  • When it comes to viewing the eclipse - put safety first! A Sun Funnel is a relatively simple device that you can make at home to view the sun. Pair with a refractor telescope to create an enlarged projection of the sun that a whole group can watch at once!

*Remember to follow all safety instructions*
On August 21st 2017, every state in the US will experience a solar eclipse. Here we will discuss some of the basics you'll need to know if you are planning or helping to coordinate an eclipse event, or if you'd like to know a little bit more about what to expect.

Thank you for this wonderful and very well explained video. I got the NASA instructions a week ago, but actually watching you build it and explain how to use it just made it seem so much easier! Can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this!

Could a reflecting telescope or schmidt cassegrain be used if the objective was stopped down to an inch or two?

Yes! You can use a reflector if you stop down the aperture by placing a piece of cardboard over the front end with a 1-2" hole cut to one site to let in only a small amount of sunlight. For an image of an aperture mask, see the full instruction guide by the AAS and Nightwise.org: www.astrosociety.org/tov/Build_a_Sun_Funnel2.pdf
