Gosh!! I love how this show represents Thai culture :"3
    Some corrections
[Even tho i'm not sure if you made the subtitles or they are part of the episodes in this parts, anyway lol]
    0:01 - สวัสดีค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii kâ)
    0:10 - สวัสดีครับ (sà-wàt-dii kráp)
The thai texts of the videos says only "Sà-wàt-dii (สวัสดี)"
And for 0:10 it is kráp/krap 'cause kâ is for women and kráp is for men

Thanks for the corrections. I did make the subtitles at 0:01 0:10 0:18 and 0:29 . The subtitles were just based on what I can find on Google translate lol

@@Marngel the last ones are okay too! (I'm not native speaker tho xd)
And for the 0:18 the thai text is: ใจเย็นๆ (jai-yen-yen/jai-yen-jai-yen)
I'm not sure since i yet don't really know how to do transliteration of tones but in 0:29 i think the transliteration is: dâi-we-la-non-láeo
Google translator doesn't really does a good job with transliterations of thai, imagine it turns o into x xd

@@Gumdropsss Id love to add some Scandinavian rep in my projects. Is there any depiction in particular you think would be interesting? For example, as a Mexican I much prefer when Mexican characters are depicted as nice ordinary people rather than drug dealers. I personally would like to see Latino heroes in general that have powers based off of deity’s & myths from indigenous cultures, perhaps I could do something similar with Scandinavian characters?

    • @Gumdropsss
      @Gumdropsss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@drakebell5649 i feel like the whole norse mythology thing is already so over done… we have so much more to offer in our culture, like unique holidays and celebrations and traditions! And foods and so on and so on :) Norse mythology is cool dont get me wrong, but with ppl like Marvel who don’t stay true to the actual legends and gods stories AT ALL I’m just kinda tired of it… and ofc all Scandinavians are always drawn with that fake “viking helmet” and big blonde hair and blue eyes and superrr tall and aggressive….that isn’t how our people are at all…We are very kind quiet hospitable people actually, though it’s true we have horrible drinking culture… A lot of us are very antisocial and introverted and some can only attend parties if there is served alcohol…It really sucks, and the biggest issue is how normalized it is amongst young teens…I knew ppl who began getting drunk at 12 years old :( Many ppl think Scandinavia is this woke paradise but all countries have their issues and this is one of ours… Id love to see a danish kid be pressured into drinking or smoking or have an alcoholic parent and then how they deal with that and overcome it…But there are so many stories to tell ofc just like everywhere else in this world óvò This topic specifically isn’t explored much in America since underage drinking is looked down upon and in general the US is a LOT more conservative and body/sex conscious and won’t teach their kids how to safely navigate all these things so they don’t have to stand in a situation where they’re addicted bcs they got peer pressured or they hate their body and think they are unnormal and everyone else looks perfect or they have no idea what sex is or how it works and might get taken advantage of and get abused :( Luckily these things we r better at here, but there will always be peer pressure and abusers and so on…thats why parents need to provide a safe space to learn and ask questions without judgement…so that more kids are educated on these things when they go out in the real world by themselves and can say no to drugs or to peer pressure or to creeps bcs they KNOW they are worthy of someone who loves them and doesn’t treat them like an object! Ok kinda went off topic…I just feel like these issues don’t get highlighted enough outside of Scandinavia and we are all young and confused at some point and we need to know we aren’t weird or alone or that if someone abused us it was NEVER our fault. And then they need to teach us kids how to stay safe and protect ourselves! >:D

As of October '21, all but one show in Disney's Saturday morning rotation features an Asian female character. But "Amphibia" invokes the most use of that character's ancestral tongue.
Molly McGee is half-Thai, but she never speaks it. Same deal with Gloria Sato, whose parents speak Japanese to each other. Marinette Dupain-Chang's terrible Mandarin, and the fact that her white not-boyfriend speaks it better than her, was a plot point in one episode and the "Ladydragon" movie.
(In the interest of full disclosure, it must be noted that Luz Noceda appears fluent in Spanish, and even her girlfriend from a completely different dimension is picking it up.)

@@lavenderbakery4184 yeah, shit like that is super common. Kids of immigrant families stop speaking the native language for all sorts of reasons. In mine’s case, my family was essentially traumatized out of speaking Japanese after that internment camp thing. My grandma stopped speaking it and tried to raise my mom and uncle white. My moms just plain uninterested in learning, tho did take a couple classes as a kid at the local Buddhist temple. Overall tho, she’d rather collect records and funko pops.
Interestingly, while she can’t speak Japanese, my mom has little trouble understanding it. I started taking Japanese for heritage and weeb reasons. Everytime I speak it around the house, she understands me perfectly and responds in English. We’ve had full conversations like that lol. One time I carried a convo in Japanese with our waiter at a restaurant, and she followed and understood everything we said! Down to the details.

I also LOVE the usage of Thai language because it’s not just a few words or the ones that are well known but full blown, grammatically accurate (down to the tone shifts), naturally flowing sentences that Thai people would use in everyday life. (If this show aired when I was a kid, it likely would’ve motivated me to re-learn Thai at a younger age.)

Only the grandma's pronunciation are spot on. I could understand the other dialogues after replaying them. Except for Polly, I can't understand what she's saying.
But overall, everyone did a great job considering how phonetically different Thai is to English.
Edit: I meant to say I couldn't understand Polly, not Anne.

I think Polly should have used the words “lui!” (ลุย!) or “book!” (บุก!) that actually mean “charge!” or “attack!” if she want to told the mob to start a fight (and yes, if she want to cheer the mob up, she can still use “zoo zoo!” tho)

i love how this show integrated anne's thai identity into her character and the story without it feeling forced. Like all the thai dialogues occur in realistic contexts so like IT MAKES SENSE for them to be there and i love it SOOO MUCH. One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to foreign rep in american cartoons is that the immigrant characters say random words in their native tongue out of nowhere and in scenes that REALLY dont need it (one thing that annoys me about The Owl House too. hell im bilingual too but luz's spanish is most of the time so weirdly placed sorry). But yeah i think the fact that Matt IS thai-american plays a HUGE part on the quality of this rep. He knows what it feels like to be in this environment. so yeah this is probs the best rep ive seen on this matter ever

I am thinking that since the characters are supposed to be Dominican, if I remember correctly, the typical speech pattern is supposed to be fast ... like, to the point where even other Spanish speakers can't keep up, right? Mexican-raised. Can say that Dominicans can speak real fast)
And some of the specific slang to that country too? I'm not just talking unique words. Like, I think there was a part in which the word "recoger" was used, but I can see why the showrunnders did not use "coger", which I find is more typical in Dominican Spanish (because the vast majority of Spanish speakers in the U.S. tend to be Mexican ... if you know, you know).
I'm also glad I am not the only one that felt weird about the Spanish in the show. Phrases sometimes out-of-pocket.
But something else I tend notice is that these bilingual characters ... tend to not be? Like, even the parents and children communicate to each other in English, more often than not. I know this is a show in English, and I know this is an experience many immigrant families have, but I'd actually be curious to see some media where the Biligualism is actually there. I mean, I am one of those that can speak English just fine (contrary to the "belief", my English is not messed up, it's my Spanish, even if I speak that language at home), and is fluent in Spanish (like, I can have detailed conversations; I don't communicate in English with my parents unless it is intentional). Like, go allll in with it.
