  • Recorded Aug. 03rd 2013, I had the privilege of flying in the Planes of Fame Museums Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless "Dive Bomber" NX670AM was manufactured in 1943.
(History and more info listed below)
A huge thank you to my wife for shooting the ground videos.
I strapped my GoPro around my head for the On-Board footage.
I want to thank the Planes of Fame Museum located at the Chino Airport (CNO) in Chino, CA. aka Cal-Aero Field. Website link is planesoffame.org/
Thank you to Planes of Fame Pilot Mark Foster for the great flight and for letting me fly for approx. 7 minutes, also for demonstrating how the "dive brakes" operate during flight :)
Thank you to John Hinton for arranging the flight and to the great ground crew.
The below information is from the Planes of Fames website
    planesoffame.org/
    HISTORY
    • It started its career at Pearl Harbor in October 1943. From there it went to Espiritu Santo in the South Pacific in March of '44 and was assigned to 25 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. During its brief service with the RNZAF, it flew 32 combat missions from Bougainville. In May of that year it was returned to the U.S. Navy at Russell Island and departed for San Diego in June.
    • Best known for its dive bombing success against the Japanese during the Battle of Midway during World War II. Armed with two forward-firing .50-caliber ma- chine guns and flexible twin .30-caliber guns aft, the SBD was well defended while diving on a target with its typical configuration of a 500- or 1,000-pound bomb.
    • In 1958, museum founder Ed Maloney obtained Planes of Fame Air Museum's SBD Dauntless from a Hollywood film studio, minus its wings.
    • Restoration of the SBD by the Museum began in 1982 and was completed in 1987.
    DISTINCTION
    • The museum's SBD is an actual combat veteran.
    • This aircraft is currently the only true Navy SBD Dauntless flown regularly.
    • This Dauntless was used in the movie Midway, with Charlton Heston being filmed in the cockpit.

Swede Vejtasa shot down not one, not two but THREE Japanese Zeros in an SBD in 1942. It was an unbelievable feat and showcased just how well built and tough the SBD was. The crushing G's he put it through in one tight turn after another would have ripped the wings off of a Zero. The last Zero ran out of ammo and tried to ram him in a head on pass but he jinked up at an angle and his wing tip sliced through the Zero's wing surface, destroying the Zero.

Hello Jerry, Planes of Fame Museum fully restored the P-40C in 2013 & Steve Hinton flew it around for awhile at the Chino Airport in Chino California & On June 9th 2014 this P-40C arrived at her new home in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, England. She had her UK debut at the 2014 Flying Legends Air Show. As far as I know it is still flying.
