It's the saddest novel I've ever read. It's a brilliant book. Love Ian McEwan.

I have tried to read Atonement a couple times now, but I've never gotten very far. Something about the writing... although since you said you ended up liking it in the end, maybe I'll have to give it another chance some day.

It was definitely a book where I took a lot of breaks to read other books, and I told myself I was gonna finish, otherwise I couldn't have.

I had to read it for school about four years ago and I definitely struggled. Mostly I find that people either LOVE or HATE this book/movie combo.

Agreed. You can't really just like Atonement. It brings out very strong emotions in people, either positive or negative.

why would you watch the movie before reading the book all the way!?

I almost bought Atonement the other day, but ended up getting Cold Mountain. I still want to read it, but since I don´t like Briony in the movie, I´ve always hesitated to read it because of her. I think it´s original that we get to see a manifestation of atonement through the eyes of Briony (cause she isn´t Robbie or Cecilia), but I think I would have enjoyed the plot better if it was one of the lovers the one who had to feel atonement for his or her past actions.
Still, I think it´s realistic that the story ends the way it does, and I like endings like that. Have you read Suite Francaise? From what you said about liking stories happening in Europe during WWII, I think you should give it a try, as well as Charlotte Gray!

Read the book. It's my least favourite book I've ever read. Absolutely hate it.

    The book is pretentiously boring.

You are rude. Just because people have a different opinion than you , you resort to name calling. You're rude and childish. Learn some manners and become an adult. Perhaps you'll learn to get on with others in this world.
