Hi if you ever get your hands on a jen sx1000 please do a similar video, I had one 40 years ago then sold on ebay and sulked for about 10 years and bought another about 2 years ago , for a cheap basic synth I find it so much fun. This is a good video thanks
There's definitely something fundamentally different in the 4. I'm not sure but I believe it shares more in common with the 100M than with the later Jupiters? (3 years before the 8 and 5 years before the 6) ... there's little magical gremlins that do wonderful things inside a jupiter4 😊
@@StarskyCarr Of-course I wasn't thinking. I love Sines, probably my favorite of their software synths, but running close to the Dreamsynth DS1. Mind you the Elka is impressive and I've not even bought the PS-3300 or the Harmonia yet......help....
Sine wave are hard to produce on an analog synth, but it is basic element in additive synthesis, organ-type sounds and also sine wave is oscillator for operators in fm synthesis, so with sine wave you can create practically anything. Maybe with triangle wave and lowpass filter you can cut harmonics to create more sine wave sound too, because sine have no harmonics.
Distopian Arpeggio was 70s synth perfection, sir. I think this is a good series, Starsky... there might not be enough quality basics tutorials out there for subtractive synthesis.
Another wonderful video. I thought forget the Juno 6, this is my new favorite vintage synth then I saw the prices on Reverb and started laughing nervously.
Brilliant! And not for Jupiter only. Gives a very nice and inspirational view on synth options, not based on a synth, but on the principles. Go on with this series, please!!!
Excellent video! Superb basic synth techniques explained really well. I had one of these in 1980, lovely machine. Sold it for a JP8 in '82 which I still have...but secretly I always preferred the JP4! No idea why.
What a fantastic video, exactly what I've been looking for... not just a tutorial on what the knobs and faders are, but an actual masterclass on how to get your desired tones out of any given synth, and how to find the sweet spots in them. Thank you Matt! 🙏
You always make me grin when doing this sort of vid, the amount of snippets, whispers of decades old tunes that you slide in, really you are peerless in my eyes for this. Top job, I know I have said similar before but my statement stands. 🖖👍🎶💯
Hey Starsky, Just wanted to say I recently discovered your channel and really enjoying the content! You actually inspired me to purchase a cobalt 8 after watching your review video :D keep on doing what you're doing!
I always feel single oscillator synthesisers are often looked down on as lacking somehow, but there's an immediacy there that can't quantified (also love my MS-10 and Gnat for the same reason)
Those sweeps reminded me of the Snowman mix of Stakker Humanoid. Nice straight forward and informative video, I have a Toraiz AS-1 and I'm jealous of those hands-on controls. :D
This video is so good. Not many people could do this video this well. It's like the SynthMania videos which are so refreshing just because he's a legit keyboard player who can actually play a little riff without splicing together 50 cuts. But then also actually making every patch. Seriously most people couldn't make this video without spending a week and doing it in Ableton.
Great video, thank you! Actually, there is a synth that weirdly has a pulsewidth parameter that works on a sawtooth waveform. I've seen this back in the day on the small line of Roland LA synths, the D5/D10/D20/D110. AFAIK that's because these synths can really only create a square wave and that is turned into sort of a sawtooth wave through a digital filter trick but you can still adjust the pulsewidth of the underlying square wave ...
Yeah the Juno 2 does it as well… and there’s another video in that ;) similar to a supersaw almost. And yes it’s something to do with DCOs using pulses to do everything. If you look at the comb shaped sawtooths on the alphas they’re the same as a sawtooth plus a square. Also the Pulse does loads of things when sticking to pulse only - again it’s DCO - but a monosynth that I think can do 8 voice unison (or something) all because of how it uses the pulse in the DCO circuitry.
hey mr arr, i'd like to askl something. is there a way to get access to all those faceplate templates i see on your graphic animations all the time? i'm looking for classic drum machines and synth faceplate templates for hot rods. right now i need a drumtraks one for exmple. I'm searching for the best way to have access to originbal sized designs if there is that kind of data somewhere. So i tough i'de way to catch a recent post from you and ask you. thanks. love the channel your stuff is so revelant, especally those A vs B sessions...
I’ve no idea where I got them tbh. I’d send the files if I could remember where I’d stored them (I’ve tonnes of external backup drives due to the amount of data from recording for hours in 4K). I will have found them from googling something - though I do remember I came across the first ones accidentally and thought they’d make a nice backdrop. Sorry I can’t be more help. Maybe look for synth schematics (first thing that I’d try as that’s the terminology I’d use).
Haha… no it’s defo the one I just couldn’t quite dial it in - and should’ve played some string lines. Also doing it right after brass makes you hear the brass. Should’ve gone to strings first.
But what can you do with a sine wave? 😆 Cool stuff again, Starsky - I started synthing on a friend's Korg Poly-800 (longer ago than I care to remember), which was a b*gg*r to program, I wish he owned a Jup-4 instead :)
Haha… they’re plugins thrown in when editing the video. (Not sure if you’re joking or not - lots of people watch these at all different skills and experience levels). So it’s funny if you were being droll, but understandable if you’re new to this.
Sadly not being funny this time. I’m not new to synthesis by any means but am wholly unfamiliar with the JP-4 so genuinely wondered if it had a built-in spring reverb and chorus or something, especially as you mentioned the ensemble switch.
Yeah it’s crackers. I even made a video of nothing but filter sweeps for a laugh. It got loads of claims, lots for the same bits from different publishers. I’ve even had one for a single tone. Some calibration CD or something claimed it.
@@elwhagenI think it makes some people a lot of money. If they auto claim 1000 little vids per day and each makes them only £1 per year (that’s about 300 plays) someone’s pulling £365k a year… and I bet the numbers are way bigger than that
@@StarskyCarr I understand they get a lot of money for claiming the copyright. Just don’t understand how the hell they are allowed by TH-cam to claim a filter sweep. It’s as generic as claiming the C4 on a Casio keyboard or as ludicrous as claiming I own the air that’s passed through my lungs.
