I was just telling my son about shipping container pools and wanted to find a video to help him see what I was talking about. Your video is excellent because it compares a shipping container pool to other kinds of pools with pros and cons, which is super helpful. Thank you!
This is great content. It cleared my mind on having it above the ground if I choose to have a container pool. You can always build a deck around anyway :)
Again, I agree with you 100% on this new use of shipping containers. If your handy and would like a pool, it makes a nice project to build yourself. I built my first 16’x32’ pool myself using a concrete slab, and I then framed up 48” walls from PT 2”x6” at 16” O. C. THEN I just sheathed the inside with marine grade PT 5/8” plywood covered with 1/4” rolled poly foam ( available in 48” x 50’ rolls) spray 3M ADHESIVE on the plywood and press on your rolled foam. Do all your PVC plumbing on the outside and back fill the pool perimeter with soil and use diagonal 2” x 6” PT BRACES EVERY 48”. Buy a standard 16’ x32’ vinyl liner and set up a shop vac on the skimmer side. Fill slowly and press out all the wrinkles. Then double up the vinyl at the top plates of your wall and top with Cedar or Redwood. You can build a walkway on top of your walls edge like a small perimeter deck right on grade. Buy a filter system and you have a nice pool for under 7500.00 in today’s money. My first pool was built 35 years ago using the process described. I sold that house 20 years ago and the present owners still enjoy that pool today. It will last a lifetime if maintained well. Sorry for the book, I thought you might be interested in an alternative way of building a pool. ✌🏻🇺🇸
@@hamyncheese I saw your first comment and I just wanted to let you know that the pool I built was drawn out on plans for the Building inspector and a permit was filed for the construction. Plumbing, Electrical and construction Permits were pulled and all necessary inspections were done. It all passed the Code requirements with ease. It was overbuilt and 10 times stronger than any typical galvanized metal panels typically used on Inground pools. The concrete slab was poured over 48” footings with 4’x8’ metal reinforced mats. The slab could have been used to build a house on as they were dug in a 48” grid pattern. The best part was the concrete pour was done in a single pour. As the forms were filled it also filled the footings, making it a monolithic pad 8” thick. This is why it’s still in use to this day. The liner has been replaced recently I was told but it otherwise is rock solid. A 16’ x 32’ in ground pool can be built BETTER and stronger for LESS!! Thanks for the second comment. Now you know😃✌🏻🇺🇸✌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Unless I own a shipping company, I do not think that I would ever want a shipping container. Thank you for a great (but concise) explanation of shipping container pools.
Excellent information. The lack of insulation in a shipping container pool is a key factor that most people will overlook. In a hot country like Australia, it is probably not as much an issue. But in cold climates the amount of energy needed to keep a pool warm is a big cost issue.

I so badly want to disagree with you because I love the look, but you’re so right that they’re completely impractical. You also mention pretty much every disadvantage that it has that I never thought of. Lol
I'm sure that someone could make a shell for any other over-ground pool that makes it look like it was a shipping container once. It might cost a lot but enough money tends to make (nearly) everything a possibility ;)
You could easily contract someone to build you an on-ground pool that retains that same look using traditional/conventional materials and come up with that motif you are interested in while avoiding all the disadvantages at the same time

I had this crazy idea. What if we bought shipping container apartments, gutted them, repainted them, then we used them to store large amounts of commercial products? If you look at the design of a shipping container apartment you will notice that they essentially just a big box full of stuff. They can be even be stacked on top of each other. Makes me wonder why no one's thought of this before.
We have above ground pools. They are easily installed and non disruptive. The best part is you don’t need a crane to lift it over your house (and risk dropping it) when you can buy them from Walmart and put it up yourself. Also they are like 100-3000 $ rather Then 25k
Half of the arguments were about problems that the company had already solved. They obviously had the fiber glass lining figured out and the structural reinforcement was included in the price.. The only valid argument against them (before we went into the apples/oranges comparison with endless pools) was insulation. And that obviously depends on the climate.
Very sincere, realistic and educating way of putting things. A very good way to help people to come out of ignorance instead of dreams based on fantasies.
20k for a tiny shipping container or you could pay a quarter as much and get a massive above ground pool that lets you do laps or relax in and is pretty cheap to maintain.

I didn't even knew about this alternatives! Thank you very much for sharing the info!
If you think a large pool is difficult to maintain, then think twice about an endless pool sized pool. The larger the volume of water the easier it is to maintain the water chemistry. In a smaller pool you'll constantly be fighting with PH etc. Love your videos.
There's nothing wrong with an affordable above-ground pool. Just build an attractive, functional deck above and screen the nuts-and-bolts below with landscaping.
With the world under lockdown and the future of social distancing practices, I am seriously considering an endless pool. I swim 5 days a week. Its been 3 months i haven't had any swim and i don't know when the pool will be open again. Your TH-cam video gave a good insight to owning and maintaining a pool.
I build a heated tub myself for a fraction of the price.. I took 2x2x2x2 pallets in the shape of a rectangle, and 4 on the ground.. Then added a plastic sheets on the inside and outside. With 4 steel bars surrounding it for strength.. That only costed me $250. Next I added a copper pipe that went from the pool into a fire, and back into the pool. Total costs for a heated hottub was only $500. It would easily fit 10 people. I should have recorded it for youtube, but I didn't.. Will do next time. No need to spend 10k or 20k!
I did a shipping container pool, I also used to build in ground traditional pools and I will say I love the container pool. it was about half the price of a fiberglass pool and I was able to do most of the work.
You know I came across your channel by accident as I'm hoping to buy a house soon but you have made architecture really interesting. So I have subscribed :)
Honestly; seeing a house with a pool is a huge turn off for me (from an ownership perspective). I see a pool and instead of wonderful relaxation, I see *money pit*. Can't swim in it in the winter (not a cold [read: doesn't get below freezing] climate where I am, but outdoor swimming isn't something I do 6 months of the year) And the other 6 months of the year I wouldn't use it every day. So instead of something nice, I see 12 months of maintenance for 30 days of use per year. Not coincidentally we get 4 weeks of leave every year ... funnily enough I can just go on holidays somewhere that has a pool.
growing up in arizona, I disagree. That being said, seeing in ground pools in places like NY or illinois seems stupid and lavish. As for your personal opinion on using it, thats entirely up to you. I knew people that never used their pool but I also knew of people who would use it at least twice a week for 8 months out of the year. The maintence wasnt bad for those people because if you did a small bit of skimming once a week before using it, it would never become a huge issue. Biggest thing would be cleaning the limescale off once a year.
The first disadvantage does not apply. The hydro-static load of the water is actually supported by the fiber glass not by the steel sheets. The fiber glass is durable material, but it loses its strength and ductility when you put it under sun heat. This due to fact that fiber glass gets heated slowly and gets cooled slowly which causes the material to loose its strength. This is a material science concept called Tempering.
My friend has an in-ground pool. It came with the house. Expensive to maintain, and even being stuck home last summer in the pandemic, she went in like 4 times. The great thing about container pools is you can have them hauled away when you get sick of them. She probably won't even open it this year.
Yes, a 10,000L of water weights 10 tonnes, but the walls of the container are only subjected to a stress relative to the pressure head of the water. So a 1.5 metre deep pool only has a stress of 14.7kPa or 2.13psi on the bottom of its walls, meaning a pool only needs to be as strong as an air tank rated to 2.13psi. The fibreglass shell is easily enough to hold the water in sideways. The steel container only holds the shell up off the ground.
Add in "extreme environment" and shipping container pools make sense. For example, I live in the Yukon Territory. We have permafrost here...meaning 'in ground' pools are simply not practical unless you are spending an OBSENE amount of money, and even then, it's going to break/crack sooner rather than later simply due to warming/freezing of the earth around it. .. So for up here, yeah, I can totally see a shipping container pool being a good thing. In fact, my parents used to have an above ground pool for about a decade and a half. It was wonderful during hotter summers...not so much during cooler ones.
First I watched Nicole build her own pool with her husband watching and then I saw 10 videos of the pool construction. I was super close to getting a pool and then your video came up
I feel like Shipping Container Pools are trying to be a catch-all everything solution and competitor to all the specialised options out there - it may be cheaper than the Endless Pool but I would rather buy a specilised piece of equipment such as an Endless Pool for exercise than buying a shipping container pool and a bunch of add-ons to make it into that exercise equipment. Same with a spa, etc. Everyone is obsessed with shipping containers - I was in interior design school (dropped out due to being bullied by instructors for being partially colour blind) when the shipping container obsession was only just starting and it reeked of finding a solution to a problem that wasn't understood properly (metal waste from used/damaged shipping containers) by making it work on Pinterest and Instagram.
@@mabamabam No one said they claimed to be the best pool. They're just low quality by virtue of their starting material. These shipping container pools are still being priced as luxury items, so they're expecting customers to pay premium prices for an objectively worse above ground pool just because it's "easier to transport" in the event of a move. Which is kinda ridiculous.
@@qaasi95 the point isn't that you might move house. The point is that you have to get the pool to your house in the first place. And even more to the point the company can now get their pools made in china a ship them to Australia cheaply. They aren't very expensive at all. Of course a pool in Australia costs more than one in the southern US, everything in Australia costs more because they pay workers properly.
@@mabamabam ???? That's literally even stupider than I thought. This sounds like a supply chain gambit. Take advantage of an oversupply of containers to ship substandard above ground pools cheaply (cause they pack well and are cheap to manufacture) and overcharge for the novelty. I was looking at US based suppliers when I was researching prices cause I live in the States. I'm sure I could find cheaper ones if I looked even harder, but I couldn't find any below 20,000 for medium sized containers, and most were much more expensive.
@@qaasi95 not seeing how it's stupid. If the customer values the ease of install and low price then it's great. If they don't then they won't buy it. Either way it's using containers how they were meant to be used, to make transport cheaper.

Nope because she didn’t truly research
One thing that people don't think about is the lifespan of the pool and what to do at the end of the economic life of the pool. I do a lot of swimming pool demolitions. I get two or three calls a week from people who want to get rid of their pools. It's sometimes more expensive to fix an old pool than to demolish it. It's not an asset.

@Salvadore Orozco No. They don't make good houses at all. Basically, if you're going to use one for a shell of a house, you have to actually go ahead and build an entire house inside the thing, complete with framing and walls and everything.
I'm going to stick with going to my local public pool. It is half indoor, half outdoor so it can be sealed off for warmth in winter, and left open in the summer. If I get there 1 hr before it closes I get a lane to myself, and the pool is surrounded by bushland so we get kookaburras and magpies. It is so beautiful and peaceful, there is nothing like swimming in peace and quiet while the birds go about their business as the sun sets and dusk falls.

Never thought about a shipping container pool but your video was extremely interesting none the less. 👍🏿
Practicality and maintenance is everything in life. Thank you for your wisdom.
Shipping containers became a fad, or a buzz word. They are absolutely great to buy as a shed, or.... storage container... but twisting them into houses or pools is just swimming upstream.
Same with the Euro-pallets, it's getting annoying, really
I was just telling my son about shipping container pools and wanted to find a video to help him see what I was talking about. Your video is excellent because it compares a shipping container pool to other kinds of pools with pros and cons, which is super helpful. Thank you!
Honestly watch another one
You've got a gift for analyzing and presenting complex concepts. Clearly very intelligent too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is great content. It cleared my mind on having it above the ground if I choose to have a container pool. You can always build a deck around anyway :)
Thank you.
At first I thought I was listening to a commercial. But you do give a real pro and con presentation.
Yes, half way through I was thinking this is just an advertisement, but it recovered well
Again, I agree with you 100% on this new use of shipping containers. Do all your PVC plumbing on the outside and back fill the pool perimeter with soil and use diagonal
2” x 6” PT BRACES EVERY 48”.
Sorry for the book,
I thought you might be interested in an alternative way of building a pool. ✌🏻🇺🇸
deleted old dumb comment so that I could say this instead: Thank you for the description and assessment of your pool construction!
@@hamyncheese
I saw your first comment and I just wanted to let you know that the pool I built was drawn out on plans for the Building inspector and a permit was filed for the construction.

Excellent information. The lack of insulation in a shipping container pool is a key factor that most people will overlook. In a hot country like Australia, it is probably not as much an issue. But in cold climates the amount of energy needed to keep a pool warm is a big cost issue.

You just saved me tons of time, energy, and MONEY!
Honestly the only thing shipping containers are actually good for is shipping
When I was little, I had a pool that was inflatable!
Cheap. Easy to maintain. Simple to store away.

If you think a large pool is difficult to maintain, then think twice about an endless pool sized pool.
The larger the volume of water the easier it is to maintain the water chemistry. In a smaller pool you'll constantly be fighting with PH etc.

Just buy a 40 yard dumpster from your local landfill company. Way cheaper.
I did a shipping container pool, I also used to build in ground traditional pools and I will say I love the container pool. it was about half the price of a fiberglass pool and I was able to do most of the work.

So happy to have found your channel!! Great analysis of different products and technologies...thanks for all your efforts.
I see pool as money makers lol.u can rent out ur place as a venue place for large group people bday etc. Easy money per day rent. They love pools.
I had no idea a shipping container pool was even a thing. It makes complete sense...but you make a lot of good points Pro's and Con's.
Should you make a pool out of something that rusts when exposed to water? Take a wild guess.
Hi Belinda, great job in explaining the options. I will keep in mind this video when wanting to install a pool in my small yard. Thank you
I appreciate this commentary/critique. It helps give me a better idea of what my dream home should be. Thanks
I swear one of these days they make shipping containers out of shipping containers!
Thanks, very informative. Love the pros and cons. I love your accent!
First I watched Nicole build her own pool with her husband watching and then I saw 10 videos of the pool construction. I was super close to getting a pool and then your video came up
I'm with you. I've looked into Endless Pools and that's the way I'm going.
Thank you for being so honest! Keep up the good work!
Shipping container pools are designed to be easy to transport. They are very good at that.
They don't claim to be the best pool.
