    It’s nothing short of amazing how you guys managed to break down polar patterns and bleed problems, giving just enough information through demonstration why those technical aspects can work against you and how to apply some pretty simple techniques to make pickup patterns work you. Let’s have a round of applause for Neumann! =)

    I came across this video from a Reddit post. Wow! This is one of the finest instructional videos I have ever seen! The amount of work you put into it is obvious. The timing and choreography, the look, the in-built demonstrations, the clarity of content... wow. Just wow.
    And, at the risk of repeating myself, one last word:
    Wow.

    Wow, what an amazing video! Not sure if I can use all those tips since I use a harp instead of a guitar so I have the strings really close to my face when I'm singing... gotta find a way around it. But the video was incredibly fun to watch and I loved the artist's style and voice. I'm so impressed! Thank you :)

    • @GeorgNeumannGmbH
      @GeorgNeumannGmbH  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mia, with the techniques we introduce in the video, you will be well prepared for your harp recording. You just have to find out where you position the two mics to get the best possible cancellation of the other sound source.

    Great production quality video and audio here. How about combining the 103 and 105 used in episode one and episode two? 103 on the guitar pointed downward between bridge and players right hand while the 105 on the voice in the same position as in episode two?

    • @GeorgNeumannGmbH
      @GeorgNeumannGmbH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Reed, yes, you can do that. The small disadvantage is that the TLM 103 has a cardioid and not a supercardioid pickup pattern.
      The trick of letting the voice come from the direction of maximum cancellation of the supercardioid does not work so well for this mic. The KMS 105 for the vocal works great though, as explained in the video.

    Oh yeah. I need more of this. I'm a one-man band. This is how I roll. Let me ask...why aren't we using the guitar pickup? Is using a mic far superior? Discuss...

  • @AdamNicholsMusic
    @AdamNicholsMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I only have one condensor mic so going to do the 1 room mic technique you showed in the last video but also thinking about plugging my acoustic directly into my Interface & using my condenser just for vocals for a live recording. I don't see many people do this, is it a bad way to record? I'm guessing it's because it doesn't sound very natural?

    • @GeorgNeumannGmbH
      @GeorgNeumannGmbH  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adam, the approach you described will give you the benefit of separation. Although we always recommend trying out different techniques to figure out what works best for your individuell project. 🙂

    after the last mic adjustments, I was hearing some slapback delay on the vocals, probably due to the reverb of the second mic. was this intentional or is this a consequence of the sources not being separated enough?

    • @GeorgNeumannGmbH

      Hi there! This was intentional indeed. Geert announces the use of effects in the video!

    great tutorial...but a pity you added that extra reverb on the last example of the microphones placing. with that additional artificial reverb, is hard to compare exactly to the original setting (traditional setting) around 3:30. that original setting, despite having the voice bleeding more into the guitar microphone, sounds more natural and organic.

    • @GeorgNeumannGmbH
      @GeorgNeumannGmbH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! We used some effects at the end to show sonic variety of this setup because people like different things (sound = subjective)! However, before that (around 7:20) you can hear Achim perform without any effects.

  • @tbhv
    @tbhv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    does any one else think that the tonal difference is maybe just not worth it to isolate each source so much? I feel like it makes no sense being so radical with the mic placement to separate the sounds when in the end they are supposed to be heard together. For instance by recording the vocals closer and at such an angle closer to his chest you end up getting a stronger bass response which you maybe have to eq out in post- the irony is that the whole function of moving the mic in the first place is to make it easier to process the sounds- including shaping the tone of each sound to be ideal - which very well could include removing this boost in the bass. Im not saying it's not worth it- but it's almost not worth it. I think an important idea that goes with this is that the quality of a recording is founded primarily in the results you get initially in the tracking phase i.e. you can only polish a turd so much.
