it's one of those movies that leaves an impact on you way past the rolling of the end credits, the acting especially by McAvoy is brilliant and the cinematography is great. I remember my favourite scene was the one in the café between Robbie and Cecelia, and they said so much without saying much at all. Gosh i love this movie.

I just watched this movie yesterday and I was surprised that there weren’t more reviews for it online. It’s definitely an underrated movie. I agree with you that the whole part of the movie involving the letter could have been done better because it felt a little confusing and out of place or something when I was watching it, but other than that I loved the movie. Great review!

I have never bawled over a movie in a very long time and this one made me. The ending is so heartbreaking and at the same time so beautiful because it neatly wrapped the themes of regret and the power of storytelling in its ending. All of a sudden, it all made sense why they use the typewriter in the film’s score and why character perspective is so important in this movie. I actually watched this because I’m curious about why it won the Best Original Score and I thought this will be just a normal period / costume drama with a standard plot. I was so pleasantly surprised by the craftsmanship on all levels here right to the sound design. And Vanessa Redgrave’s face will forever haunt me... so good!
I feel like its the type of movie that you either hate or love. For me personally, I love this movie - I could go on and on about it - I could write an essay on it. However I have a lot of friends who have watched it and really do not like it and find it boring. I found this movie because in quarantine, I decided to re-watch a lot of my favourite marvel movies from when I was a kid and then fell down a huge James McAvoy hole because of X-Men which led me to this movie. It is now probably my all-time favourite movie.
I noticed the movie because of X-Men too! I love James McAvoy so I wanted to check out more of his films. So happy to hear this is your all time favorite movie! This is a great review. I saw the film three nights ago and I just loved it. It's beautiful, it caught my attention straight away (I did feel a bit of boredom at the very start but it went away quite fast thanks to the aesthetic of the movie). Anyway, I liked what you said and agree with you on every pont. One of my favorite films :)
It's a great Movie. I wasn't expecting much when I watched it many moons ago, but so happy I was wrong to be so doubtful. It has left a lasting impression and I have just purchased the blu ray from amazon to watch with my other half. She hasn't seen it. So, i'm really looking forward to seeing it again. Great review. :)
I love this movie. It's one of my favorites. Great cast and an interesting story. I have to disagree with you about the beginning of the movie. I think its essential to the story. And I rank the ending near the top of my list of favorites and always leaves me with a great and satisfying melancholy.
warning this movie has a veryyyyy slow slow boring slow start - so u gota like rele get past that - like it will put you to sleep, so be ready for that slow ass start

i watched this movie a while ago and it gave me a lot of mixed feelings but it’s a great movie overall
