    I love that you call it "regular old 6061" instead of marketing hype "aerospace quality 6061". Thankyou for knowing what's what.

      AIRCRAFT ALUMINUM 6061. THIS IS BEFORE heat treatment becuse it can get harder. I used to make all kinds of stuff with this in a machine shop.

      Ive been cutting aluminum for 21 years. I agree 6061t651 is the jack of all trades when it comes to aluminum..

    Glad to see you try that! Worked better than I expected. Even if you use a couple up its a low cost option.

    Careful with glued on carbide bits! I had one come unglued from the heat and did some damage! (luckily I wasn't in the path)

      Id stick with whiteside or Amana both are brazed on not glue. You must have had a cheap Chinese made router bit and they are worthless on wood too.

    With cooling and slow enough feed speed you can mill pretty much most things with one of these. I do.

  • @bobbg9041
    @bobbg9041 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What was the RPMs on your mill and feed rate also depth of cut. Not a bad finnish for a 2 flu cutter ment to shape wood. But the question is becuse I dont own a bridgport or any mill and a drill press wont hold a tool like this without falling out of the chuck with lateral cutting pressures. It might work on soft woods and some American hardwoods but its not going to work on exotic hardwoods that good they are just too hard.
    Oh id so love to have a mill and metal lathe. That with my woodworking tools would compleat my shop tools mostly.
    Maybe a drum sander.
    I wonder can you do this with a router table?

    I USE THAT SAME ROUTER BIT ON A TABLE SET UP FOR CUTTING OFF EXCESS ALUMINUM WELDS ON OUTSIDE CORNERS

    Hey make a fixture for your quick change tool post to hold this bit and see how it works in the lathe for making ball ends or semi spherical cuts you get the idea, I bet it would work well for an easy to make shape cutting tool. And a great Idea for another video for ya.

    Also wondering on the speed/rpm used. I have a router I use for my woodworking and want to try this with the router bits I have lying around.

    Pull out some 4140 and give it a try, lol
    Ah I just love the smell of burning oil in the morning.
    As my cousin always said go faster
    (we need more scrap.) I was thinking under my breath.

    hey there, tom over at ox tools has used a carbide to roundover but on mild steel for his etching press project, it sure took a heap of abuse and saved a load of grinding!

      @@jerrywhidby. Absolutely. You can cut the heck out of aluminum with a hand router. There is a whole industry based on it. Google AR-15 router jig.

    Sounded like a bit of chatter, but a much better result than I expected. I sure wouldn't try that with a router though.

    • @PracticalRenaissance
      @PracticalRenaissance  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MarginWalker a bit of vibration but if it was chatter it certainly wasn't bad in my opinion. A router itself would be a whole different beast on aluminum! Thanks for watching!

      works fine with a router as well....just need a good flat surface for the router to ride on and you have to make damn sure you never climb cut....also keep the wd-40 handy....its usually banished from most shops but while routing on aluminum its definitely worth spraying the evil stuff

    • @Tricyklist
      @Tricyklist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low odour lamp oil [US: kerosene: UK:paraffin] works very well when machining aluminium.
      Night and day difference when turning. Probably just as good when milling.
      I also use it when miter sawing aluminium. Just dab it on with a small brush.
      I am very allergic to WD40. It causes severe asthma symptoms.
      I have never had asthma symptoms until I tried WD40.
      Avoid at the slightest sign of breathing difficulties!

    • @mountainmanfab
      @mountainmanfab 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah its fairly vile stuff lol....works wonders for some things but its nearly impossible to remove and even a chance of overspray needs to be kept far away from any surface that eventually needs painting...plain old ivory bar soap works fairly well on aluminum too...especially to keep files,burrs,sanding and grinding discs from loading up
