In the "about to grab" sound effect at the beginning, I just can't stop laughing at the fact that the real bird sounds played one after another sound like a squeaky toy. It'll forever be what my interpretation of a Stingtail is; a walking squeaky toy of a beast.

This video on the Stingtail sounds is a great send-off! I feel like the Stingtail has been a fairly transformative addition to the game. For me at least it has taken the position of absolute first priority to kill. It's one of the more quiet threats and hard-to-see threats in the game, so the riveting, completely unique calls that it does make are essential to give the players adequate warning. You truly went above and beyond though, and the sound design elevates it into something I love to be terrified of!

Initially I thought it was weird sounding, but after playing, and especially after watching this video, the logic behind the sounds makes a ton of sense.
It wouldn't make sense for it to have a roar or more guttural sound like the other glyphids, as it doesn't really have the mouth to do it. So having a vastly different sound makes significantly more sense.
Also, having such a jarring sound is extremely valuable for gameplay reasons. It helps the player understand what they're being attacked by, and definitely conveys the idea that this is a more powerful enemy. Not to mention the theme of DRG in recent time is a plague, and mutants, so it should be jarring, to help convey the idea that this is some new mutated glyphid.
Great work, love seeing this kind of stuff

For quite a while i had been wondering if you did any Foley work for DRG. Glad to hear that you did, as it just adds so much more personality to the soundscape

I think that Stingtail sound design was a big challenge on many levels. Since it is basically the first enemy with major crowd control or displacement (Yes i am aware of leeches and rollies but they are either static or minor) or a PTSD factor as i like to call it. Like the sound that basically activates your fight or flight response, in that category are Minecraft creeper, Payay Cloaker, Left 4 Dead Hunter and many other. Hence the Stingtail got big boots to fill and ho boi do we need a bigger shoe size. It perfectly encapsulates what its supposed to be/do, like a gracious warning to give you a last chance to dodge the enemy or a cocky "Am over here and you cant escape me". The first time i heard it i was curious and cautious but after getting grabbed, any other time i heard the Stingtail charging its attack my fight or flight response activates. Amazingly great job done !

Absolutely fascinating. I find sound effect composition incredibly interesting and hearing your description of what sounds you chose and why you chose them is just so cool.
The squeal/screech of the stingtail adds so much to the jumpscare fright of that creature.
Thank you for sharing your work!
