    Dear Peter, lichen are an identification of air quality. I don't know the quality of air if they're absent, but the shorter the lichen are, the worse the air quality and the longer the lichen are, the better the air is! That's why you see so called 'beard-lichen' only in areas with outstanding air quality, for example in the mountains. I haven't confirmed this, but the name of the Lord of the Rings character, Treebeard could be based on those lichen. Hope others find this useful as well!
    P.S. Love your work, and would love to keep seeing the videos.

I felt that I left behind part of family. If I lived in Britain I would come and choose one of your wild trees. Anyway, enjoyed the tour, its g r eat to have a look at all that you have. Just lovely. I’m not a gardener or botanist, but I’d guess lichen thrives on the rougher bark since it’s a fungus. Its spores would be more easily trapped and grow. I base this on rocks. I’ve never seen lichen on smooth rocks.

    Lichen species differ in their sensitivity to air pollution. Your lichen species may be robust enough that some pollution doesn't slow them down. I think deep green lichens tend to be more sensitive to air pollution, so your silvery ones are likely more hardy.

  • @patrykwerner1414

    Every specie has different pH of the bark and the lychens are very vulnerable to pollution. Stomata of needle trees are thinner and less active due to the fact that needles are just smaller than the leaves, so confiers bark is naturally better for lychens because conifers don't soak so much of a pollution. (I observed lychens of some of your pines etc but not on leafed trees)

    • @patrykwerner1414
      @patrykwerner1414 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also if the tree doesn't grow fast on thickness or length (but thickness more important) it is easier for lychens to accomodate on that particular tree.

    What do you think about bud back possibility on trunk below airlayering in your big larch?

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pine has rough bark but no lichen ever grows on them here

    • @akimdrev
      @akimdrev 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the difference of lichen growth level on larch and pine is in lightness of branches? Usually larch crown lighter then pine one, and lichen need light. Short warming in cold season is enough for fast awakening and development of symbiotic microalgae and fungus in lichen. So, lichen like deciduous larch

    Are There Any Benefits of Lichen?
    Surprisingly, lichen can actually be of benefit. It’s a natural air quality indicator, as it absorbs everything in the environment around it, but only thrives when the air quality is clean. In fact, scientists use lichen as a measure of air quality in different areas. Lichen also converts carbon dioxide to oxygen and absorbs any pollutants that are in the area. ..credit .LAM Tree Services.
