  • The National Museum of WWII Aviation put on a special event about the Battle of Midway June 5, 2021. The focus was on the SBD Dauntless Dive Bombers and the key role they played in the battle.
Three squadrons of SBD's from Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown sank 4 Japanese carriers which helped turn the tide of the war. After the presentation they flew their Dauntless which is one of three remaining in the world that flies.
Here's a walk-around video showing close up on the details: • Walkaround SBD Dauntle...

That would be super cool to see. The 2019 film Midway has some good action scenes with SBD's diving.

Since it was designed to be able to withstand the G's involved pulling out of a 70 degree dive the Dauntless could actually pull more G's in a tight turn than a Zero could so in the hands of a skilled pilot they could be quite evasive-with the sting of twin .30 caliber machine guns covering the back. Pilots would actually burst capillaries from the G's pulling out of a dive. The pilots loved them for their robustness, ability to take punishment yet still get them home, and the fact they were delightful to fly. A swarm of these must have been awful to see for any IJN sailor. SBD (Slow But Deadly), I've wondered why they couldn't put a supercharger on them.

I bet it can! It appears they rebuilt this better than it was new in the 40's.

I =do= love Ed's rep maker, but feel =it's= own rep was partly paid for with the lives of a lot of Douglass =Devastator= pilots who came in low and drew the Zeros away from the Dauntlesses far above and behind them. I met two flag officers who'd flown them in their youth at a Tailhook years ago. They agreed that the SDB was a Real Good Bird but said one had to really stay on the stick & pedals to keep it headed straight and level even though it dove true as a pelican even =after= one opened the dive brakes. Go figure.

They always commenced their attack coming out of the sun so that enemy gunners couldn’t get a good bead on them.
