you have just explained in quite basic terms what many MLS fans (myself included) are never fully able to understand I think it would be better if MLS took this out though
I hope you get into the complicated ways this affects actual players, such as discovery rights and the recent addition a few years ago (based on bargaining with the players association) with a limited version of free agency for league veterans (finally). And the probably unthinkable concept for Europeans of player trades. Good simple introductory video with no extra fluff. I like it
@discoveringmls 👍 the franchise model definitely adds a wrinkle. Hopefully you've understood some of the historical reasons for this. MLS has all been too self aware of the sports market in the United States being basically already "full", and what happened to the old NASL (North American Soccer League) in the 70s. (If you look it up you have to differentiate from the current modern variant) Other reasons it feels like the league is dragging its feet on making any changes.
@hengineer yeah, I really feel there’s a push-pull between the league, who want to keep parity and preserve the US model, and the clubs/fans who want to get better and compete globally
