Japanese words are usually only 1-2 characters each thought so i guess it's not that bad, and probably similar speed to neat handwriting. For example "This is a tree" (11 characters) is "これは木だ" in Japanese, only half the characters :) The question is how long it would take someine used to this machine to find the correct character.

Actually, the Japanese language does not work like ours, each of those symbols could mean a word, and the word changes depending on its combination. (I don't know anything about Japanese, this is what the Wiki says).

Kanji is is chinese tho, japanese language is mixing, Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji(Rarely Romaji) In other words, The main signs he is using are Kanji(chinese) You can see the Hiragana block in the top right middle of the sheet. Havent seen Katakana on the sheet, but its mainly used to "translate" foreign words into japanese(without translating them, actually)... Eh, whatever, I hope that helped

On smart phones, keyboards are a three by three key grid where you swipe one of four directions from each of the nine keys or tap on the keys. This method is direct kana typing, and the phone will then suggest kanji or katakana to replace the hiragana. There are japanese specific keyboards of course, and many places use them exclusively, but in my experience (limited) it’s mostly just qwerty that converts to japanese. You can download a japanese keyboard for your pc or phone for free through the device settings. I encourage you to try it out, it’s pretty fun.

@@hatomarukun2000 漢字が多く使われていた時期にもハングルタイプライターには漢字がなかったので、文章はすべてハングルで、漢字が必要なときは直接書きました。これが現在のハングル専用を可能にした予習効果ではなかったかと思います。

戸籍作成で使われている物は、もっと機能がある機種になりますが、基本的にはこの様に作成されていました。地元の区役所にも、数年前までは菅沼製のタイプライターがありましたが、今では姿を消しました。
