This might seem like a silly question, but is there any way to access Gmail? The reason I ask is that I'm really interested in the idea of detoxing, and this seems perfect. However, I usually use my phone to board the train, as the train manager scans a QR code for my ticket. Without the train app, that wouldn’t be possible. But if I could still access my emails, it would be perfect.

Just found this video sorry I’m a rad late to the party. I have had LP2 since September 2022. That is also the day I deleted all social media except for TH-cam and it has been great. I don’t even have a smart phone anymore. Since starting this journey I have lost 60lbs, gained lots of healthy mental health. Managed to push bilateral inguinal hernias 😮 with all this free time and should be having surgery soon. And couldn’t be happier in my 16year marriage. Going dumb phone was was the smartest thing I have done on years.

My view on the process point: they are building this phone to be the last phone you’ll need. No need for yearly upgrades like all big techs out there. This company will not have the constant yearly revenue of people upgrading there phones year after year. So to me, the higher price point allows them to exists and service this phone further down the road.

Flag ship phones by leading manufactures start at $800 and can go for $1200. No one complains. The incremental “new” features they add to their phones doesn’t justify purchasing their phones. I’m willing to put my money down on the LP 3 it offers a quality tool that won’t soak up my time or sell my data.

@@buttercup5470 People do complain… we complain all the time about phone prices these days. but the latest iPhone for the same price has a better camera, better screen, better software, better chipset, better almost-everything. You don’t need a nearly $1000 (after taxes) dumb phone to curb your screen addiction, dude. Just grab a quality dumb phone for like $75-100 and save the rest, you’ll get the same outcome. Put it towards some college classes or something, you’ll enrich your life way more than you would with this weird, overpriced “rich 20 year old with a screen addiction but doesn’t want to be seen with a dumb phone” device.

Oh I agree 1,000,000%!!! I’m one who would greatly benefit and am a bit desperate to greatly reduce my phone/ipad usage and live with far more focus and less pulls and distractions. Some things, you “can’t put a price on,” but then, at 70 on a fixed income, that $800 “price” is a tangible reality. I’m also trying to figure out how to go without a couple of medical apps (am a caregiver, plus managing my own diabetes with an app-tied CGM), it’s my cycling computer, gps and route creator, etc. Those are fairly essential lifestyle-and-health apps I’ve not figured out how to function without in what seem to me rather indispensable. But agreed - the distractions are a monster battle. The iPad is also very much tied to my work and studies - but a monster always also lurking.

@@MorganTheGorgon That's like telling a kid, "look at the cookie jar but don't go in it." We have been conditioned for the better part of the last 2 decades to be wired to our smart devices. When you remove temptation and replace it, the behavior will naturally subside. It's not about semantics but the principle of the core issue at hand. Also its unrealistic to expect the vast majority of people to purchase a shittier version of something they rely on daily. I can also bet you if you're paying $75 for any phone in this economy you are a getting a premium product of inconvenience. This coming from someone who grew up in a frugal household.

I dig the boxy industrial design on the 3. I understand why the cost is so high, they're not a huge company, this is a low quantity run product, and they don't have recurring yearly revenue. But I'm still not sure I could dump so much money on such a thing. The pre-order discount is nice, but I don't pre-order on principle.
I'll stick to trying to make my smart phone dumber. You don't need a dumb phone if you have the restraint to delete the apps that distract you. I'm a few months in to muuuuch much less social media use and I already feel an improvement in my mental health. Don't feel forced to spend money and work with what you have. Any smart phone can be dumb if you try.

i agree on the cost. i wish it was more affordable. and I'm curious about the quality of pictures. my service provider gave me, my wife and her parents Google Pixel 7's for "free," and it's an awesome phone but like you mentioned, the phone addiction is REAL sometimes.

Retail is $799, and even preorder is $399?! I'd pay maybe $250 at most for a minimalistic iPhone and even that seems like I'd be throwing money away. A ridiculous price point that Apple needs to set much lower.

I have been using the light phone for almost two years and I was really looking forward to an upgraded model. I'm a little disappointed because they got rid of the eink and they added a camera. I understand that the camera is for functionality and to capture the moment, but it's so easy to get distracted by scrolling through the photo album feature, which I ultimately don't like. The eink created such a mindful experience with the phone. The price is a no go for me - $400 USD is $650 Canadian, which is outrageous. I ended up purchasing the Hisense HiReader Pro which doesn't have a camera, but it's eink with a fast processor and you can delete apps that you don't want to have with you all the time.

The design is awesome. I love small phones. But... I wish it was an Android skin instead of its own OS. This is a dealbreaker. I understand what they're trying to achieve, but it's nearly impossible for them to create all the essential 3rd-party apps and services that you personally might need. I have an hour of screen time on my phone already, I'm not addicted to my phone or anything, but this kind of phone would not allow me to use services that I'm used to (like my favorite podcast app, for example or Spotify, stuff like that). I think smaller screen already limits what it can do for people who need to limits themselves, but I personally just want a smaller phone and I think it looks cute. On the other hand, 1800 mAh battery in Android phone would've been a disaster.

Cool concept! Smart phones are becoming a big distraction, and it is sadly affecting especially the Gen Zs. Even the book "the anxious generation" has indicated the rise in depression for young people because of smart phones. Not sure how light phone can compete with the tech industry, but I think it would be a wise purchase for teenagers who want to have a phone.

Is there a way to use this as a primary phone, but be able to keep an Android or iPhone and move the SIM card back and forth - effectively one phone number that can be moved between devices - for when you want or need to have the full smartphone experience?

    • @reagantrose

I tried to do this when I had the Light Phone II-my idea was to use that as my primary phone and just have the iPhone for when I traveled, but have the same number. There are some workarounds that kind of worked (try searching Reddit). But, unfortunately, there was nothing I found that didn't end up being a big headache in the end.
