As an African American scholar deeply involved in the music/culture of Pasifika, , we no longer use the term "negro" (unless you speak Spanish(lol)). The migration from Africa occurred THOUSANDS of years ago, eventually with humans settling in the Pacific. I see ALL peoples of the Pacific related to each other, whether Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, even Australian aborigine. These names and divisions were labeled by Europeans from a standpoint of determining which group was "closer" to them. As an artist, I see features reappear in ALL the peoples of the Pacific and am somewhat annoyed when the "Polynesian triangle" cuts off when it comes to FIJI! I have been to FIJI and find MANY "Polynesian" features as well as "Melanesian" and even "Micronesian" features! I also find "Melanesian" features in "Polynesia" and "Micronesia"! Scholars (mostly of European background) are reluctantly admitting nowadays that the eastern half of "Polynesia" has had contact with the Indigenous peoples of South America (during the Inca Empire)! This year, I had the privilege of attending FESTPAC, and their motto was "Regenerating Oceania." Many of the leaders of the delegates kept repeating that "we are of ONE family. We are Pasifika/Oceania!" despite the labeled regions (and despite the intermixing of European and Asian groups!). Indeed, there are many cultural differences in all 28 Pacifika nations, but there are also ideas and beliefs these nations have in common! 🌺
