  • The time has come to start weaning early spring 2020 calves. The calves are all big enough to not need mama any longer and the cows need to dry up and gain some weight before calving again.

Lol, I enjoyed that a great deal, thanks Jason. That little snot 27 could put a hurtin on a feller. You got that all worked out rather nicely I'd say, nice job! That's a nice job of low stress handling. The polywire trick is slick, I've used that one myself. The other trick I use, really a cheat...is sweet feed. I never have to drive anyone anywhere, as long as I have a plastic bag to rattle I can get my sheep or cattle to come to me and follow me like the pied piper, lol. The only issue there is a few of them will damnear run a guy clean over if I'm not really careful. I had half of mine get out the other day while I was moving poly and it was folded around. They ran a good couple hundred yards across the hill on the fresh green grass before I noticed they were going. I reached in the ranger and grabbed an empty sack and hollered "here girls!" and rattled the empty bag...had them back in lickety split.

i use trained border collies for the gathering and sorting without stressing the cows . one good dog can do the job of three shepherds.and all for some kibble .

I'd be interested in your reasoning in moving the cows to a large area rather than setting up a lane for them to go right to the corral? With your time working them from a large area it seems like it would have been a better bet to take the time to set up a lane with step ins.
