectly would result in something like the 32X
      People have done some patches to GG games to run on the SMS but they do look worse because of it. I think it also didn't help that it wasn't a massive success like the GameBoy.
      There were the Sega and Majesco game gears, but there were some revisions with in those.
      in total I think there was 6 board changes, VA0 - VA5 with the move from 2 ASIC to 1 ASIC being a big change.
      The final color of the machine for me was a no brainer the black of the SMS and MegaDrive, but I can see going with blue or grey would work.
      I designed the raised area to mimic the Game Gear carts, to give a hint of the machine it was for. Not sure how well that comes across.
      and yeah that Codemasters cart is an oddity!

    Why... Why did you use Hammer and not like, FreeCAD or Blender or whatnot?

      For the simple reason, I know how to use Hammer, I've been messing with Hammer 2 since CS2 dropped.
      and been using previous versions of Hammer for decades.
      Where I have 0 experience with FreeCad or Blender, so it was much faster for me to put something together in a program I knew.
      even if I needed to use blender to convert between formats.
      This wasn't a case of making things more complex for my self, it actually simplified things and saved me a lot of time.

      Basically I set the grid size to 1, which though the conversions ended up at 1mm.
      Its not the best as its additive building, you can just place a negative part to create holes or gaps, so putting in the screw hole wasn't easy.
      As some point I'll have to learn FreeCad or Blender, but I think this workflow works surprisingly well if you know its limitations.

      Like the nail polish, it makes me happy.
